Sporting a Better Brand
On the subject of baseball, The New York Knickerbockers in 1849 was the first baseball team to wear uniforms. They wore pants made of blue wool, white flannel shirts and straw hats. By 1900, all the Major League Baseball teams had adopted them and the uniforms themselves had different colors and patterns that reflected the different baseball positions on the team. By the 1930s, nearly every team had distinctive logos, letters or the team name on their shirts, as part of the team's marketing. Through the years licensing team logos became popular and team merchandise has become a huge moneymaker for the teams. Jerseys, caps, bats, balls, stuffed animals, trinkets, you name it. In 2010 Major League Baseball merchandise sales were up 6%, even in this tepid economy, and this season licensed apparel is expected to pass the $3 billion mark! Not surprisingly, last year the New York Yankees and Red Sox made up 53 percent of total licensed merchandise sales. In fact the Yankees and Red Sox are by far the top two highest selling teams of all time, followed by the LA Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago Cubs. Nexus has worked with many companies in developing company promotions as well as promotional apparel items. We've taken logos and company marks and have designed distinctive promotional items and apparel for company giveaways, tradeshows and corporate use. Contact me if you have anything coming up.
