Did you know all
new steel is made with recycled steel?
Since the early 1970's, the North American steel industry has invested over $60 billion in becoming a more sustainable industry.
The industry annually recycles millions of tons of steel scrap from
recycled cans, automobiles, appliances, construction and other steel
products. This scrap is remelted to produce new steel. This means that
all new steel is made with recycled steel.
The Steel Recycling Institute (SRI), a unit of the American Iron and Steel Institute, is an industry association that promotes and
sustains the recycling of all steel products. The SRI educates the solid waste industry,
government, business and ultimately the consumer about the benefits of
steel's infinite recycling cycle.
The North American steel industry is
committed to principles of
sustainable development in manufacturing innovative products that
answer society's needs. This commitment is aimed at improving the
quality of life for everyone now and for generations to come.
This month's Green Scene will focus on the history of the green movement and steel's role in that movement particularly related
to the building industry and the USGBC LEED system.
