It's Time to Show Some PRIDE!

Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade - September 19 at 2:00 p.m.

You may have wondered why Dallas' Pride Parade does not coincide with Pride events around the rest of the country. Most Pride Parades take place around the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Riots. But, when Judge Jerry Buchmeyer ruled the Texas "Sodomy Law" unconstitutional in 1983, Dallas' Parade organizers decided to move Pride events to correspond with the ruling. That legal decision governs our Pride schedule. In 1992, the Dallas Tavern Guild named the Freedom Parade after its long-time president and director, Alan Ross. Mr. Ross spearheaded, organized, and championed every aspect of GLBT rights and community in Dallas. Therefore, our Pride Parade honors his tireless activism by incorporating his name.

Texas Gay Divorce Case

In October 2009, a Dallas District Judge cleared the way for a legally married gay couple to seek a divorce in Texas.  This opinion was quickly appealed by Texas Atty. Gen. Greg Abbott, and in late August the 5th District Court of Appeals ruled that the two men, married in Massachusetts, will be unable to divorce in Texas. The Appeals Court rejected arguments that Texas marriage laws are unconstitutional or violate the Constitution's equal protection clause. No decision has been made on whether to appeal the case to the Texas Supreme Court.
After the initial ruling granting access to divorce, Lorie appeared on FOX-4 News to be interviewed about the case.

Update on Prop 8 Case

Our community scored a major victory when a federal judge ruled that California's Proposition 8 violates the Federal Constitution.  This matter has the potential of reaching the Supreme Court, but there are some technical legal issues standing in the way.  The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals must now decide if supporters of Prop 8 have legal grounds to appeal the decision, a ruling is expected in December. Meanwhile, just last Thursday, September 2, a Sacramento Appeals Court refused to force California (through Attorney General Brown or Governor Schwarzenegger) to defend Proposition 8.
