"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." -Margaret Mead.
Services facilitated by Project Access NOW have changed the world for thousands of our neighbors over the last four and half years. For every story we have been able to share, there are hundreds more that remain untold. People from different backgrounds and life stories share a common experience: They were connected to needed medical services in a dignified and timely manner.
We are excited about opportunities to be a part of creating community based, collaborative efforts to assure that we are indeed able to attain the goal stated by our national organization, Communities Joined in Action - Better Health for More People at Less Cost. Project Access NOW sees its specific role in this endeavor as assuring that the remaining uninsured will be included in systemic reforms as well as helping organizations work together to better meet the broad array of needs people have in order to be healthy.
Your thoughtful and committed support of Project Access NOW is changing the world for individuals every day, and is an important part of a long journey to change the health care world on a broader level. We thank you for all you have contributed so far and look forward to more work together as we move toward our shared future together.
Since we did not do an August E-Newsletter, there's so much to tell you about, so please read on. We opted this month to provide our newsletter in both an electronic and a mailed format. If you received our mailed version last week, you will recognize the stories and content.
I want to make sure to personally invite you to our Expressions event on Thursday, November 1st, Registration is now open, and you can click here, or on the link at left under Upcoming Events to purchase your admission. We are looking forward to enjoying the beautiful art and music at this exciting new event and we hope you can join us.
Sincerely,

Expressions: A Music and Arts Showcase to Benefit Project Access NOW
|
You are invited to join us at the lovely atrium at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center on Thursday, November 1st, as we use expressions of art and live music to celebrate our gratitude for good health and our commitment to a healthy community. We're excited to have the music of the DOC Jazz Quartet, comprised of several talented physicians from the area, as we peruse fabulous, quality art for sale and bid on several wonderful silent auction items. We'll enjoy scrumptious hors d' oeuvres and fine Oregon wines, compliments of physician-owned Z'IVO Wines. Proceeds from the sale of the art will be split among the artists and Project Access NOW. A portion of your $75 ticket purchase to the event will be a tax-deductible donation to Project Access NOW. We hope to see you there.

When Glen Larsen was about eight years old, he discovered painting. It became such an important part of his life that throughout a career in architecture, drafting and design, and while raising his family, he always found time to create art.
In late 2011, Glen went to see his primary care physician, Dr. Kerry Callahan, because he was short of breath and was always exhausted. Glen was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes and congestive heart failure. Glen needed to see a cardiologist, but he had no insurance, so Dr. Callahan's office referred him to Project Access NOW, who connected him to Dr. David Peizner of Pacific Heart Associates. Further testing revealed several of Glen's coronary arteries were blocked; his heart was a ticking time bomb and he was getting sicker by the day. In February of 2012, cardio-thoracic surgeon Dr. Jonathan Hill of The Oregon Clinic performed successful cardiac bypass surgery.

Tributes: Recognize Someone Special and Help Project Access NOW at the Same Time
|
|
Tribute gifts offer you a thoughtful way to celebrate a special person or occasion while contributing to our mission: to improve the health of our community by creating access to care and services for those most in need.
You can make the donation in someone's honor for events small and large. You can also ask others to give to Project Access NOW in lieu of gifts for your special days. Here are some examples of tribute gifts:
-
Honor your colleagues or family during the holidays, for weddings and anniversaries by making a contribution to PANOW in their name.
-
For your special birthday - and isn't every birthday special? - suggest that friends make a gift to PANOW for "the guy/gal who has everything."
-
Honor a new graduate with a donation to PANOW and inspire a sense of community goodwill for someone starting out on life's journey.
-
Instead of sending flowers, honor the memory of a loved one who has passed away with a donation to PANOW.
Project Access NOW will send the honoree a lovely card notifying them of the gift (but not the amount of the gift). Donors receive an acknowledgement letter for tax purposes.
You can donate online with a credit card at www.projectaccessnow.org.
You can also mail a check or money order made payable to Project Access NOW to PO Box 10953; Portland, OR 97296. Be sure to give us the occasion and the recipient's name and address.

Intern spotlight: Tamica Kent
|
Meet Tamica Kent, a student at Heald College and now an intern here at Project Access NOW. When Tamica's husband retired from the military in 2009, they moved from Texas back to his hometown of Portland so their seven children could be near their grandparents. Before the move, Tamica had a full-time job, working in an advocacy program for at-risk youth. It was a career she found fulfilling yet quite physically demanding and, at times, very stressful.
After moving to Portland, Tamica searched for a job in early childhood education - one that did not have as many physical demands. Tamica has systemic lupus erythematosus, and physical exertion or stress can cause flare ups of her condition.

Our Incredible Provider Volunteers
|
We currently have a network of about 3,000 provider volunteers who are the life blood of Project Access NOW. Without them we would not exist. Project Access NOW makes it easy for providers to donate care, allowing them the freedom to do what they do best - focus on healing.
Check the list of provider volunteers on our website. If your health care provider volunteers with Project Access NOW, please take a moment to say "Thank You!" the next time you go in for a visit. If your provider does not currently volunteer, please encourage him or her to do so. By joining others to "share the care," the impact on their time is minimal, but the impact on the health and lives of the people served is tremendous. (If you find your provider is participating but not on our list - please let us know! It is challenging to keep track of so many wonderful people!)

Why Donate to Project Access NOW?
|
The mission of Impact NW is to help people achieve and maintain self-sufficiency and to prevent and alleviate the effects of poverty. Good health is critical to a person's ability to maintain self-sufficiency. As the Executive Director of Impact NW, Susan Stoltenberg sees people every day who are not able to get the health care they need or do not get care soon enough.
Susan believes Project Access NOW fills a need in the community by connecting low-income, uninsured Portland-area residents to donated health care. It is easy for Impact NW to see the value of this. Impact NW case workers can more easily and efficiently meet the needs of their clients and get them on their way to being self-sufficient when their health care needs are taken care of.
Susan donates monthly to Project Access NOW through our on-line recurring gift option. By spreading out her donation over the year, she is able to give more.
Susan is grateful that Project Access NOW does outreach and education to health care providers, encouraging them to budget a portion of their time to donate care to those who need it but cannot afford it. It offers an efficient method for medical volunteers to provide value to the community. In the end, Susan believes more donated care is delivered to those who need it because of Project Access NOW. "So, who wouldn't want to invest in that?" she says.

|

If your company offers matching gifts: Check with your employer to see if they provide matching gifts and consider applying to have a donation sent to Project Access NOW.
You can make a Tribute in someone's honor. See details above.
You can set up a monthly recurring donation through our online donation page. It's easy and we've provided all the information for you. The money is billed to your credit card each month and you never have to remember to make your donation.
Donate via our monthly eNewsletter (you can sign up on our website). We've placed a Donate button there, so it's as easy as a click of your mouse.
Purchase a Charity Gift Card from Tisbest. The card works like any gift card from a big box store - with one meaningful exception: The recipient directs the funds to one or more of 250 national and local charities on the TisBest website. Project Access NOW is one of a few nonprofits in the Portland metropolitan area selected to launch this program locally. For every card purchased, TisBest will donate an extra $2 to PANOW. Details and a link to purchase the card are available on our website under the "Donate" tab.
And of course, you can snail mail us a check!
