A Special Message from President Scott A. Vowels
Are Expos Worth the Effort?

Scott (small version)

As we come up on our 34th annual procurement fair and matchmaker, I have to ponder the question, "Are events like this really worth the effort?" In my humble opinion the only value anyone receives from attending this or any event is in the networking opportunities that are provided. So the real question might be does networking really work... I will have to say YESSSSS. ARE YOU KIDDING ME???  Of course networking works and will help grow your business. If you already know this then stop reading this article and get ready to make this year's expo (aptly named "Business Without Boundaries") the most productive event you have ever attended. If you are not convinced of the value of networking and essentially the NCMSDC, then allow me five minutes of your time and give me the opportunity to point out how wrong you are by reading the rest of the article...

Last week, I attended the NMSDC's April Quarterly Meeting in Washington, DC, hosted by the MD/DC Minority Supplier Development Council, otherwise known as The Capitol Council.  For 3 days, we focused on Good Governance within the Councils, talked about the economic recovery and the due diligence from The White House.  We had a briefing from several agencies of the Federal Government, where we talked about MBE Programs and how we access & utilize those programs for our benefit...<Read More>

EXPO TIPS

Read & Succeed

The Council has informed all participating corporations that our MBEs have been instructed in the following areas in preparation for the Expo:

DO NOT be overly friendly with corporate representatives

(no matter how many times you have met them).  Be professional, courteous, and respect their personal space.  Do not hug them.  Be mindful of your language and how you present yourself.

DO NOT dress informally.

Click here for examples of appropriate Expo attire.  Appropriate professional attire should be worn on all business occasions and to all business events.

Present your value add, goods/services, and elevator pitch

to all corporate representatives as if it's your first time meeting them (even if it isn't).

Register in all target corporate Supplier Diversity websites prior to the Expo.

Prepare for your matchmaking appts and/or in-booth appts.

Ensure that you have all necessary presentation material, brochures, etc. and have practiced in advance.

Research your target Corporate Members.

Prepare for your meetings with Corporate Members by reviewing their website, annual report, etc. Learn their "pain points" and see how they might best benefit from your services.

Be prepared to articulate your company's core capacities in 1 minute.  Click here to learn how.

Visit our Videos & Presentations webpage for video clips on how to prepare for Expos and trade shows.
