Sia Lindstrom
Board Chair
|
I'm fortunate to have been involved with Project Access NOW since its early days, and I continue to be moved by this organization whose mission, vision and collaborative spirit touches so many lives.
We've just entered our new fiscal year and after more than three years working successfully to connect low-income, uninsured people to needed healthcare, Project Access NOW remains a vital link in matching those willing to share their gifts with the rising number of people most in need.
I extend a grateful "thank you" to Mark Rosenberg, our outgoing Board Chair, for his leadership. Mark has an innate ability to foster positive, collaborative working relationships. His strong vision for this organization over the past two years has been inspiring to us all. And being a true leader, Mark has made it not about his vision, but about OUR vision. Thank you, Mark.
As our incoming Board Chair, I intend to keep that momentum going. We have a strong, cohesive board, stellar staff, and an amazing group of volunteers. That is a recipe for success. We will continue to build on this success as we connect people to the healthcare they need.
Over the next few years, the challenge will be in how we chart our course as Health Care Reform unfolds. Even under the new systems, there will be people without access to insurance for a variety of reasons. The need for Project Access will not go away, but we must be attentive and responsive as the health care environment changes around us. We will work proactively within those changes, and we will continue to be a voice for people without insurance who need access to health care, today and into the future. Thank you for your continued support of Project Access and its very important mission.

Monica M. felt ill and had so much pain after she ate that she could barely walk. A visit to the Essential Health Clinic revealed the need for further testing to determine the cause. Because Monica was unable to work and without insurance, the clinic referred her to Project Access NOW for help. Care coordinator Anna Sease arranged for tests at Tuality Hospital, which revealed that Monica was suffering from a post-operative peri-umbilical hernia, apparently a result of a prior Cesarean Section. Adding to her pain was the discovery of gall stones. Monica was connected with general surgeon Dr. Patrick O'Leary, who performed surgery to correct both of these conditions. |

Community volunteer highlight: Betty Marino
|
Betty Marino was looking for volunteer opportunities online when she came across an ad posted by Hands On Greater Portland on behalf of Project Access NOW. Project Access NOW was seeking a Durable Medical Equipment ("DME") Coordinator because a supplier had donated a large amount of new DME to Project Access NOW and and Project Access NOW needed someone to go through the dozens of boxes to inventory and catalog the equipment and then come up with a system of monitoring and distributing it. Betty, who had retired from a position as a warehouse foreman for a gas company seven years earlier, saw this as an opportunity to put her prior experience tracking and managing inventory to good use while making a difference in her community. Betty enjoys organizing and "making order out of chaos," and, since she began the project in late 2009, multiple donations of new and used equipment have come in and gone out to Project Access NOW clients who are seen and treated in our referring clinics and volunteer provider offices, all as a result of Betty's efforts. |

Board member profile: Larlene Dunsmuir
|
After more than two decades in nursing with Providence Health Systems, nurse practitioner Larlene Dunsmuir had begun to look for additional ways to remain connected with the reason she originally chose to enter the healthcare profession - to make a positive difference in the health of others.
Larlene has had a leadership role for many years with the Nurse Practitioners of Oregon ("NPO") and had helped them develop a Student Nurse Practitioner Scholarship. The first scholarship recipient is a Project Access NOW Volunteer and she introduced Larlene to the wonderful work that Project Access NOW does. Later that same day, Larlene had dinner with Frank and Cathy Betzer and Frank mentioned that he was a board member for Project Access NOW and again Larlene heard about the great work that this organization was doing. |

Thanking Dr. Patrick O'Leary and Hillsboro Surgical Associates
|
 | | Patrick O'Leary, MD |
When Dr. Patrick O'Leary joined Tuality hospital three years ago as a general surgeon, he began seeing patients referred by Project Access NOW right away. Through his practice, Hillsboro Surgical Associates, Dr. O'Leary performs a wide variety of surgeries, including advanced laparoscopy and vascular surgery.
Because he believes that everyone deserves access to healthcare, he is happy to do what he can to help the uninsured. The process of working with Project Access NOW has been seamless. Often, he does not even notice when a patient has been referred by Project Access NOW. The structure that exists within Project Access NOW also makes it easy to refer a patient to see a different specialist when needed.
Dr. O'Leary firmly believes that programs like Project Access NOW are vital to providing necessary healthcare to the entire community. He says he is happy to volunteer his time and services and he encourages other healthcare providers to consider doing the same.
"It's an opportunity to care for patients that you might not otherwise see in your practice."

Staff profile: Debbie Rieke
|
Debbie Rieke was volunteering for Northwest Portland Ministries on a planned hiatus from paid work to focus on personal goals and service to the community when she learned of Project Access NOW. While waiting for a meeting to begin, she picked up one of Project Access NOW's brochures on display in the lobby that was shared by both organizations. After reading about Project Access NOW's mission and vision, she instantly felt the need to become involved. She reached out to program coordinator, Lorraine Williams, and began volunteering shortly thereafter. |
