In Memory of Jack Kemp, July 13, 1935 - May 2, 2009

On May 2nd, my father, Jack Kemp, passed away after a five month battle with melanoma. The gift of this five month farewell has added to our peace and assurance of God's goodness and faithfulness. He was my greatest encourager and an enthusiastic supporter of our mission at Stronger Families.

Like us all, my father was far from perfect, but he left us a model of passion that would serve us well to follow.  Please glean inspiration from the remembrances my siblings and I shared of dad at his memorial service.

Love and Respect Follow Up
By Noel Meadorlove and respect

Love & Respect was a huge success with over 3,928 people in attendance between the Portland and Seattle events. It was encouraging to see so many couples seeking to strengthen their marriage. The stories continue to come into our office about couples who were touched by this powerful message of Love & Respect. Several couples on the verge of divorce, reported this conference has saved their marriage.

If you weren't able to attend, or you want to reinforce the material you learned at the conference, we encourage you to seek out a small group featuring the Love and Respect material.  For your convenience, we've compiled a list of Love and Respect Marriage Small Groups in the Portland, OR, and Seattle, WA area!

In the meantime, keep reading to learn why the Love and Respect message is transformational. Find out why respect is so important for a man and how love can change the heart of a woman.

How You Can Spend Quality Time with Your Kids
By Luke Nelson

Parents are the most important factor in balanced child development.  Recent studies have shown that the more time parents spend talking with their children improves their vocabulary skills, reasoning skills, and reading comprehension.  In one startling study, researchers used microphones to track the amount of meaningful conversation logged between parents and their children. While parents reported they spent 1.5 to 2 hours talking with their kids per day, the study actually showed that, on average, parents and their children engaged in less than 9 minutes of meaningful conversation a day. Intentionality is the key to creating quality interaction.

While we are recognized as mothers and fathers with our special days in May and June, respectively, it is a good time to assess our influence as parents and find new ways to connect to our families.  I have provided the following options for you to consider.

Bringing Baby Home
By Krista Fogelson

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, after their baby arrived, 67% of couples surveyed experienced increased conflict, greater emotional disturbances, and higher levels of marital dissatisfaction.  Seattle based psychologist, Dr. John Gottman and his wife, Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman, noted that parents spend countless hours decorating the nursery and researching the safest products to purchase for their baby.   However, most are unaware they need to prepare for the emotional strain a newborn baby will put on their lives.

In response, the Gottmans created the Bringing Baby Home (BBH) workshop to guide couples through the transitions of having a new baby.
