Southern Christmas Show
hor
Dear  ,

Welcome to November, the month for giving thanks. I am particularly grateful for all the love and support my friends, clients, and business associates have shown me after the passing of my dear brother, Eric Knapp. He fought a courageous battle with cancer and outlived all medical expectations, but went to rest with the Lord on October 19th. Thank you for the cards, letters, flowers, and words of encouragement. It is in these times of struggle that the good is revealed to all of us.

How fitting is it that November is my annual "Family Edition?" I will share tips for Family Friendly Decorating and a report on Family Friendly Decorating Trends. The Color of the Month is Orange, and the Green Report will share ways you can work together to reduce, reuse, and recycle when decorating your home. Finally, the recipe of the month, Turkey Shephard's Pie, makes good use of your Thanksgiving leftovers.

If you are looking forward to Christmas, a great place to jump start the holiday is at the Southern Christmas Show at The Park (formerly the Merchandise Mart) in Charlotte. It will be open from November 11 to 22. I am decorating a gingerbread-themed little girl's bedroom which will be on display near the entrance. I will also be presenting "Sensibly Chic Holiday Decorating" on the main stage Friday, November 13th at 1pm, Friday November 20th at 1pm, and Sunday November 22nd at 2pm. Come and kick off the holiday season with me!

Have an awesome month, and please feel free to contact me at sensiblychic4u@aol.com with any questions or comments.

Family Friendly Decorating
by Article Author
How many of you grew up in homes where the living room was off limits? My mom hired a decorator for our living room, but we kids could only take a passing look, as it was off-limits except for when company came. I remember my grandparents even had *GASP* plastic slipcovers to protect their furniture from seven active grandchildren. Thankfully those days are long gone, and home design has become much more practical. Four main areas to consider are:

Walls: Kids are really tough on walls. Their fingerprints end up everywhere! Make sure you paint with satin finish paint or you'll lose the battle before it has even begun. Wainscotting and beadboard are also great options because they get coated with durable semi-gloss paint. For those of you who want to encourage your child's creativity, you can buy chalkboard paint and turn any surface in your home into a canvas for your child's artwork.

Floors: My preference for family friendly flooring is laminate, but wood, tile, and vinyl are also good options. If you want to add an area rug, consider one of those that are manufactured for outdoor living spaces. They come in hundreds of beautiful designs (one example is below), but when these get dirty you just drag them outside and hose them off. How simple is that? If you are intent on having wall to wall carpeting, keep the pile low and tight for easier cleaning.

                                    outdoor rugs

Furniture: This may seem counter-intuitive, but buy the best you can afford. High quality sofas, loveseats, and chairs are made with kiln-dried hardwoods that are screwed, glued, cornerblocked, and 8-way hand tied. What does that mean? It means they will hold up to even the most rambunctious of children. Cheaper seating will end up in the landfill before your child even graduates from kindergarten. As for what to cover it with? Microfiber (shown below), leather, or denim are top choices. Two newer options are Sunbrella and Crypton. Sunbrella was originally designed for outdoor use, but its durability is perfect for indoor family use. Crypton was designed for use in medical facilities, but is now available through designers for home use. You honestly cannot get anything more durable than that.

Accessories: Families with children should always observe the "four feet rule":  anything delicate, breakable, or of sentimental value should be placed four feet off the floor or higher. The theory is, by the time your offspring can reach that high, they are old enough to respect the objects and not break them.  Lofty goal, huh? Also integrate lots of storage into your design plans. Children generate loads of clutter between their toys, games, and schoolwork. Provide baskets, bins, and cubbies to contain the messes. I love storage ottomans (photo above) for the sheer volume of stuff you can hide in them!
Trend Report

The three big trends for family friendly decorating right now include a movement back to nature, mix and match decorating, and the use of metallics.

Back to Nature: Options abound for natural living. We have rugs made from sisal, jute, and seagrass. Flooring selections include bamboo, cork, and reclaimed wood. Organic fabrics, once difficult to come by, are readily available in many styles, colors, and textures. There is a new and growing interest in sustainable furniture. All these products are practical options for today's active families.

Mix and Match Decorating:  I hope you have been reading the Design Diva Dishes long enough to know that you shouldn't be buying the "sofa, loveseat, and chair package" from your local furniture store. Instead you should be purchasing complimentary pieces that work together without being too "matchy-matchy." This will be a blessing when one of your children or grandchildren decides to go all Picasso on your chair with a Sharpie marker (you know who you are!). You can simply replace one piece rather than the entire collection.

Metallic Finishes:  To add some design interest to all the natural textures, incorporate some metallic finishes into the family room. Metallics can be found in lighting, artwork, and accessories. Not only do they add an attractive glow to the room, they are unbreakable, which is always a plus with kids around.

Color of the Month
by Article Author
Driving around this time of year offers beautiful vistas of fiery orange mums, brightly hued leaves, and plump pumpkins. It is in honor of nature's beautiful display that makes orange our color of the month. Such a vibrant hue can be quite intimidating to the casual decorator, but it can offer drama and beauty with the mere opening of a paint can. My best advice for utilizing a bold color, would be to balance the brightness with generous use of white.

Another tip when using bold color is to keep the design simple. The focus should be the rich color. Using too many patterns or accessories will overwhelm an already energized space.

I always advise clients to embrace color as it is the easiest way to add style and drama to a room. Of course, some of them are never going to agree to such a daring color on the walls, so the fainthearted can keep their white walls, but be daring with the pillows and accessories. They are an easy and inexpensive way to change the look whenever the spirit moves you.

Green Design
by Article Author
Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle is the mantra of the green movement and those principles integrate perfectly into family friendly design:

Reduce: We are a consumption-based society, and fill our homes with much more "stuff" than we really need. I encourage you all to buy quality and not quantity. Commit to reducing the number of items you purchase, and instead invest in a few classics that will last forever. That $500 sofa may seem like a bargain, but it will end up costing you more in the long run because it will need to be replaced sooner than a quality piece of furniture.  When it comes to accessorizing, choose something you love, something substantial, and not a jumble of useless clutter.

Reuse: Before you get rid of something, think about whether you can reuse it in a different room or for a different purpose. After my chandelier crashed onto the top of my glass dining room table, I re-purposed the base as a console table instead of throwing it away. When I got a larger television, my living room entertainment armoire got moved into a bedroom for extra storage. If you can't find a new place for something in your own home, consider donating it to Goodwill or the Salvation Army or post it on Craigslist or Freecycle . Remember, one person's trash is another person's treasure.

Recycle: Recycling home products is a new but growing industry. Did you know that each year, roughly 2.5 million tons of waste carpet reaches landfills in the US? This accounts for almost 3% of total landfill space. When it is time to replace your wall to wall carpeting make sure your supplier can haul the old carpet to a recycling center. Recycled carpet by-products can be used for the manufacture of new carpeting, carpet padding, building products, and resins for the plastics industry. The over one million square feet of carpet that was just removed from the Charlotte Convention Center is now powering an industrial plant in South Carolina!
Quote of the Month

The Pilgrims made seven times more graves than huts. No Americans have been more impoverished than these who, nevertheless, set aside a day of Thanksgiving.

Recipe of the Month
OK, so who doesn't have leftovers after Thanksgiving dinner? Instead of just reheating, why not transform your leftovers into a delicious Turkey Shepard's Pie?
You should have most of the ingredients on hand, and will savor the transformation.

Turkey Shepard's Pie

Ingredients
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
4 teaspoons olive oil
1 cup chopped yellow onions
2 carrots, peeled and chopped (about 1 cup)
1/4 teaspoon plus 1/8 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon minced garlic
4 ounces mushrooms, stemmed, wiped clean, and sliced
1/2 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme leaves
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons tomato paste
2 to 2 1/2 cups chopped or shredded roast turkey (white and/or dark meat)
1 1/4 cups chicken stock or canned chicken broth
1/2 cup green peas
4 cups leftover mashed potatoes
3/4 cup grated sharp or medium Cheddar

Directions
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Lightly grease a 9-inch square or 2.2 quart baking dish with the butter and set aside.

In a large saute pan or skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the onions, carrots, salt, and pepper and cook, stirring, until the onions are soft, about 3 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, for 20 seconds. Add the mushrooms and thyme and cook, stirring, until the mushrooms are soft, 3 to 4 minutes. Add the flour and cook, stirring, until thick, about 1 minute. Stir in the tomato paste and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Add the meat and stir well to combine. Gradually add the stock and then the peas, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer until the mixture is thickened, 6 to 8 minutes.

Remove from the heat. Carefully transfer to the prepared dish and spoon the potatoes over the meat mixture, spreading to the edges. Sprinkle with the cheese and bake until the cheese is bubbly and the potatoes are crisp around the edges, 22 to 25 minutes. Let sit for 10 minutes before serving.

Most people say there are only two things guaranteed in life: death and taxes. Well I would like to submit to you a third guarantee: No matter how bad your life is, there is always someone worse off than you. I believe that it is more important to give than to receive. Additionally, it has been my personal experience that when I give generously, whether it be of time or money, the rewards I get are exponentially greater than anything I might have given. In this spirit, I am going to share with you each month opportunities available for us all to give back, for we are all greatly blessed, even in these times of struggle.

Charlotte Rescue Mission
Imagine what it would be like to be homeless and hungry on Thanksgiving, a holiday associated with gratitude and abundance. Did you know that if you and a friend skipped going to the movies one night and instead donated that money to the Charlotte Rescue Mission you could feed ten people for Thanksgiving? And if you usually get popcorn and sodas while at the movies your donation could feed twenty people! It is astounding how much good such a meager sacrifice on our part can do. Please go to charlotterescuemission.org or call (704)333-HOPE and give generously so that everyone can have a Happy Thanksgiving, no matter what their circumstances may be.
