Our very own Craig Calsbeek, president of Nexus, has been selected as the 2009 California Avocado Festival poster designer.
The 23rd festival runs October 2 - 4 in Carpinteria, California, an annual tradition which began in 1986. His artwork will be replicated on posters, T-shirts, advertising and other promotional materials.
Taking a modern twist on the produce crate labels of the past, the final design was selected for its nostalgic feel and its emphasis on the avocado industry's importance in California, especially the Santa Barbara area.
Calsbeek states, "I have always been attracted to California's vintage produce crate art and I wanted this year's poster to be a salute to this art form. By using distinctive typefaces, warm, contrasting colors combined with hand-tinted grove scenes from the era, I hoped to project the flavor of this true California tradition." |
Coupons are big business
People are clipping, downloading and redeeming coupons more than ever in this economy. And it's not just for a box of cereal or a free hamburger at McDonalds. You can find coupons for virtually any product or service you're looking for -- appliances at big box stores, your favorite restaurant or spa, kitchen remodels, you name it.
Manufacturer coupon use has increased 17% this year and 90% of all coupons are found in free-standing inserts in the Sunday newspaper. Use of online coupons has skyrocketed and in 2009 coupon web sites have been the second-most-visited category on the internet. Coupons.com experienced a huge 192% increase in the value of coupons printed from its site in June compared with a year ago.
So far the redemption rate for online coupons is higher than for traditional coupons, since consumers are pickier about which coupons they download and print out. Food, grocery and cleaning products are the top downloads.
Consumers are looking for savings and value and saving a few bucks in this economy makes sense. In fact some things in life are even free. See our coupon to the right.
