Broadening the Project Access NOW
circle
|
We started the new year with a lot of
excitement:
- In late December, we had served our 3,000th patient since March 2008 (see the summary of 2009 in Quick Data below)
- The Meyer Memorial Trust awarded us $115,000 over two years to expand our care coordination services (see the article below).
- On January 8th, ABC-KATU2 News ran a short segment on us.
- On January 10th, Entercom
Radio's local public affairs show Metroscope ran a lengthy interview
with me.
- Last week, our wine tasting fundraiser
at the Square Deal Wine Company attracted more than 65 folks (select photos from the event are available here and you can view and purchase all the photos here). What a great way to kick off the new year!
As we enroll more and more patients every month, we'll need all the outreach possible to expand our resources this year. Our capacity to meet the need depends on our ability to
work collaboratively. Though the challenges ahead will be greater than ever, we're confident in confronting them and creating positive change in the community.
Our most important resource are volunteers. Physician volunteers like Dr. Friedman (profiled in this newsletter, below), help us connect people to the healthcare they need. The
more we can involve people in sharing the care, the more we can do for the vulnerable in our community. Community volunteers like Patrick, a former patient (read his profile below), are our organization's lifeblood.
We'll also be using media and other marketing outreach to raise awareness in the community and to connect with people who really care about our work. We aim to expand our
fledgling fundraising program and increase the number of our individual supporters.
Please give us a call or email us to see how you can contribute to expanding access to healthcare. Or, forward this email to your friends and colleagues with the handy Forward
email link at the bottom, to let them know about our efforts. We appreciate everything you do.
Here's to a generous and prosperous 2010!

Volunteer highlight: Patrick R.
|
Meet the self-proclaimed mascot of Project Access NOW: Patrick R. is the first Project Access NOW patient to volunteer for our organization.
You may remember Patrick from our April 2009 patient story. Right after the interview, Patrick called our office to offer his time and energy. His thinking was straightforward. "It's a volunteer program. Doctors volunteer their time. It was a natural motive to give back and volunteer mine."
Pharmacy Resource Specialist Margaret Lamb confirmed the uniqueness of Patrick's effort. "Many patients have called to say thank you and to say they'll pay us back when they can. Patrick is the first patient who said, let me pay back by volunteering."

Thanking Dr. Friedman and Westside Neurology
|
Neurologist Daniel Friedman joined Project Access NOW after years of seeing uninsured patients with limited access to diagnostic testing and medications, which made evaluating and treating them much more difficult.
"Because Project Access NOW allows patients to have diagnostic testing and medications," Dr. Friedman said, "my job is easier and I am able to provide patients with the care that they need. It saves time, energy and frustration for both the patient and myself."

Board member profile: Alan Melnick, MD, MPH, CPH
|
Dr. Alan Melnick has made community health his business. As health officer for Clark and three other counties in southwest Washington, one of his priorities is helping people access health care.
As a professional, he contributes his experience and expertise in medicine and public health to a number of nonprofit boards, including Free Clinic of Southwest Washington and Project Access NOW, whose missions he finds to be aligned and mutually supportive.
"I'm working to ensure everyone enjoys comprehensive access to quality care," Dr. Melnick said. "Project Access NOW helps us get there."

Meyer Memorial Trust helps expand care coordination
|
We look to technology as one of the
ways to improve efficiencies. We are, therefore, proud and honored to
announce that the Meyer Memorial Trust has awarded Project Access NOW
a grant of $115,000 over 2 years for the expansion of care
coordination services.
In particular, the grant will help develop and install case management software. The new database will allow us to serve more patients better and without adding staff. We'll also be able to increase detail and frequency of reports, establish our capacity to share data with other organizations, and allow application to other social service programs.
We look forward to reporting on our
progress!

Support Project Access NOW and work on Mastering Effectiveness |
We have really enjoyed the group of volunteers that has been meeting to study the "Mastering Effectiveness" curriculum provided to us as a donation by LionHeart Consulting. The Mastering Effectiveness curriculum has been designed and packaged for supported self study. LionHeart continues its offer to give Project Access NOW 51% of sales of the Mastering Effectiveness curriculum sold through our website. This month we have a taste of the LionHeart perspective on The Business of Truth Telling for you to consider.
