Greetings!
So many different people care about Project Access NOW and our work for so many different reasons. It was fun to see that nice mix of individuals come together in the same place to celebrate Project Access NOW. On September 14th, more than 70 people joined us at our 2nd Open House, enjoying burgers, salmon, wine and other goodies on the back patio of our new headquarters in northwest Portland. Representatives from hospitals, community organizations, the State of Oregon as well as volunteer providers, community volunteers, board members, family members, and others who recognize the importance of healthcare access demonstrated the broad reach Project Access NOW has in the healthcare community.

A huge word of appreciation goes to
  • Board member Kari Stanley and Legacy Health for the in-kind donation of space for our growing office.
  • Brenda Vogeltanz and Gourmet Productions for donating 100 fabulous cookies - Community Volunteer Kathi Misner for securing the cookies.
  • VX Vineyard which donated wine and gave 15% of wine sales to Project Access NOW, raising a total of $110. Thank you everyone who bought wine!
A special thank you goes to these amazing volunteers who made the Open House happen: Kathi Misner, Vicki Cameron, Debbie Rieke, and Janet Williams.  We're very thankful for these women's time and effort. These four super-volunteers are in every week, doing a lot of things, from chart reviews (three are nurses) to volunteer scheduling to events. They also made last April's "Bridges to Healthcare" event happen. We're already looking forward to the next event on April 7th, 2010. We hope you can join us!

Sincerely,

Linda Nilsen-Solares
Executive Director

Ray's story
A year ago, Ray K. called Project Access NOW asking for help with a lung issue. Staff referred him to the Rosewood Family Health Center, where he was screened and enrolled in the program.

Tests at OHSU showed he had cancer. In a quick succession of procedures, oncologist Dr. Christopher Ryan drained Ray's lung and urologic surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Larochelle removed his kidney.

"I got medical attention I wouldn't have got otherwise," Ray said. "I probably wouldn't be alive today."
Partner highlight: Essential Health Clinic
Sue NealBased in Hillsboro, Oregon, the Essential Health Clinic coordinates Project Access Washington County. Between April 2008 and August 2010, Project Access Washington County enrolled 1,973 patients.

Founding Board member Sue Neal, Director of Women Services at Tuality Healthcare, where she's worked for 24 years, outlined the Essential Health Clinic's history in five milestones:
  • In 1999, some 50 community members, from 10 different organizations as well as concerned individuals, decided to create a free clinic for the uninsured in the County.
  • In 2001, following a period of planning, a volunteer-operated organization Essential Health Clinic started seeing their first patients one evening per week.
  • In 2006, the Essential Health Clinic opened a one-night-per-week clinic in Tigard.
  • In 2008, Project Access Washington County launched under the Clinic's roof with a dedicated coordinator, who joined three other Clinic staff.
  • In 2010, owing to funding challenges, the Essential Health Clinic suspended its Tigard service, downsized staff, including the executive director position, and curbed referrals from outside providers. The organization is, once again, run by its board.

Thanking Dr. Sean Green
Neurologist Sean Green, MD, has developed a unique niche: he's a medical examiner focusing on occupational claims. Though the specialty has allowed him a more relaxed lifestyle than his previous private practice, Dr. Green said he"really missed seeing patients and was looking for volunteer activity."

That's when his friend Janet Hamilton, current Project Access NOW Director of Operations then board member, told him about the organization; we needed someone to provide neurology case reviews.

"It was perfect for me," Dr. Green said. "The need was clear, and I could fill it."

Project Access NOW "ahead of the game" in outcomes evaluation
Our first annual report, which we'll bring you in early October, will contain results from the outcomes evaluation study conducted by Health Policy Research Northwest ("HPRN"). We contracted with the Eugene-based nonprofit to assess the measurable impact of our work.

According to Erin Owens, HPRN's Executive Director, "Project Access NOW is ahead of the game in incorporating evaluation into their core values. It helps in demonstrating the sustainability of the program, as without evidence they cannot show their stakeholders what their Return on Investment is."

HPRN researchers will share the study's results at the upcoming American Public Health Association Conference in Denver, Colo.

Project Access NOW is in strategic partnership with United Way of the Columbia-Willamette.
