The 20th anniversary production of KidsActing's summer musical hit Monsters! is in full swing with rehearsals, and the cast is having a truly MONSTROUS blast! In a fun twist, the show this year is being directed by one of the original Monsters! cast members, Kirk German, who created the role of Revor (the singing dog ) back in 1991. Two decades later, Revor is now being played by Hannah Hufford, a pint-sized cutie-patootie with a killer set of pipes. During a recent busy practice (while the other girls were singing and dancing in What's a Boy?, a peppy '50s style tune that's one of the show's biggest numbers), we took a moment to catch up with Hannah and hear her thoughts on all things kidsActing.
Hi, Hannah! How are you today?
Good!
Tell us a little about yourself... how long have you been doing kidsActing?
Two and a half years. My very first show was Alice in Wonderland - I played the March Hare and the Prosecutor, and yeah... I was really scared that I wasn't going to know my lines for that one, because it was my first show... Also, the March Hare costume was really hot.
Well, it's no small feat (and no small feet) to be a rabbit! What else do you remember from that show?
I was one of the youngest kids in the whole class; my friend just brought me there. Nina was the director - and so, I learned the part, and all the choreography, and it was really fun... it was my first show ever, of any kind!
When did you realize you wanted to do more plays?
After Alice, I didn't really think about doing another show... but then Nina asked me to do Schoolhouse Rock, and I thought: "OK, I guess I'll do it" - and that's when I started to really love it. I got to sing "Inter-Planet Janet!" I really wanted that solo, and I got it, and there were all these cool, kind-of-funky costumes in the show, and everybody was really nice, and I liked it so much that I kept doing it!
What other parts have you played at kidsActing?
In Annie I was Lily; I was Dorothy in a summer camp Wizard of Oz... and in Sound of Music, I was Liesl, and then in Beauty & the Beast, I was Belle! ...And now I'm here!
What other parts do you want to play some day?
I haven't really played any mean characters yet... well, I played Lily, but she's more dumb than mean. I kind of wanted to be Miss Hannigan, but my friend always gets the mean parts. She gets them because she's really good at being mad-- she's all like 'GRRR... !' I can't make a straight face that well-- I'm always smiling! But I'd still like to play a villain some day.
What's the funniest thing that's happened to you on stage?
One time in Annie-well, it wasn't really funny to Rooster, but he put his fake moustache in his hat, and I thought I was supposed to take away his hat, so I did, and I accidentally flipped it over, and lost the moustache!
Well, the show most go on, after all! What do you think about playing Revor in Monsters!?
It's really fun because the dog is always loving and cuddly, and it looks a like a little dinosaur -- I think? I'm excited about that costume! Plus, Revor gets to sing, and there's a really big cast... I've never been in the Advanced Class before. Everybody's been fun so far; and I like singing, and running the script, and the choreography - I like everything!!
So you think people should come see Monsters! ?
Yes! It's an awesome show with really cool props and costumes, and really good singers and actors and dancers, and it's a cool story, too! And kidsActing shows are always really fun. There's lots of cool stuff, and everybody's really nice. I really like that!
What other stuff do you do besides kidsActing?
I really like taking voice with my teacher Larissa; she's always helped me... and Noel always helps, too! And dance is really fun -- it's ballet, tap and jazz -- my favorite is probably tap, because it makes cool sounds and it's fast and goes like 'tee-ta-ta-ta-ta!' I also like swimming and gymnastics... but I like acting the most!
We're glad to hear it, Hannah! Thanks for the great interview! High Five!
...You can see Hannah (along with many other of kidsActing's brightest talents) in Monsters! August 5-14 at Center Stage Texas! You'll also get to hear Hannah and the whole cast sing a rousing number written by Willie Nelson just for Monsters! Mark your calendars now!

MONSTERS!
 Center Stage Texas August 5-14 Fridays 7pm Saturdays 2pm & 7pm Sundays 2pm
Exactly twenty years after its stellar debut, kidsActing's wildly entertaining original 1991 musical, Monsters!, is back in its quirkiest revival yet, arriving this summer on our own Center Stage Texas stage. Monsters! is the story of the Eebnezals, a typical nuclear Monster family whose world gets turned upside-down when younger brother Ybobb discovers a portal under his bed that leads to a parallel universe inhabited by spooky and scary HUMANS, who are more like themselves than they ever imagined... With music by some of Texas' finest songwriters, including Jimmy LaFave, The Austin Lounge Lizards, David Garza, Robert "Beto" Skiles, and the man himself, Willie Nelson, this show is a funny, thought-provoking, and sure-fire hit that proves "We're All a Blur Under the Fur!"

Center Stage Texas Summer Scholarships
How YOU Can Help!
|
As busy parents, you know the value of a safe place for your kids to go during the summer. kidsActing summer camps offer a wonderful community of students and a fun learning opportunity. This is an option that doesn't exist for many low income families in East and Central Austin. Many of you have been extremely generous throughout the year as contributors to CST. We are delighted to let you know that because of friends like you, 10 CST students have already received scholarships to participate in camps this summer.

As we near that half-way point through the summer, we would love to send even more CST students to camp!Students were nominated by their semester teachers based on their dedication to learning their lines, songs, and dances as well as their leadership in CST classes. Your donation today, in any amount, will support scholarships for more motivated, talented and deserving students.
As a bonus, if you donate $100 or more, you will receive a Center Stage Texas hat!
