Valentine's Day, Shmalentine's Day
Dear ones,
I started writing this February newsletter last month, and it started off a little something like this:

"I'm in love, I'm in love!
I'm in love with

Yes, it's true. I've fallen, or rather risen up, in love with yours truly: moi. And I hope you all are, or soon will be, in love with yourselves too."

I wrote that after devouring don Miguel Ruiz's The Mastery of Love. This book reminded me of the importance of loving oneself. And it was a reminder I needed that first week of January, as I adjusted to being back home from Austin, and as I dealt with a flooded basement.  Despite all my meditation and qigong, I was feeling down. And that's part of being human. Ups and downs. And, quite honestly, one of the things bringing me down was the approach of Valentine's Day.

As soon as the new year rolled in, so did the hearts. And now we're surrounded by messages of love and possession(?!). Love you, love me, love this, love that, be mine, I'm yours.

But how about starting with loving yourself and just simply being?

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not the Grinch who Stole Valentine's Day. It's just that this year I'm feeling hyper-sensitive to anything that's inauthentic and done just out of a feeling of obligation or expectation. I've also been thinking a lot about love. It started a few months ago when a client asked me, "What is love?"

Although I won't try to answer that here, I will suggest that one way of many to love yourself, and just simply be, is to treat yourself to some relaxing and nurturing bodywork or energywork. And this leads me to the next topic, my latest love: CranioSacral Therapy!

Why I Love CranioSacral Therapy,
And What It Is....

Present. Grounded. Neutral.

A couple of weeks ago, I attended my 2nd CranioSacral training through The Upledger Institute, and I heard these 3 words spoken by the instructor.

While giving and receiving CranioSacral Therapy: "Be present. Grounded. And Neutral." What a great message, both for the practitioner and the client! One reason I love CranioSacral Therapy.

So what the heck is CranioSacral Therapy??

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) was developed by osteopathic physician John Upledger in the mid-seventies. It's a gentle hands-on modality for evaluating and enhancing the functioning of the craniosacral system. The craniosacral system consists of cerebrospinal fluid and membranes that protect and surround the brain and spinal cord.

During a session, the client is typically fully clothed and lying on one's back on a massage table. However, CranioSacral can be received in other positions, even sitting or standing. The touch used is soft and usually no more than 5 grams worth of pressure, which is approximately the weight of a nickel.

This gentle method of releasing restrictions improves the functioning of the central nervous system, facilitates clients' healing in general, and also is specifically helpful for ailments including, but not limited to, the following:

Migraine Headache
Chronic Neck and Back Pain
Motor-Coordination Impairments
Central Nervous System Disorders
Orthopedic Problems
Traumatic Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries
Infantile Disorders
Learning Disabilities
Chronic Fatigue
Emotional Difficulties
Stress and Tension-Related Problems
Fibromyalgia and other Connective-Tissue Disorders
Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ)
Neurovascular or Immune Disorders
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Post-Surgical Dysfunction releases

Sounds pretty good, doesn't it? And it is good; I've been receiving CranioSacral Therapy since my car accident in 1996! In fact, it was during a CST session that I first thought to myself, "Wow, I wanna learn how to do this!" Twelve years later, here I am, doing this, and I love it!

In addition to the meditative state of present, grounded, neutrality that it invokes in both the practitioner and the client, I love CranioSacral therapy as a client because it is incredibly relaxing, gentle, non-invasive, respectful, and effective. It's one of those modalities that can be difficult to explain and/or understand, but the results speak for themselves. And so I'm currently offering a discounted price to encourage you to try this modality. Experience CranioSacral for yourself.

Special offer: Your 1st 60-minute session for $30!

Regular prices:

Texas folks, I will be in Austin before and after the Wimberley teacher training. Please call my cell phone if you'd like to schedule a session: 206-599-9270.

I hope you'll give CranioSacral a try. It's a relaxing and gentle technique with profound therapeutic benefits. Although I do hope you'll try it with me, I also highly recommend Miyabi Gladstein in Mount Vernon, who trained with Ursula Popp rather than through Upledger. If you're in the Seattle area, I can refer you to someone in your area, or you can schedule something with me since I am in Seattle a couple of times a month.

Regardless of CranioSacral, or who you receive it from, I hope you do something for yourself, on a regular basis, to express love and gratitude to that body, mind, and soul of yours. You deserve it!

Happy Valentines Day!

With love,
