From Our Kitchen:

HOLIDAY FRENCH TOAST
[Our friend, Pete, shared this recipe as his gift when I bought the Inn.  He came and made it for breakfast as our first "guest chef."  It comes from his godmother, Ruth Koenig]

1 C. Brown Sugar
1/2 C. Butter, melted
3 tsp. Ground Cinnamon (divided)
3 tart and firm apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced (We use Royal Gala)
1/2 C. dried cranberries (original Craisins)
1 1/2 Long French Baguettes (or 3 short French Bread Loaves) - Cut into 54 1/2"thick Slices
6 large Eggs
1 1/2 C. Milk
1 Tbsp. Vanilla

Spray a 9"x13" Glass Baking Dish with Pam, butter flavor.  Combine Sugar, butter and 3 tsp. cinnamon in the pan.  Add Craisins and apple slices, tossing to coat well and distribute evenly.

In a Blender, mix Eggs, Milk, remaining 1 1/2 tsp Cinnamon and Vanilla until well blended.  Dip each bread slice into the egg mixture, coating both sides, and arrange in TWO Layers of 3 long rows of 9 slightly overlapping slices each in the pan.  Pour extra egg mixture overall. Cover and refrigerate 4 hours or overnight.

Bake covered with foil in a preheated 375 Fahrenheit oven for 40 minutes.  Uncover and bake 5-10 minutes more.  Remove from oven and let stand 5-10 minutes.
(Note:  Refrigerated version may need extra baking time unless first brought to room temperature.  Also, baking times may vary from one appliance to another.)

One serving is three overlapping slices from each row.  Serve Upside Down, while it's still warm.  Spoon extra sauce over and around. Garnish with a few more Craisins.

What Our Guests Have to Say:
"I wanted to take a moment to thank you for your wonderful facility and hospitality this past weekend.  My wife and I really enjoyed ourselves and the relaxing atmosphere you provide.  The room was great, jacuzzi was where we could forget about everything, and the whole package was just what we'd hoped for from a B&B.  Having never done it before, we didn't know what to expect, and now I believe we've been spoiled."
"Thanks again for being a special hostess and allowing us a wonderful anniversary weekend."

Glad Tidings
December 2008, Vol.1, No.1
Welcome to Glad Tidings, our first newsletter.  We have been encouraged to write one for a very long time.  Beginning with this first issue we hope you'll welcome us into your day every once in awhile and enjoy reading about what is going on here at the Tidewater Inn, and out and about in Madison and our neighboring CT shoreline communities.
A Home Town Christmas
Have you ever seen the movie, Christmas in Connecticut?  The leading lady invites a soldier to a friend's farm in Connecticut to experience a "Real Home Town Christmas."  We're not on a farm, but here in Madison anyone can come to visit to experience such a time as this.  To help you to imagine just what that might be, we planned a Christmas in Connecticut Escape for this first weekend in December.  It's a weekend of tree lightings and caroling and holiday concerts and boutiques, just to mention a few of the moments you might enjoy here. Can't make it this weekend?  There's plenty of home-town charm to experience at any other time.  We look forward to welcoming you.

For your planning info:  Tree lightings and caroling are scheduled for Friday, December 5th for Guilford, Saturday, December 6th for Clinton and Sunday, December 7th for Madison.
Specialty Shops and Small Town Ambience - Gift Shopping, Madison Style
Madison shops are all dressed up for the holidays.  If you're looking for that unique gift we believe you'll find it here in one of our many specialty shops. Many stores offer in store "secret sales" as well as wish list gift registries, and small town ambience is everywhere.  Madison shops on the Boston Post Road and on Wall Street are open every Thursday evening through Christmas, including "Late Night Shopping," a Madison tradition, on December 4th.  Strolling carolers will entertain shoppers Thursday evenings as well as Saturday and Sunday afternoons in December.
Shopping "Inn Syle"
Escape to the Tidewater Inn for a Shopping Holiday! Wake up to a bountiful breakfast and set out, fortified, for your shopping adventures. Return to relax and restore with afternoon and early evening fireside refreshments. Bargains abound in two nearby outlet malls, Clinton Crossing and Tanger Outlets.  For the antique lover and collector you'll surely find the perfect gift. Explore multi dealer shops, such as Clinton Antique Center, consignment shops, such as Madison's On Consignment, and single-dealer shops, such as Madison's Lawton Fine Art and Antiques. For unique and fascinating art finds the Guilford Arts Center is the place to go. Have a wine enthusiast to buy for? Then stop in at the Madison Wine Shop for a chat with Rick

The Shoreline Dining Scene
It's a tough job, but somebody has to do it ... In recent weeks I took one for the team and made my obligatory visit to two of the area's newest eating establishments: the Harbour Seal Family Grille in Westbrook and Savvy Tea Gourmet here in Madison.  Both are delightful "finds."

Harbour Seal is brought to us by the folks from the Black Seal in Essex and Gabrielle's in Centerbrook.  That's quite a heritage.  I often enjoy a late Sunday lunch with friends at the Black Seal, and I've heard from many that Gabrielle's is a "don't miss."  John, the Manager at Harbour Seal, proudly told me how they make their Lobster Bisque from scratch.  Their menu features "Comfort Food" - Yum!  Savvy Tea Gourmet, its name says it all, offers 250 - yes, really - different teas from around the world in a relaxed setting that reminds me of Starbucks - another favorite.  I have mourned the closing of the Harp and Hearth last August and now look forward to including Savvy Tea Gourmet as part of our Tea Lover's Escape.  Come try these both for yourselves and make your own new discoveries.
We're a Part of 2.3 Miles of Scenic Roadway!
A 2.3 mile segment of the Boston Post Road in Madison that includes our Tidewater Inn has been officially recognized as a Scenic Roadway by the State of Connecticut.  The segment begins at the intersection with Neck Road and continues East to the intersection with Lover's Lane.  The Scenic Road designation means that any further alteration or improvement on that section of roadway will maintain the character of the road.  For example, this will help to maintain the median divider on the Boston Post Road in Madison's downtown, a charming part of Madison's local character.
Celebration, Champagne and  Chocolate!
Thinking about New Year's Eve?  Make it a long weekend this year and come to the CT shoreline for a getaway celebration.  Many of the wonderful restaurants near us are taking reservations now for an evening of fine dining and entertainment. Give us a call or check the availability of your favorite room online.

     It's Chocolate to the Rescue!
The ultimate experience for the true chocolate lover - a very special weekend Escape - January 24th and 25th or 25th and 26th - highlighted by the American Red Cross "Chocolate to the Rescue" event on Sunday, January 25th - an afternoon by the sea with all the chocolate confections that you want, and champagne, and more chocolate ... Be sure to call us quickly to reserve your favorite room.
I and the staff really enjoy bringing you all the latest at the Tidewater Inn and in and about Madison.   We hope we get to see you again at our front door very soon.  As always, we hope for you the very best of blessings and serendipities and sincerely thank you for your referrals, support and patronage.

Our Heralding Angel lights the way on our front Lawn, our "Bucket Tree" is decorated in the center of  Madison, our Christmas Tree adorns the sitting room and the Inn is all decked out for Christmas. We are waiting to welcome you!
