Greetings!
Come on out and play! Spring is springing and there are dogs at the shelter that have cabin fever too. They would love for you to come out and "play". Take them for a run (or walk), throw the ball for them in our backyard, nothing says "I have had a good day" like throwing a slobbered on ball for an excited pup. There are so many amazing things happening at HELP right now, we are not sure we can get them all in one newsletter! Lots of upcoming exciting (some totally new to us) events just around the corner. You may or may not know that we came SO close to winning the $250K grant from pepsi refresh, but close didnt cut it but wow, for a shelter in Belton, MO competing against orgs with a national following to end up #6 of 300 and only 4 spots out of the winning 2 spots! AMAZING! That was all of your doing. All of you awesome people taking a couple minutes a day to try and help out our animals, it makes my eyes well with tears thinking about it. Thank you so much for trying, we all gave it all we had, must mean something better is coming! What is it going to be? So, come on, shake off those winter blues, let your hair blow in the wind and sun warm your cheeks while making a homeless dog's day! They are waiting! We are in desperate need of scoopable cat litter if anyone could help out. We recently lost our 10 year donator of this, its really rough on us right now. Thanks for any help you could provide! Sincerely, Cyndi Dill, Shelter Director |
| | HD recouperating in his foster home after surgery on both his back legs. |
During the past couple months, we went through some pretty tough rescues. One being HD who was found with 2 broken legs that had to be pinned, he is recovering nicely in a foster home.
Another one being Princess, she was a
| | Princess right after rescuing her from the KCMO "shelter". |
12 yr old cat given up by her owners to a high kill shelter. Her heart was broken and she had given up. She then became horribly ill before anyone noticed at that shelter. We heard about this poor cat, we rescued her and desperately tried to save her but she was too far neglected by the time we got to her. There are some very questionable things going on at Halfway Home Pet Adoptions, the Animal Control for Kansas City. If you are a resident of Kansas city, you need to start asking questions to your city representative, don't take our word for it, go find out and get involved, there are many animals that need your voice! If you would like more details, you can read about her in our blog, click the link at the bottom of this email.
We are still paying the bills incurred for both of these precious babies if you can help at all, its greatly appreciated!

Our 4th annual formal fundraiser is coming soon. This year's theme is "A Night of Childhood Memories", with the date set at 09/10/11, a fun date to remember, we thought celebrating our childhood memories would be fun. And even more fun is everyone has different decades of childhood. We want everyone to have a fun night of childhood memories while making new memories with our adult friends all while helping the homeless animals in our care. Chief Meteorologist Bryan Busby will again emcee our event, he is a hoot and will great entertainment.
The menu is your choice of Chicken Basil Creme, KC Strip or Veggie Lasagna, started off with tomato basil soup and salad, julienne vegetable sauté and roasted red skin potatoes finished off with Chocolate cake. If you have never had thier food, oh my goodness, yum! Many many items in our silent auction and live auction items have already started coming in including a 3 days of lodging at Big Cedar Lodge, a gorgeous handmade quilt and more coming. Happy Tails!
Here's some information about Snapdragon and our other kitty, Putty. We made sure to attach pictures so you could see how cute our kitties look together. We will be sure to keep saving cans for the shelter and stop by whenever we are in Belton. We will come in and tell how the cats are doing and we will look at the other cats and pet and play around with them. Thanks for all you do for a lot of animals! See you soon! Snapdragon's person, Allison

I'm Carrie's husband, Joe, and I wanted to give you an update on Dr. Kitty (formerly McGee). He is doing really well in our house. Our 1-year old Australian Sheppard finally has a good pal to hang and play around with, along with our boys Miles (5) and Zen (12). His respiratory issues seem to subside when he takes his medicine. But, flare ups do happen and he will begin his sneezing and heavy breathing. He's a cool cat with some real unique qualities about him. We love him and wanted to pass along.
Take care, Joe |
Volunteer Opportunities
We are always in dire need of volunteers at the shelter. Please consider donating your time to help the animals out. Below is an incomplete list of volunteer opportunities available:
Fundraising - we are looking for help with all fundraisers. Help with organizing the events and the day of the event. (We have a fundraising meeting at the shetlter at 7pm the first Tuesday of each month, please join us!).
Publicity for our fundraisers - writing press releases and getting them to media contacts. Also hanging flyers in public places.
Collect and donate items from our wishlist.
Cat caregivers - not only scooping and cleaning up after them, but brushing and trimming nails.
Dog walkers and caregivers - Taking the dogs for walks and cleaning their runs.
PetSmart adoptions - We are in need of people to take and sit with our dogs at the Belton PetSmart on Saturdays from 12-3pm. This helps our dogs to get exposure and increases their adoption chances.
Foster homes for baby kittens or those needing rehab time
Group fundraiser - Do you have a group that wants to volunteer/ There are several area restaurants that will host a fundraiser for us at their establishment. We just need people to show up to serve guests and beg tips, doesnt that sound like fun? Use this area to provide your contacts information about your organization.
