Greetings!

Today, we join the Oregon Nurses Association and the Nurse Practitioners of Oregon in celebrating Nurses: Advocating, Leading, Caring, as part of National Nurses Week.

National Nurses Week begins on May 6th, with National Nurses Day, and concludes on May 12th, the birthday of perhaps the world's most famous nurse, Florence Nightingale.

Nurses comprise the largest health care profession, with approximately 3.1 million registered nurses in the United States, and 43,000 in Oregon. From bedside nursing in hospitals and long-term care facilities to the halls of research institutions, state legislatures, and Congress, and in our case, as volunteers for Project Access NOW, the depth and breadth of the nursing profession is meeting the expanding health care needs of American society.

Project Access NOW creates an easy and safe opportunity for volunteers to donate their invaluable skills. We salute the dozens of nurse practitioners and other nursing professionals who graciously and selflessly volunteer as members of the nearly 3,000-strong network of health care providers for Project Access NOW who care for the uninsured of our community - TODAY - when it is most needed.

We invite you to join us in thanking all nursing professionals.

Read below about one of our volunteer nurse practitioners who gladly donates her services to help ensure access to care and improve the health of our community.

As always, thank so much for your support.

Sincerely,

Executive Director

Thanking Lisa Roessel, FNP-BC
Lisa Roessel, FNP-BC

Nurse practitioner and Project Access    NOW volunteer, Lisa L. Roessel, FNP-BC, found herself working in pulmonary medicine by "happy accident" and she has never looked back. As the Pulmonary Hypertension Program Coordinator for the Legacy Pulmonary Hypertension Center, Lisa specializes in treating pulmonary hypertension, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and smoking cessation.

Lisa regularly sees several Project Access NOW patients in her practice. She says, "Working with Project Access NOW patients is great. They are reliable, show up on time for their appointments, and are very grateful for the care they receive. "

Lisa believes the work that Project Access NOW does is important and gives the following example to illustrate how access to health care at the right time can prevent serious complications down the road.

The testing necessary to diagnose COPD is very expensive. Often patients without insurance cannot afford to pay, so they do not get tested. If the condition is never diagnosed, or diagnosed when it is in an advanced state, it becomes more difficult - and expensive - to treat. Catching COPD early is critical and prevention of flare-ups and repeated infections is key to managing the disease. Left undiagnosed, patients often end up in the emergency department and their condition worsens with every repeat incident they experience.

Lisa says she is "Personally very thankful for Project Access NOW because patients are getting access to preventive care, which not only reduces costs, but, more importantly, gets them care and treatment when they really need it."

Nurse Leadership and Volunteerism with Project Access NOW

Project Access NOW is fortunate to have some amazing leadership from nurses.  We currently have two Nurse Practitioners on our Board of Directors.  Larlene Dunsmuir and Marie Napolitano are strong advocates for the low-income, uninsured.  They are great examples of nurse leaders actively engaged in a variety of efforts to help create a healthier community.

We also have three nurses who are among our very first Community Volunteers and still supporting us on a regular basis!  Kathi Misner, Vicki Cameron and Janet Williams have supported Project Access NOW with their clinical skills as well has their ability to help make events happen. Nurses are very versatile!

Thank you so much to all of the nurses we have the pleasure of working with!

Project Access NOW is in strategic partnership with United Way of the Columbia-Willamette.
