Sea Shop Scare(crow) Soiree!
Everyone is abuzz about the Madison Chamber of Commerce's Scarecrow Contest, including Wall Street and lower Durham Road. Over 65 scarecrows "invaded" the town recently, with businesses, families and organizations constructing and adorning the characters and displaying them throughout the downtown sidewalks and other areas. The public is invited to view the displays and cast ballots for your favorites. The celebration will culminate with a "Sea, Shop' Scare(crow) Soiree" on Thursday, October 28, from 5 to 8pm in downtown Madison. Wear a costume if you'd like, bring friends and family and enjoy free refreshments (including treats for children) & spooky specials in participating stores. All proceeds of the scarecrow displays have benefited the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation. This go to zip06. |

1/4 C. Granulated Sugar
2 tsp. Baking Powder
1/4 tsp. Sea Salt
6 Tbsp. Cold Unsalted Butter
1/3 C. Almond Paste
1/2 C. Milk
1/4 tsp. Almond Extract
1 Large Egg, beaten
Milk, Sliced Almonds, and Turbinado (raw, coarse) sugar
Preheat you oven to 400degrees Fahrenheit. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
Whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Cut the butter into the flour mixture with a pastry blender until the mixture resembles small pea-sized pieces. Cut in the almond paste.
In a small bowl whisk together the milk, almond extract and egg. Add this to the flour mixture and stir with a fork just until all the dry ingredients are moistened.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead 10-12 times. Divide the dough into two pieces and pat each piece into a 6" round circle. Cut each circle into 6-8 wedges. Transfer the wedges to the prepared cookie sheet. Brush with milk and top with sliced almonds and Turbinado sugar.
Bake in the preheated oven for 13-15 minutes, until lightly browned.
Serve with clotted cream and jam. [To make homemade clotted cream, whisk together 4 oz of cream cheese with 1/2 cup of heavy cream until creamy consistency is reached.
