Project Access NOW eNewsletter: December 2009

A holiday message from the Chair |
It
has been a pleasure and a privilege serving as board chair of Project
Access NOW during 2009. It has been a year of great growth: the
number of patients enrolled per month has doubled, we now have more
than 2400 committed physician volunteers and have been able to
connect more than 2,500 people to more than $9,000,000 of donated
healthcare services.
The
energy and abilities and dedication of our fantastic staff (Linda,
Lorraine, Margaret, and Elgin), our volunteers, our board members,
and our community partners have combined to move Project Access NOW
forward and allowed the uninsured in our communities to receive
cost-effective healthcare.
Our
success has been gratifying, but creates next year's challenges.
More patients needing care coordination, more physician capacity to
develop, more funds that need to be raised... We have a wonderful
core group and welcome each additional person's participation
(direct service, volunteering, donating etc.) during the coming year.
I want to thank everyone for their efforts and I look forward to 2010
as the year of expanding healthcare access for all.
Sincerely,
Mark
Rosenberg, MD
Chair,
Board of Directors, Project Access NOW

Jane D. lived in fear of cervical
cancer for two years. Her post-menopausal bleeding had her constantly
worried about what was going on with her body and whether it meant
something more grave.
She went to the Rosewood Family Health
Center, where she received help, but with no insurance she had to
delay the surgical procedure she knew she needed. "I kept putting
the surgery off because I knew I couldn't afford it," she said.

Thanking Winnie Kiser and Surgical Associates
|
Though Winnie Kiser's official title at Surgical Associates
is Office Coordinator and Surgery Scheduler, she describes herself as
"Patient Advocate". She knows that patients who come in don't want to
be there, so she aims to make their stay as pleasant and effortless as
possible. She said, "I treat patients the way I'd like to be treated."
Winnie also recognizes that Project Access NOW patients wouldn't be able to get the help they need without the program. "Any one of us could be in that seat so easily," Winnie said. "If it happened to me, I would like to know something like Project Access NOW is there for me. So if Tara Foley [at Project Access Multnomah County] needs me to go above and beyond, I'll do it because it needs to be done."

Board member profile: Mark Rosenberg
|
For Dr. Mark Rosenberg, Project Access NOW
is a culmination of 30 years of working to improve healthcare for the
underserved. As Director of the Internal Medicine Residency at Providence Portland Medical Center,
he's been training residents to value caring for all members of the
community. As a practicing internist, his practice has focused on the
underserved, and his volunteer work at Wallace Medical Concern has reinforced the need. As Project Access NOW board chair, he extends that vision into fostering collaboration among those serving the uninsured.
It
was Tracy Gratto's presentation about safety net clinics and other
community initiatives that led Mark to get involved in Project Access NOW. "The synergy and efficiency that Project Access NOW fosters seemed critical to support."
