Dear   ,

I would like to thank all of you who came out to the Southern Christmas Show and saw the "Visions of Sugarplums" room I decorated and attended my "Sensibly Chic Holiday Decorating" presentations. I hope you had a great time enjoying the sights, sounds, and tastes of Christmas. It was such an honor to participate in the 42nd year of this Southern Tradition, and it might just have been the best one yet! For my out of state friends who couldn't make it, I thought you might like to see how the room turned out:

               Southern Christmas Show
It was a very high calorie room, with all the topiaries on the mantle crafted from candy, and the tree addorned with lollipops, pixie sticks, giant candies, and more.

The custom headboard was made to look like a gingerbread house. The room was certainly a favorite for children of all ages.

This holiday issue will feature my "Top Ten Tips for Holiday Decorating." The Trend Report shows how to decorate with non-traditional colors. The Color of the Month is Red, and Green Design brings you eco-friendly and affordable decorating ideas. The recipe of the month is a rich and delicious Chocolate Chunk Pecan Pie sure to please all your holiday guests.

I wish you and your family much peace, love, and happiness during this holiday season! Please feel free to contact me at sensiblychic4u@aol.com with any questions or comments.

Holiday Decorating

Are you tired of the "same old - same old" when it comes to your holiday decorations? Do you want something new, but are on a tight budget? Here is my list of "Top 10 Sensibly Chic Holiday Decorating Tips." You are sure to find a few that will help you freshen up your decor without busting your budget.

10. Wrap it up... Wrapping paper isn't just for presents anymore! Wrap empty boxes for a pretty centerpiece or mantle display.

9. If a little is good, more is better... Instead of hanging one large wreath on the door, hang three. I got my wreaths and the ribbon at the dollar store so each set only cost four dollars!

8. Get crafty... These ornaments are easy and fun to make with your children or grandchildren and look super sweet on the tree.

7. Pick a Color, Any Color... Whatever color you choose, use it for ornaments, wrapping paper, candles, stockings, and pillows for an elegant look.

                                   Christmas White
6. Ahh the smell of it...Nothing makes a home more welcoming than the scent of cookies in the oven. Be adventurous and try your hand out at making a gingerbread house for a festive addition to your holiday decor. If you are "baking-challenged," simple burn a sugar cookie or gingerbread scented candle and construct your gingerbread house out of graham crackers. Below left is the real gingerbread, below right is the graham cracker base. I dare your friends to be able to tell the difference!

5. Tradition... Start a new tradition of family walks in the woods to gather pine boughs and pinecones for no cost decoration. This arrangement utilizes holly and pine clippings, fallen branches, and pinecones and would look lovely on a mantle or as a centerpiece for a buffet table.

4. New life for Collections... Instead of going out and buying new decorations, look for collections of objects you may have accumulated over the years. It doesn't have to be "Christmas-y;" if it has special meaning to your family it will make your use of them special, too. The tree below is covered in treasures from a family's many trips to the beach. What have you been saving that you can tie a ribbon on and hang on the tree?

3. Power in numbers... If you are looking to create drama in your decor, simply choose an item and use it generously. Whether it is ornaments, some santas, or snowmen, if you gather many together it makes a greater statement. On the left an assortment of ornaments are simply suspended from the ceiling with fishing line.To the right more ornaments are displayed in clear glass containers.

2. Candles... Add a beautiful glow to your holiday rooms and save on your electric bill, too! Group assorted sizes, shapes, and heights together, but keep them all the same color. (An added bonus is everyone looks better in candlelight!)

1. Behold the Dollar Store... If you haven't been to one lately, be prepared to be wowed. My most recent visit garnered beautiful ornaments, ribbons, wreaths, picture frames, candles, christmas stockings, toys and candy. I used all of these items for one-of-a-kind holiday decor for my decorator room and presentations at the Southern Christmas Show.

Hold on to your hats folks, because Christmas is going BOLD. Traditionalists need not apply!! Forget the red and green, we are going turqoise, fuschia, purple, and lime green. Fresh and unique, these colors breath new life into your holiday decor. They are perfect for blended families that celebrate both Christmas and Hannukah. This look is so easy to achieve: simply decoupage brightly colored wrapping paper onto a decorative container, then wrap some empty boxes in more colorful paper and tuck into the container with some color-coordinated ornaments.

                    Christmas Bold

Bring the bold look to your windows by hanging more ornaments from ribbons.

For a modern tablescape, place a runner of blue tulle (inexpensively purchased at the fabric store) down the center of your table. Next, set a glass punch bowl on a metallic blue wreath (only $2 at Target!!) and fill with more ornaments. Flank the bowl with 2 mini trees, drape some ribbon and sprinkle with more ornaments. You've got a table worth talking about in only five minutes!

Color of the Month

Red is always the Color of the Month for December. The power of red is distinctive throughout the world. Did you know that in India brides wear red gowns instead of white? In China it is the color of luck and happiness, while here in the Western World it is the color of love and passion. It is a traditional color for holiday decorating, but looks great in the home year-round, too. The dining room below is chic and sophisticated with rich gray walls and dramatic red upholstery.

The living room below should inspire those of you with color courage. Not for the faint of heart, this is a daring and dramatic use of color.

I always tell you that if you aren't adventurous enough to paint your walls a bold color, you can accessorize with it for an equally attractive look. The key to this look is balancing the red accents evenly throughout the room.

Most holiday decorations are made from non-renewable resources, and are manufactured in factories that pollute the environment. After they are made they need to be transported by trucks doing further damage to the environment. This month Green Design is sending you all out to the woods to reduce your carbon footprint and forage for your holiday decor. Invite the family along, and create precious memories in addition to beautiful displays. You are using things that are plentiful in nature, and will biodegrade when the celebrations are over. The elegant mantle below is simply draped with greenery trimmed from pine trees, with a few candles and flowers sprinkled in.
                             Evergreen Mantle
The rustic mantle below was crafted from pinecones gathered on a brisk late autumn walk.  In the Carolinas we are blessed with an abundance of pine trees, and the ground below them is littered with pinecones. Enlist your family to gather bags of pinecones to bring home for one of a kind displays. String some together to form the garland, place some in pots and urns as topiaries, and fill baskets and bowls with the extras for a pretty tabletop display.

                        Pinecone Mantle

For an organic centerpiece, fill a bowl or basket with fruits, nuts, pinecones, and greenery. Finish off by sticking some tapers among it for an inviting display.

Recipe of the Month

My birth certificate may show I was born in New Jersey, but I have thoroughly embraced all things Southern. Manors and Manners, Beaches and Mountains, Wheeping Willows and Magnolias, Hospitality and Hope, Grits and Gravy,  the south has it all. One southern classic is the Pecan Pie. I have a great recipe that improves upon the tradition with the addition of chocolate, because everything is better with chocolate, right? It is very simple to make, and a great gift when visiting friends or relatives.

Chocolate Chunk Pecan Pie

1 refrigerated or frozen pie crust, baked as directed on package
1 ounce unsweetened chocolate, finely chopped
4 T unsalted butter
2 eggs
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup dark corn syrup
1/4 cup heavy cream
3/4 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp salt
1 1/2 cups coarsely chopped pecans
6 ounces quality bittersweet chocolate (Lindt or Ghiradelli)

1. Place butter and unsweetened chocolate in a microwave safe cup and microwave until chocolate is melted (check every 30 seconds). Allow to cool.
2. In a large bow, beat eggs until light and fluffy. Beat in sugar and corn syrup until well blended. Beat in cream, vanilla, and salt, then the cooled chocolate-butter mixture. Fold in nuts and chocolate chunks.
3. Pour filling into the cooled piecrust and place on baking sheet. Bake in the center of a preheated 350 degree oven 45 minutes, or until center still wiggles very slightly (it will set completely as it cools; do not overbake or filling will be dry).

Most people say there are only two things guaranteed in life: death and taxes. Well I would like to submit to you a third guarantee: No matter how bad your life is, there is always someone worse off than you. I believe that it is more important to give than to receive. Additionally, it has been my personal experience that when I give generously, whether it be of time or money, the rewards I get are exponentially greater than anything I might have given. In this spirit, I am going to share with you each month opportunities available for us all to give back, for we are all greatly blessed, even in these times of struggle.

Coat and Blanket Drive
How many of us live in warm homes with forgotten coats and blankets stashed away in the closets? I know I am guilty. The Charlotte Observer has launched a coat and blanket drive to benefit the clients of Crisis Assistance Ministry.  There are thousands of families that can't afford a new coat for themselves or their children and are shivering themselves to sleep. Please take some time out of this busy holiday season and go through your closets. You can drop your extra coats and blankets at any Mecklenburg County library, Queen City Audio, Video, & Appliance Store or the Charlotte Observer's lobby now through December 23rd. Give the gift of warmth to someone less fortunate. For more information about the many services of Crisis Assistance Ministry you can go to their website crisisassistance.org or contact Kris Van Riper at 704-371-3001, ext 126.

Angels and Sparrows Soup Kitchen
This organization is relatively new in Huntersville, and their mission is to provide food and nourishment for the bodies and souls of men, women and children who face hunger in their daily lives, without regard to race, color, religion, gender, age, national origin or physical or mental disabilities. They serve lunch Monday through Friday, year-round including holidays. They are in need of cash donations, grocery gift cards, broth of any kind, canned vegetables and fruits, saltines, tea, sugar, and macaroni. They are also in need of non-judgemental volunteers willing to treat their clients with dignity and respect. For more information, go to angelsandsparrows.org or call 704-918-0122.
