Reaching Out to the LGBT Community

Greetings friends!

As the year winds down, I want to thank each one of your for your support over the past year.  There has been a lot of news regarding the LGBT community, including some progress and some setbacks.  But make no mistake; we know where we are heading and we know what side of history we will be on.  I'm proud to be in this movement with you.

I have used this issue to highlight some fun and inspiring events coming up during the holiday season.  If you belong to an organization that addresses the needs of the LGBT community, please forward any information to me and I will be happy to include it in upcoming newsletters.

I hope you have a safe and prosperous holiday season!

Your friend,
Lorie

Speaking of inspiring, I wanted to share two very impassioned speeches made recently by two of my friends addressing the recent LGBT suicides.  In case you've been under a rock and haven't heard or seen these statements, then please take some time to check them out:

*The GLBT Leadership Education & Advocacy Program ("LEAP") was created by the North Texas GLBT Chamber of Commerce to support youth and nurture the development of leaders in the GLBT community. LEAP awards educational scholarships to undergraduate GLBT and Allied students, who exhibit leadership potential, demonstrate strong academic abilities, and who are actively involved in school and community organizations.  In addition to supporting higher education for GLBT/A youth, LEAP serves as a resource for leadership development, business mentoring and internships in and for the GLBT community.  Contributions made to LEAP are tax deductible.

UPDATE ON DADT

On Sept. 9, U.S. District Judge Virginia Phillips ruled "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" unconstitutional. Phillips declined to issue a stay and the military agreed to abide by Phillips' ruling, allowing openly gay individuals to enlist. The Obama Administration appealed and asked the 9th Circuit Court and for a stay. The Court agreed, but noted the case could be moot by the time they hear the appeal. Obama expects a December 1 recommendation by the Pentagon on how to implement DADT repeal. Since Congress has shown a change of heart in addressing DADT, the issue now seems reliant upon action by the courts. On Nov. 5, plaintiffs in the DADT case asked the Supreme Court to block the 9th Circuit's stay until the case had been decided on appeal, which was denied.

According to sources, the Pentagon group researching the issue has concluded that there is minimal risk to lifting the ban: Click here for more information!
