Dear Friends, I'm sitting at my desk...it's 45 degrees outside...two days ago it was 86 degrees. Good grief! But wait...it's raining, too! We haven't seen substantial rain in central Texas for months now and while I would much rather it be raining on a warm day, I'll take it on this cold wintery day! Maybe we will have a bluebonnet pop its little head through since they're getting a drink from the heavens.
Have you begun to clean out the flower beds? Have you washed your pots in preparation for planting if you didn't do it in the fall? Have you started your seeds? Depending on where you are, these may be things you have already done or are getting ready to do. Read on for some other exciting things you can be preparing for or starting already.......it's time.....we've been patiently waiting....now get out there and get dirty! |

Our family is busy preparing for our spring and summer vegetable gardens. While we personally have space for a large garden, our children do not. One has begun some raised beds and is mixing veggies with ornamental plantings in the flower beds. The other is gardening on a much smaller scale in pots. Whatever your situation is, having your own victory garden not only makes for spending less at the grocery store it also creates family time for the different stages of the garden. This is a wonderful teaching opportunity for the little ones and a great therapy for the seasoned gardener. Think you have no time or room for this project? Check out the picture of this little victory garden I built in approximately a 5' X 3' space. Using gray cinder blocks, I built a frame for my garden. I put down weed block to keep the grasses and weeds from growing up into the garden. Placing the large plant stands inside the area and weighting them with rocks will allow me to have a three layer garden rather than just a single layer by adding the topiary spacers and pots on the upper levels. This little garden will yield plenty of the fresh veggies that we like to eat a lot of and you will notice it has been conveniently placed right outside the back door in easy reach for care and for harvesting. This is also great for those with back problems as you can sit in a chair to tend the garden. CUSTOMER SUBMISSION The picture at the left was submitted by Debra J. of Louisiana. She has added a new dimension to her Incredible Plant Stand by mixing clay pots with beautiful decorator pots. I especially like the way she has showcased the display. Notice that Debra has cleared a level area and lined it with terra cotta edging. Since she is not placing the display on a porch, but has chosen to put it in a garden spot, she has leveled and made her display more secure by using a 12" x 12" paver, in terra cotta, of course, to continue her color theme. The mulch Debra chose to fill in the ground area has just enough color contrast to add an interesting touch of depth and texture at the base. But wait! A vibrant splash of color really brings this garden to life in the beautiful decorator pots she has chosen to alternate with the terra cotta pots that remain the "grounding" medium. Even in Debra's plant choices can you see her careful planning. Too many different color plants in each pot would have been confusing to the eye. Debra has opted to highlight the colors in the pots with one color choice of plant per pot, complimenting the pots rather than overwhelming them. Her plants from top to bottom are marigolds, petunias, baricopa, and begonias. The petunias and the baricopa will trail beautifully to either side of the display while the marigolds and begonias will grow upright, which creates a well balanced look. Congratulations on a job well done, Debra! Keep up the good work. Debra's display will join our photo gallery on the web site that you are welcome to view at no charge! |
A PICTURE FROM MY GARDEN! I just had to include a picture of our jasmine that is exceptional this year. It's in it's fourth year in this spot by our garden shed and has bloomed beautifully. I haven't done a thing to it to help it along besides watering it ocassionally through the dry winter. I didn't expect it to be so happy, but look at how magnificently it has showered the garden with blooms! I was surprised and blessed by it's beauty and fragrance. PTL! |
