May 2011 | THE DESIGN DIVA DISHES DESIGN TRENDS AND LIFESTYLE TIPS |
|
Greetings!
Welcome to May, the month for honoring Mothers. My two daughters are the loves of my life and my reason for living. While raising them as a single parent was not easy, it was the most rewarding challenge I will ever face in my lifetime. Treasure each day with your child as a gift. Before you know it they are grown and gone! I hope you all take the opportunity to celebrate motherhood or honor your own mother this Mother's Day. Since most moms feel like they spend half their life in the kitchen I always focus on kitchens in May. Whether you are doing a complete remodel or just updating one area, I've got some ideas to share. You'll also learn of some trends in kitchen design, the Color of the Month is blue, and The Green Report has some green living suggestions. The Recipe of the Month is for the 21 and over set: Margarita Fruit Salad. As always, I request you submit questions for my design blog " Ask the Design Diva." Also send me pictures of expensive items and I will find more affordable versions on my blog " Save or Splurge." Beginning May 31st I will be tying that blog to the Million Dollar Decorator show on BravoTV. Thank you for being my faithful readers, and please share this with others using the link at the bottom of the E-zine. Have a wonderful month! Barbara Green

| Kitchens are often referred to as the "Heart of the Home" but I consider it the "Workhorse of the Home." It is used for activities as varied as cooking, eating, homework, paying bills, entertaining, watching TV, along with a host of other possibilities depending on whose family inhabits it. Whether you are planning on doing a complete remodel, or simply looking for ways to improve what you've already got, here are five areas to consider:
Flooring Today's popular open floorplans feature hardwood floors throughout the main level. While it is a beautiful look, there are dangers associated with wood floors in the kitchen, such as pets, children and water leaks. If you love the look of wood but want something more durable and impervious to water, porcelain tiles are now available that fool even the most discerning eyes. Below is one of many examples I found at Carolina Tile & Stone .

Other options for durable kitchen flooring are slate, laminate, and vinyl. Vinyl floors have come a long way from the sheet products I remember from my childhood. They are the most affordable, and can mimic tile, wood, and stone. Cabinets Mismatched cabinets are still very popular. If you are replacing yours, consider doing one type on the wall and another type for the island. If you are keeping your current cabinets, you can update them by painting the island a different color.
Counters and Backsplashes If you are trying to transform the look of your kitchen without a complete remodel, replacing the countertop is a great option. The movement now is toward natural materials such as granite, quartz, and marble. Other options are stainless steel (what I used in my own kitchen), glass, and concrete. Don't forget to pay attention to the backslpash. For cost savings, use a basic tile for most of the backsplash, with custom tiles used decoratively above the cooktop and as accents throughout.
Lighting Every kitchen needs three types of lighting: task, ambient, and accent. Task lighting can be recessed lights or pendants directly over work areas like the stove and sink. Ambient is overall lighting for the room, which can be an overhead fixture or recessed lights spaced evenly around the perimeter. Accent lighting can be rope lighting tucked behind crown molding or the toe-kick, puck lights affixed to the bottom of wall cabinets, or lights inside of glass-front cabinets. This small kitchen is a great example of all three types of light being used for function and style.
Window Treatments Some people prefer to keep their kitchen windows bare, but I advise against it. There are so many hard surfaces in a kitchen, you really need something to soften the room and absorb some of the sound. It is also a great way to add a touch of color and warmth to the room. A roman shade can offer softness and privacy, while a valance can be used when privacy is not an issue.

 | Trend Report

| by Article Author | | Kitchens are very expensive rooms to design, so you want the function and overall style of the room to withstand the test of time. Bright colors are a huge trend right now, but there is a right way and a wrong way to incorporate them into a kitchen. Don't use a bright color on expensive items like cabinetry unless you are absolutely sure you love it and will not tire of it. Otherwise, save the bright colors for the wall color or accessories, which will be easier and more affordable to change. Open shelving is a trend which I feel will remain a popular addition to kitchens. I would advise against it for people who don't cook alot, as the items on the shelves would just be dust collectors. But if you are using your plates, pots, and pans regularly you won't have to worry about that.

The final trend is one that actually comes from historical kitchens. Wall to wall cabinets are a pretty recent development in kitchen design. Previously, kitchens were comprised of separate pieces of furniture, each suited for their own particular task. While these cabinets below are all built in, they look like individual pieces of furniture. They also share similar design details of custom furniture.

 | Color of the Month
|

The Color of the Month is blue, which is one of the most popular colors in the rainbow. There are so many different shades of blue, there is sure to be a good shade for anyone. Blue can be either cool or warm, depending on the shade you select. Cool blues (sky, baby, or ice blue) give rooms a calming feel, which makes them perfect for bedrooms,
Warm blues (navy, ocean, or slate blue) make a room feel cozy, making them perfect for gathering places such as living or dining rooms.

Even though these two rooms feature white sofas, coffee tables, and accessories, they each feel completely different because of the shade of blue on the walls.
While blue and white is a tried and true color combination, blue looks great when combined with other colors, too. Blue, yellow, and red work well together because they are all primary colors and are spaced equidistantly on the color wheel.
My final suggestion for blue is to use it where it appear naturally: above your head. The color of the sky looks great when painted on the ceiling, and gives the room an expansive feel. For those who believe in the paranormal, blue ceilings are also supposed to ward off ghosts and evil spirits. It is also supposed to be a deterrent for spiders spinning their webs!

 | Green Report

| by Article Author | | A green kitchen is so much more than a paint color. Kitchens today can be green from the materials used to build it to the products used to clean it. Here are some places to start:
While granite counters are popular, they create a large carbon footprint from the mining, honing, and transporting of the slabs. My favorite eco-friendly counter is made from recycled glass. The samples below left, show specs of different bottles used in fabrication. Now you can get gorgeous solid recycled glass without specs that is sleek, elegant, and modern. It is perfect for kitchens in waterfront homes.
The second thing to think about is the products you bring in to your kitchen. Make sure your soaps and detergents are bio-degradable, you are filtering and bottling your own water instead of buying bottled water, and you use reusable shopping bags and storage containers.
Finally, try to develop a green way of thinking and look for every opportunity to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Reduce energy consumption by only running full dishwasher loads and use the air dry setting instead of heat setting. Reduce your reliance on paper towels by keeping cloth towels at hand. Recycle vegetable and fruit trimmings into a compost bin for fertilizing your home-grown vegetables.

One fact of life is that no matter what your current circumstance, there is always someone who is dealing with something worse. Whether the challenge is financial, physical, or emotional, it is important to help those less fortunate in whatever way we can. In that spirit, each month I share the needs of non-profit organizations in hopes it might stir up desire in someone to help out.
