The 3/50 Project: Invest in Downtown
With most parts of the country feeling the effects of the
recessions, many downtowns are rallying behind the "buy local" movement. While not a new concept, the economic
downturn has made this message ring loud and clear. Independently owned stores and restaurants,
downtown business associations and chamber's of commerce have, with varying
degrees of success, touted the benefits of spending your money locally. This movement was fueled by the advent and
proliferation of "big box" and chain stores in the 1990's and early 2000's.
The "buy local" premise is simple and intuitive: folks
should spend their disposable income at businesses that are locally owned and
operated, like those found downtown, which in turn greatly benefits the
community more than shopping and dining at national chains. Patronizing local downtown businesses also
encourages in-fill redevelopment rather than sprawl; reduces driving miles,
pollution emissions, and congestion; and provides a more personalized rewarding
shopping or dining experience.
A relatively new version of the "buy local"
concept is the 3/50 Project founded by Cinda Baxter of Minneapolis, Minnesota. read more

Downtown Happenings September 09'
There
are always new things happening in the Downtown Bozeman area. Whether it's a
new business opening, an existing business remodeling or just a simple update,
we want to keep you informed about what going on in downtown.
First, another new business has opened its doors
in the new parking garage spaces along Mendenhall. Blue Sky Healing Arts Center formerly of four
corners, and serving the Gallatin Valley for over twenty years, is now at 14
East Mendenhall. It is a beautifully
designed space and Owner, Thomas Sexton Licensed Acupuncturist, has over thirty
years experience in the healing arts, and an extensive background in Oriental Medicine,
Acupuncture and Bio-energetic Medicine from Europe. read more
Next, there's been some buzz around town about
the wonderful food currently being served at the Bacchus Pub. They only began serving their extensive lunch
and dinner menu a little over 3 weeks ago but the word is quickly getting
out! They are featuring menu selections
varying from traditional "old world" pub fare like Welsh Rarebit and Sheppard's
pie to classic Americana selections like pizza and salads to local favorites
like pasty's. Items like the braised ham
shank (shown in the image included) and Italian beef sandwich are also quickly
becoming local favorites. read more
Finally, Sweetgrass Natural
Medicine and Green Midwife have set up shop in Downtown Bozeman above John
Bozeman's Bistro at 123 West Main
Street. I
got the chance to sit and chat with Naturopathic Physician Dr. Holcomb Johnston
N.D. regarding her new business Sweetgrass Medicine and she's is very excited
to be in downtown Bozeman doing what she loves, which according to her is
"using the healing power of nature," to treat almost any chronic illness while
enjoying the amazing ecosystem and outdoor recreation this area has to
offer. read more
