We recently met with a group of people and were discussing a book we all read, Secrets of the Millionaire Mind, by T. Harv Eker (see Angie's Book Picks below).
We laughed about how we were resistant to reading it because the title really didn't seem to fit our values - like having a "millionaire mind" was the most important thing to acquire! But, we all agreed we were sooo glad we read it - we had misjudged the title!
I love this book because the author does such a great job discussing true principles! One of my favorites is, "When you are complaining, you become a living, breathing crap-magnet." Haha...but, it's true!
Have you ever noticed when you are in a disconcerting mood and begin to complain about this "thing" or that "thing," more "things" appear out of the blue to complain about? I have! It never fails...when I am grumbling about something, that's when I get a paper cut or stub my toe, drop the mustard jar on the kitchen floor or hit every red-light when trying not to be late for something! Haha...it's funny but not funny at the time! That's how it works, though. When I catch myself and stop the grumbling, re-focus my attitude and look at the bright side of the situation, then I find I avoid more irritants to my life and, in fact, everything runs much more smoothly even if I am in "rush mode."
Have you noticed there are some people that ALWAYS seem to have "crap" surrounding them? Folks who always have something to complain about, to grumble about, to worry about, to sulk about, to be frustrated about - seems as if they can't get through a day without something that "gets their goat?" Those are the people I want to stay away from because when I'm too close for too long then "crap" gets on me too!
Checking ourselves regularly to be sure we are not attracting this type of stuff into our lives will ensure we are becoming a living, breathing, blessing magnet instead! =) |

In 2005, 133 million Americans (almost 1 out of every 2 adults) had at least one chronic illness.
70 percent of all deaths are contributed to chronic illness.
That means almost 1,900,000 Americans died in 2005 from chronic illness (cancer, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, and other autoimmune disorders).
That is over 5200 Americans every day.
That is like 12 jumbo jets carrying 433 passengers each crashing every single day in America.
Only 5 percent of these issues are genetically based. The other 95 percent are preventable.
Making changes in diet, plant-based supplementation, exercise, and stress management can do wonders for reducing these statistics.
We are not victims of our genes. We can change our lifestyles and become healthy!

Greetings!
We want to thank YOU wonderful people who have hosted us in your cities! We are so enjoying meeting with you, teaching our class, and visiting with you in your homes too. We especially enjoyed being in North Carolina as we have four grandchildren there! Our daughter and son-in-law spoiled us as we spent a few days with them soaking up the JOY of their little ones. I can hardly believe how quickly the time has gone from when I was the mom surrounded by my children. I look at what parents do and wonder how they do it! But, I am grateful THEY ARE doing it and I feel so blessed to leave my little grandchildren in such good hands...it's been fun...although I left with a tear in my eye - I'll miss them.
However, I am looking forward to being where the rest of my family and grandchildren are in three other states soon, and in the meantime we thank you for making us feel a part of your family! We're in Ohio now and will soon be in Canada...check the schedule frequently as it is always fluid!

Black Bean Burgers Anyone?
Black beans are a great source of nutrition. I had a Black Bean Burger the other day that was sooo delicious! It was the first one where I actually thought - "Wow, I've got to make this a part of my regular diet!" I got the recipe because truly it was that good...I ate it on a sprouted-grain hamburger bun with Dijon mustard, tomatoes, mixed greens, Vidalia onions and pickles! YUM! Larry ate the same but he put two black bean patties on his!
Be sure to check out the recipe in this issue so you can try it too. I love all beans, but I especially love black beans. They are not only full of protein and fiber, as all beans are, but they are particularly interesting in contrast to other beans because of their purple-blackish color coat. There are at least 8 different flavonoids in this bean skin. Flavonoids are color-producing phytonutrient pigments that have great anti-oxidant properties...they work together with vitamins to help the body avoid oxygen-related damage. They also have about 3 times as much omega-3 fatty acids as other beans which is important also. If you'd like to try eating more black beans you can put them in place of whatever beans are called for in a recipe with little or no problem. |

Processed Food
by Larin Cummings
The first image that comes to mind for most people when they hear the term 'processed food' is a wrapped burger and a sleeve of french fries served over a counter at a fast food joint. But the truth is the very food you have in your kitchen cabinets is processed.
What exactly is processed food? If it is boxed, bagged, canned or jarred and has a list of ingredients on the label, it's processed. Methods to process food include canning, freezing, refrigeration, dehydration, and aseptic processing. Processed foods have been altered from their natural state for "safety" and convenience reasons. About 90 percent of the money Americans spend on food is used to buy processed food.
Crimes of Convenience Processed foods are more convenient. Unfortunately, convenience isn't the only thing you get when you eat processed food. The following is a list of ingredients manufacturers add to food to make it "convenient:"
- Color - it gives orange soda that neon glow
- Stabilizers - so the gravy isn't watery
- Emulsifiers - who says oil and water can't mix?
- Bleach - disinfects and deodorizes
- Texturizers - nothings worse than soggy cereal
- Softeners - it's as if the ice cream was churned twice
- Preservatives - so you can eat the cupcake 6 months from now
- Sweeteners - saccharin and aspartame are sweeter than sugar
- Odor Hiders - hide that fish paste smell on your instant Pad Thai
- Flavors - have the taste of watermelon all year long
The problem is most processed foods have a laundry list of ingredients similar to a can of paint! Take a look at the list of ingredients from the strawberry flavoring of a milkshake served at drive-through restaurant: amyl acetate, amyl butyrate, amyl valerate, anethol, anisyl formate, benzyl acetate, benzyl isobutyrate, butyric acid, cinnamyl isobutyrate, cinnamylvalerate, cognac essential oil, diacetyl, dipropyl ketone, ethyl butyrate, ethyl cinnamate, ethyl heptanoate, ethyl lactate, ethyl methylpenylglycidate, ethyl nitrate, ethyl propionate, ethyl valerbate, heliotropin, hydroxphrenyl-2butanone, a-ionone, isobutyl anthranilate, isobutyl butrate, lemon essential oil, maltol, 4-methylacetophenone, methyl anthranilate, methylbenzoate, methyl cinnamate, methyl heptine carbone, methyl naphthyl ketone, methyl slicylate, mint essential oil, neroli essential oil, nerolin, neryl isobulyrate, orris butter, phenethyl alcohol, sore rum ether, g-undecalctone, vanillin, and solvent.
Looks delicious doesn't it? And this is just a small sample of the 6,000 chemicals used to process food! The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn't require food manufacturers to list additives as ingredients that they consider "Generally Regarded As Safe (GRAS)." All the label has to say is "artificial flavor" or "artificial coloring." Both of these are considered "natural." Petroleum, coal tar, and limestone are found in nature and can be called "natural" but that doesn't mean it is natural for your body to digest it as food! Studies Show...
A 7-year study conducted by the University of Hawaii on 200,000 people found a 67 percent increased risk of pancreatic cancer in those who ate processed meat (hot dogs, bologna, Vienna sausages, spam, etc.). A recent study conducted by Harvard found that women who avoided high-carb processed foods cut their heart disease risk by 30 percent. Boot the "Nutrition Boosts" Most processed food has little nutrition but high levels of sugar, fat, and salt. Manufacturers add synthetic vitamins and inorganic minerals to enhance their "nutritional" content. Unfortunately, people who supplement with synthetic vitamins (not plant based vitamins found in raw vegetables and fruit) increase their morbidity rate at a statistically significant level when compared with people who do not supplement with synthetic vitamins. But plant-based vitamins are difficult to find as 95 percent of all vitamin and mineral supplements sold in America contain synthetic vitamins. If your vitamin is plant-based it will have the plant source listed in parentheses after the vitamin. For example, "Vitamin C (from acerola cherries)." If it just says "Vitamin C" or if it says "Ascorbic Acid," then it is synthetic. One Safe Path to Wellness
Staying away from processed foods and eating whole foods as close to their original state is the only safe way to wellness. You need to supplement because even our non-processed food has lost much of its nutritional value over the last 50 years. But always supplement with plant-based vitamins, minerals, and glyconutrients. They do not cause harm within the body. They will support normal human physiology and allow your immune system to do the things it was designed to do.

 Grandparent Heaven
We were in heaven one day not long ago when we got to enjoy three separate "dates" with three of our grandchildren. Since we were visiting in North Carolina we planned a special day where we could spend one-on-one time with each one of our older grandchildren. (The baby was still a bit too young but we did get lots of cuddle and reading time together anyway!) We loved talking and planning with them so we could come up with the perfect "date."
Miniature golf with our eight year old grandson, painting ponies with our seven year old grand-daughter and visiting the pet store with our five year old grand-daughter was sheer delight for them and for us! We had fun talking and laughing and just hanging out together...of course, we also enjoyed a yummy ice cream cone too. These are the memories we want to have with our grandchildren as we know the time we spend together is what will be remembered even if the "thing" we did fades away. Relationships are built with time not things, so spending time together is vitally important if the people you love are important to you. |
