Southern Christmas Show
Greetings!

November is one of my favorite months of the year. I choose to live my life  with gratitude, but there are many sad people who choose to only focus on what is wrong in their life. Thanksgiving Day gives everyone the opportunity to pause from our hectic lives and reflect  on all the blessings which have been bestowed upon us. My hope is that this "Attitude of Gratitude" will continue beyond  Thanksgiving Day and enrich everyone's lives each day forward.

One sure way to get in the holiday spirit is to attend the 43rd annual Southern Christmas Show.  It runs from Thursday, November 11th through Sunday, November 21st. The hours are Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays from 10 to 6 and Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10 to 9. There is a preview party Wednesday night, November 10th from 5:30 to 9:30 to benefit local charities. I am a featured designer, presenting a  dining room with the theme of "Feasting on Faith." I hope you will come out and visit and enjoy all the sights and sounds of the season.

Since the holidays are associated with reconnecting with family, I always dedicate my November issue to "Family Friendly Decorating." This issue will share ways to decorate so you can welcome family and friends is without worrying about how your home will survive. The Trend Report  tells what is new in family friendly decor. The Green Report provides family friendly ways to go green. The color of the month is Orange and the Recipe of the Month is an elegant appetizer, Roasted Pears with Herbed Goat Cheese and Bacon.

I would be remiss if I failed to tell you all how much I appreciate your friendship, your readership, and the opportunity to create the home of your families' dreams. Please forward this email to anyone you know who believes you don't have to sacrifice a beautiful home when you have a family.

Best,
Barbara Green

Family Friendly Decorating
Lif
Man
Merrium-Webster defines Family as 1. A group of individuals living under one roof, 2. A group of persons of common ancestry, 3. A group of people united by certain convictions or a common affiliation, or 4. A group of things related by common characteristics.

When we choose to welcome our family into our homes (whether they are of the "ancestral variety" or the "chosen family") the point of these gatherings is to improve our lives and build lasting, treasured memories. That is kind of hard if you are stressing over your furnishings. With that in mind, here are three  areas to consider when decorating so you can have a beautiful home and your family, too:

DESIGN
All the time I hear parents say they are waiting to decorate until their children grow up. I feel it is better to raise them in a beautiful home with an appreciation and respect for nice things and invite them to participate in the process and take ownership of the decor. The key to making this work is making the design comfortable and informal. Don't try for the museum look. You are only setting yourself up for a lot of frustration. Instead, choose an eclectic selection of furnishings. All furniture pieces should blend, rather than match, so that if something needs to be replaced, the new item will fit it without a problem. The room below features a comfy kid-friendly chenille sofa, slipcovered chairs, a patterned area rug (great for hiding mishaps) and a distressed wood table that will only get more beautiful with wear.

DURABILITY
This is probably the most important consideration when making EVERY selection for your interior. Walls should be painted with an eggshell or satin finish  to allow for easy cleaning when the fingerprints get the best of it. Floors should be  wood, laminate, bamboo, tile, or vinyl so you can clean easily with a broom and a mop. If wall to wall carpeting is your preference, select a medium to dark tone, preferably with a pattern to camouflage any stains. Buy the finest upholstered seating  you can afford, and make sure it is constructed from kiln-dried  hardwood which has been glued, screwed, corner blocked and 8-way hand-tied. Cheap furniture will end up in the landfill in a few years, costing you more in the long term both financially and environmentally. Tables should have a surface that is stone, tile, or distressed wood, so the daily wear and tear will only enhance its beauty, as in the bench  servings as a coffee table, below.

STORAGE
People today have a lot of stuff. Homes can get taken over by books, magazines, CDs, DVDs,  iPods, video games, computer supplies, toys, games, pets, children, clothing, shoes, boots, (not necessarily in order of importance...)  The key to taming this beast is to incorporate plenty of storage options throughout your home. Decorative boxes and baskets can help corral the smaller items into manageable collections which can be stored on shelves, on top of armoires, or in cabinets. Put coat hooks near the door at both adult and child height to keep outerwear and backpacks from landing on the floor or furniture. Customize closets and garages with storage systems designed specifically for what you need to store. Avoiding clutter will allow you and your guests to relax and have a good time. The room below optimizes storage by using large stacked picnic baskets as end tables, a storage ottoman as a coffee table, and a wall of shelves with boxes and baskets for smaller items along with books and other decorative objects.

Trend Report
by Article AuthorEvery fall, France hosts Maison & Objet, one of the most talked about home furnishings trade shows in the world. Three of the trends they reported on were perfect for family friendly decorating.

TEXTURE
The buzzword was texture, including fabrics with puckers, pleats, tweeds, and frayed edges. Metals had embossing and patterns. Wood was distressed. All this means easy wear for family decor. If you are buying something frayed, who cares if the fraying continues. You can tell your guests it was supposed to be that way! Distressed finishes mean more character will be added with each use.

ETHNIC DECOR
With the affordability of world travel and international goods, our interiors can easily reflect the designs of our ancestors or the homes we wish we descended from. Your home can even be a "United Nations" kind of design, since Maison & Objet reports on the trend of "Mash-Up Style" incorporating design elements from all different nations. A word of caution: make sure there is a unifying element among the disparate items you select, whether it be color, shape, or style.

FRUITY FURNITURE AND ACCESSORIES
While many people love the security of neutral colors, you can now throw caution to the wind and add some bold color with fruit-colored furniture and accessories. Let your fruit bowl inspire you with Cherry Reds, Bright Oranges, Lemony Yellows, Lime Greens, and Grape Purples. It adds fun and life to a dull, drab room and your kids will love it! One of my favorite sources for bright designs is Company C, and below is an example of some of their items. I carry the entire line if you are ready to go bold.

Color of the Month
by Article AuthorAs we all learned in art class, orange is a combination of red and yellow. It combines the power and passion of red with the good nature of yellow. In Feng Shui it is the color of knowledge and activity, which makes it a great color for offices, studies, and living rooms. You are sure to have lively conversations with family and friends in this bold living room combining orange with one of today's hottest neutral colors, gray.

Avoid using orange in a child's bedroom, unless you want to keep them energized all night long. However, it has been proven to be very effective at keeping students attentive and learning in classrooms. Below is a recently completed classroom at Walsh College in Troy, Michigan.

Orange energizes thinking and communication, stimulates spirituality, reinforces fidelity, and helps to free you from feelings of loneliness. In my humble opinion, that makes it the perfect color for a marriage counselor's office. Perhaps the sofa below might be a good place to start...

If you fear committing to an entire room of orange, you can always start with orange accents. The upholstery on the dining room chairs and the spheres on the table add just enough color to make this brown room come alive.

Green Report
by Article Author
"Going Green" should be a family affair. Everyone can contribute to reduce, reuse, and recycle to painlessly make our environment and our families healthier. Here are some easy ways to increase your family's green factor:
  • Don't kill that spider. There are an estimated 40,000 species of spiders, and they all eat insects. They're an important part of the food web and provide natural pest control.
  • Buy toys that last. Toys are made, directly or indirectly, from natural resources. Choose toys that won't break easily so you aren't always buying more stuff or creating more trash.
  • Choose rechargeable batteries. You'd have to use hundreds of single-use batteries to equal the energy you'd get out of one rechargable battery. Be sure to recycle all batteries to keep harmful metals from entering the environment.
  • Make your own reusable shopping bag or find a strong bag that you like around the house. Next time you head out shopping, bring it along and say "no bag, please" at the check out counter. By carrying your own bag you will help reduce the 1 million plastic bags that end up harming animals and polluting our oceans every year.
  • Use bath towels again. After your shower or bath hang your towel neatly to dry so you can use it again the next day. It will help cut down on the amount of laundry and save water.
  • Turn off lights. Every time you leave a room for more than a minute or find a light left on in the house, turn it off. By flipping that switch, you save energy and keep greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere.
  • Save water while washing hands and brushing teeth. Turn the water off while lathering up. Instruct children to sing Happy Birthday while washing so they know they have lathered long enough. Then turn the water back on and rinse really well.
  • Read labels. Check labels on everyday products, including shampoos and toothpaste. How many words in the ingredient list can you actually pronounce? Chances are, if you can't pronounce them they are not eco-friendly.
  • Serve your family locally grown and organic foods. Food grown locally does not have to be shipped very far so they cut down on the amount of exhaust going into the air. Organic foods are grown without the use of unhealthy pesticides which are bad for our bodies and the Earth. Farmer's Markets are a great place to shop for these kinds of foods.

Let us remember that, as much has been given us, much will be expected from us, and that true homage comes from the heart as well as from the lips, and shows itself in deeds.  ~Theodore Roosevelt
Recipe of the Month

Since we are approaching the season of entertaining I thought I would share an easy and elegant appetizer to serve guests. The original idea came from Tyler Florence on the Food Network, but I simplified it for easier prep. Whether you choose to serve it before the Thanksgiving feast, or save it for another occasion, I do encourage you to try it while delicious pears are in season.

Pears with Goat Cheese and Bacon

Roasted Pears with Herb Goat Cheese and Bacon
Makes 24 appetizers

12 Small Pears
1/2 Pound Herb-flavored Goat Cheese
12 Slices Bacon, cut in half
Olive Oil for Drizzling
Salt and Freshly Ground Pepper to taste

Halve the pears and scoop out the seeds and cores. Divide the goat cheese between the 12 pear halves (approx. 1 tablespoon per half.) Wrap each stuffed pear with a slice of bacon and place it on a baking sheet. Drizzle some olive oil over the pears and season them with salt and pepper. Bake them until the pears are tender and the bacon is crisp, about 25 to 30 minutes. Serve immediately. (In photo, plate is garnished with arugula)

Most people say there are only two things guaranteed in life: death and taxes. Well I would like to submit to you a third guarantee: No matter how bad your life is, there is always someone worse off than you. I believe that it is more important to give than to receive. Additionally, it has been my personal experience that when I give generously, whether it be of time or money, the rewards I get are exponentially greater than anything I might have given. In this spirit, I am going to share with you each month opportunities available for us all to give back, for we are all greatly blessed, even in these times of struggle.

Charlotte Rescue Mission
Imagine what it would be like to be homeless and hungry on Thanksgiving Day, a holiday associated with gratitude and abundance. Did you know that if you and a friend skipped going to the movies one night and instead donated that money to the Charlotte Rescue Mission you could feed ten people on Thanksgiving? If you usually get popcorn and soda you could increase the number of people your feed to 20! It is astounding how much good a meager sacrifice on our part can do. Please go to charlotterescuemission.org or call 704.333.HOPE and give generously so that everyone can have a Happy Thanksgiving, no matter what their circumstances are.

CommunityQUEST
In my personal quest to share the needs of local charities I was lucky enough to find out about  CommunityQUEST.org . This website was designed to help charitable organizations collect donation items and increase their visibility in the community. Charities are able to post their needs and volunteers are able to offer their services. The website also has a calendar listing upcoming charitable events. Be sure to check out the website and find someone to serve. Life is so much more rewarding when you are helping others.
