February 2011 | THE DESIGN DIVA DISHES DESIGN TRENDS AND LIFESTYLE TIPS |
|
Greetings!
Happy February everyone! I don't know about you, but I would be happy to never see another snowflake again for the rest of my life! I didn't expect snowy weather when I relocated to North Carolina, nor did I plan on being stuck in New Jersey this past month because of snow storms either. I am so ready for spring! Let's all pray the groundhog won't see his shadow this year... Since February is known for Valentine's Day, my February issue always focuses on bedrooms. Don't expect romance tips; coming to me for romance advice would be like turning to Tiger Woods for marriage advice. However, I can tell you how to create luxurious and functional bedrooms. The Trend Report announces the return of an old favorite, the Color of the Month is White, and the Green Report provides green options for bedroom decor. The Recipe of the Month is Slow Cooker Jambalaya, great for dinner on Mardi Gras or any other day! February is also the anniversary month for me starting my own design business while living in Connecticut in 1992. Thank you to all of my clients who have made it possible for me to follow my passion and create beautiful residential and commercial interiors. Without you, I wouldn't still be here 19 years later. To show my appreciation, there is a special offer at the end of this E-zine. If you have been putting off fixing up your bedroom, this is the month to do it. I hope you have a Fabulous February filled with love and happiness. Please feel free to call me at 704.987.0277 or email me at sensiblychic4u@aol.com with any questions or comments. Barbara Green

| One of my clients is married to a man who travels extensively for work. He has been spoiled by the luxurious hotel rooms he stays in all over the world. While he loves his family, returning home to his ho-hum abode was less than thrilling. We embarked on a journey to create a master bedroom retreat that anyone would be happy to come home to. We focused on 5 aspects hotels get right.
Color Top hotels start with a neutral color background to appeal to a wide audience, then add an accent wall of bold color or wallpaper to set off the bed area. Good colors to choose from are beige, cream, gold, or green.

Bedding The most relaxing rooms will keep patterns to a minimum. Solid white or beige bedding is easy for hotels (and you) to maintain. Select a high thread count Egyptian cotton, and it will only get better with age. The bed scarf at the foot of the bed introduces a small amount of color and pattern that can be carried through in the window treatments, upholstered headboard, and pillows.
Furniture A seating area is another important element for a luxurious bedroom. If you don't have room for a seating area like this, at least include a comfortable reading chair in the corner or a bench at the foot of the bed.
Lighting The best lighting plans include light from three sources: ambient, task, and mood lighting. Ambient lighting can be from overhead lights or table lamps, task lights can be a reading light by your favorite chair, or desk lamp on your work surface. Mood lighting can be from wall sconces, uplights, or accent lighting fixtures. My favorite bedside lighting is either hung from the ceiling or the wall, keeping the nightstand surface clear for your books, alarm clock, and any other bedside necessities.
Breakfast Bar Once you create your luxurious bedroom you may never want to leave it. If you include a breakfast bar, you may never have to! With just a little planning and a small amount of wall and floor space, you can have a mini kitchen stocked with coffee and juice for the morning and champagne and strawberries for the evening.

One new trend for bedrooms is the return of wallpaper. Yes, wallpaper went away many years ago, but is back now and stronger than ever. It is a great option for those who have no architectural interest in their rooms and want to have more of a "Wow Factor." This elegant bedroom glows with a tone-on-tone metallic gold wallpaper covering all of the walls.

This bedroom features wallpaper only on the wall behind the bed. It serves as a strong focal point without the expense of papering all four walls.
If you are still afraid to commit to permanent installation of wallpaper, or are in a rental and are not allowed to wallpaper, use this trick: buy three large picture frames and instead of using a photo, insert pieces of wallpaper in the frame. You can use the same wallpaper in all three frames as shown, or select three coordinating wallpapers and hang them as a set. This can be used in any room where you have a large wall that needs artwork but you have a small budget.

This month's Color of the Month is white. Everyone who knows me knows I don't like white walls, but I love decorating with white. However, there are instances where white walls can work perfectly, as in the room below. With such a spectacular view, you don't want anything to compete, so a whitewash of the entire room was in order. To keep from looking boring or cold, textural interest was added through the bedding, the carpeting, the different stone textures, and the plants.

White is so perfect for rooms with a view that HGTV chose to paint the entire interior of their new "Dream Home" a Sherwin Williams white called "Incredible White." There is no competition for attention between the white walls and the incredible views outside all the windows.

The bedroom below is decorated with a generous use of white, combined with a light-as-air blue perfectly suited to its beachside locale. It also illustrates green decorating, for all of the furniture was handed down or purchased used. Notice the variety of styles and time periods the pieces are from, but they still have a cohesive look because they are all unified by the color white.

When selecting a white to go with fine antiques, you want it to have a slightly yellow undertone so it will have an aged patina correct for the time period.

For a modern, urban condo or loft, you want a crisp white with a light blue undertone.
For a romantic white to go with "Shabby Chic" or flea market treasures, select a white with a slight gray undertone.
White with a pale rose undertone is flattering to all skin types and looks great paired with more masculine shades of black, brown, or gray.

| by Article Author | | "Thinking Green" when decorating your bedroom does not mean you have to sacrifice any style, comfort, or beauty. Referencing back to my 5 aspects of hotel design, all five can be achieved with a "green" focus.
Color When painting your room, select paint that is low- or no-VOC to keep indoor air pollution to a minimum. If you want to include wallpaper in your design, select one of the wallpapers that have gone green, with low-VOCs, improved R-factors which reduce energy costs, and anti-microbial options to protect your family from mold, mildew, germs, bacteria, and micro-organisms. Bedding I was pleased and surprised by the amazing bedding available now made from bamboo. I purchased some for myself and it is the softest, silkiest bedding I have ever owned. The benefit of bamboo fabric is it feels like a luxurious fabric but is made from a quickly regenerating plant. Bamboo sheets also prevent bedbug infestation!
Furniture You can go green with your furniture in several ways. The first is buying the best quality you can afford, so it spends many years in your home, not in the landfill. You can also look for furniture made by companies that are committed to reforestation and eco-friendly construction methods., Finally, you can purchase quality, second hand furniture from consignment stores, eBay, or Craigslist.

Lighting Green lighting can be achieved by keeping your current lighting fixtures, but switching to compact florescent light bulbs or by switching your entire fixture out to a more energy efficient one using LED technology. LED lighting uses 80% less energy than a standard light bulb and lasts several years without changing a bulb.

Breakfast Bar Since you need only a small amount of cabinetry for a breakfast bar, I suggest visiting your local Habitat for Humanity ReStore and select from what they have. You can also check on eBay and Craigslist for cabinets removed during kitchen remodels. Second-hand refrigerators are always available, but particularly in the spring when college lets out and the students no longer need theirs.

Nothing beats a warm, home-cooked meal on a cold winter's night. However, most of us are pretty tired by the end of the day and standing in front of the stove cooking dinner isn't high on our list of things we feel like doing. Coming to save the day (and the dinner) is our trusty old friend, the crockpot. All you have to do is set aside five minutes in the morning to throw the ingredients in, and eight hours later you have a delicious and nutritious feast for you and your family. I chose this recipe because it is also great for entertaining on the weekends (perhaps a Mardi Gras celebration?) Now you can pay attention to your guests and not be stuck cooking in the kitchen.
Slow Cooker Jambalaya serves 12
1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut in 1 inch chunks 1 pound andouille sausage, sliced 1 large yellow onion, chopped 1 large green pepper, chopped 1 C. chicken broth 2 tsp. dried oregano 2 tsp. dried parsley 2 tsp. cajun seasoning 1 tsp. cayenne pepper 1/2 tsp. dried thyme 1 pound frozen cooked shrimp without tails Directions 1. Combine all ingredients in slow cooker except shrimp and stir. Cover and cook 8 hours on low or 4 hours on high. 2. Stir in the shrimp in the last 30 minutes of cooking. |

Most people say there are only two things guaranteed in life: death and taxes. Well I would like to submit to you a third guarantee: No matter how bad your life is, there is always someone worse off than you. I believe that it is more important to give than to receive. Additionally, it has been my personal experience that when I give generously, whether it be of time or money, the rewards I get are exponentially greater than anything I might have given. In this spirit, I am going to share with you each month opportunities available for us all to give back, for we are all greatly blessed, even in these times of struggle.
Big Day at the Lake 7
This is my favorite charity, and one I work for all through the year. Each year, over one hundred children and their sponsors from Big Brothers Big Sisters are invited for a day of boating fun on Lake Norman with a picnic at the Duke Energy Explorium afterward. These children would never have the opportunity to enjoy Lake Norman if it had not been for Dave Yochum's vision seven years ago.
To make this happen we need boat owners to volunteer to take these Bigs and Littles on their boat, donations of food and beverages for the giant picnic, workers to staff the event, and donations of money to help support Big Brothers Big Sisters. Sponsorships are available at several levels. If you can help out in any way, please email me at sensiblychic4u@aol.com or call Dave Yochum at 704.895.1335.
