Presented the 2011 Catholic Charities USA Family Strengthening Award

for its outstanding work to reduce poverty and strengthen families

Catholic Charities Community Services received the 2011 Catholic Charities USA Family Strengthening Award for its outstanding work to reduce poverty and strengthen families through its Paths of HOPE program.

Paths of HOPE helps vulnerable individuals and families to permanently improve their financial situations and achieve long-term prosperity through a continuum of services including financial education, self-development, skill building, planning and mentorship.

"By helping families build the skills and access the resources they need to be economically stable, Paths of HOPE helps them to build better lives and, as a result, strengthens the communities in which they live,"  said Jane Stenson, senior director of poverty reduction strategies for Catholic Charities USA. "We need more programs like Paths of HOPE to reach our goal to reduce poverty in America by 50 percent by 2020."

The award included a $25,000 gift made possible through the generous support of the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

"Paths of HOPE is made possible by our program staff and hundreds of volunteers who are dedicated to permanently improving lives by providing sustainable solutions. This award is a testament to their efforts and will allow us to help more vulnerable individuals and families," said Bob Brown, president and CEO of Catholic Charities Community Services. "We are grateful to the Annie E. Casey Foundation and to Catholic Charities USA for their recognition and support."

Catholic Charities Paths of HOPE classes and workshops are free and continuously forming in communities throughout Central and Northern Arizona. To find out more, visit

MSP Christmas Crew in Memory of Angelita Morales

One family's heartfelt Christmas gift

The spirit of Christmas is being shared with the residents of My Sisters' Place thanks to the generosity of family and friends of Angelita "Lita" Montano. Dec. 6 marks the second anniversary of  the 26-year-old's death due to domestic violence. Her family has taken tragedy and turned it into service, honoring Lita's memory by helping other women in abusive situations.

"This family is amazing. Their ability to turn something so tragic into something positive is truly inspirational," says Peggy Dudinyak, shelter coordinator. "You should see the smiles on the faces of our women and children when the family brings Christmas to our shelter."

In addition to providing Christmas dinner, Lita's family are providing clothing and gifts from the women's and children's wish lists and each woman will receive a special gift basket.

"The family also shares Lita's story with the residents," adds Dudinyak. "It is a very powerful message about safety that the women in our shelter need to hear."

"We want women to know there is help out there," says Joanie Sandavol, Lita's mother, "and not to be embarrassed to ask for it."

Family and friends are flying in from out of state to assist with this Christmas effort.

You can help too by donating:

  • Phone cards, pre-paid cellphones, bus passes, movie tickets
  • New bedding - crib, teen and full-size sheets, mattress pads and blankets
  • Gifts cards: Wal-Mart, Fry's, Sam's Club, Walgreens, CVS, Costco, etc.

Click here to see our complete wish list.

Donations are being accepted  8 am to 5 pm, Mon.-Fri. at Engeunity Systems, 2165 W. Pecos, Ste 1, in Chandler.

In the Spotlight: North Star Youth Katie Boggs recognized for service

North Star Youth Partnership participant receives Young Philanthropist Award from the Yavapai County Community Foundation for her Teens Taking Action service project to bring awareness to plight of the victims of trafficked

Katie BoggsKatie Boggs, freshman at Grand Canyon University, received the 2011 Youth Philanthropist Award from the Yavapai County Community Foundation for her work to bring awareness to the plight of victims of trafficking.

Boggs completed her project, STAR (Sex Trafficking Awareness and Relief), as part of North Star's Teens Talking Action program.

When Boggs learned about trafficking, she knew she had to raise awareness about the issue--the average age of entry is 13.

As part of her STAR awareness campaign, Boggs hosted a community event in Prescott's Courthouse Square which included a dance by local teens and a presentation on the issue.

Boggs also created STAR lanyards and T-shirts which were sold at the event to benefit Catholic Charities' DIGNITY program to assist victims of trafficking.

"I just couldn't believe how young girls were and how they were lured in," said Boggs on why she chose the project. "No one should be violated in such a harsh, life-altering manner."

Boggs has always had a heart for helping others. In addition to Teens Taking Action, she also participated in North Star's Peer Assisted Leadership program, student government, Key Club, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She has also volunteered for a variety of community events.
