SUMMER IN REVIEW

Hope you had a great summer and are surviving the heat. We wanted to bring you up to date with Radiant Hands. Over the summer Pat attended a forum at the Nonprofit Center of North Central Florida. Directors of local non-profit organizations were able to discuss ways to work together for the benefit of the community and the non-profits. It was attended by 10 different organizations including Catholic Charities, Peaceful Paths, Ronald Macdonald House, Gainesville Choir, Girls Place and others. It was a diverse group including very small charities (us) and local non-profits including Haven Hospice.

The purpose was to learn from each other, discover services provided by other non-profits and come up with ways to share limited resources which was quite beneficial.

Assistance Program:

Radiant Hands Inc. has decided to work more closely with area service organizations to target those who are struggling with their situation. We believe referrals from established organizations and service centers will help reduce the chance of false applications. We are working on an application that requires a signature and phone number of the person referring the applicant. We feel this personal knowledge of the situation will be in the best interest of Radiant Hands as we try to make sure that donations are put to the best use.

Radiant Works Scholarship:

We are looking forward to the 2011-2012 academic year and the expansion of the Radiant Works Scholarship. This past year, we had 9 applications and have approved 5. We anticipate the number of applications to increase this year, and hope to remain on schedule of granting two scholarships each month to both Alachua and Marion County students. In addition to working with the school board and the GED exam, pending funding, we anticipate expanding the scholarship program to include Nursing Assistant and Certified Nersing Assistant programs.

The keynote address will be given by Dr. Elizabeth Ross. The title of her talk will be "Dialogue in Art and Architecture of Jerusalem".

Elizabeth Ross is Assistant Professor of Art History at UF. She received her B.A. in History of Art from Yale University and her A.M. and Ph.D. in History of Art and Architecture from Harvard University. She has held fellowships from the Mellon Foundation, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and Harvard University. Before coming to UF, Dr. Ross taught courses at the Rhode Island School of Design and in the Master's Program at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. Her work focuses on 15th and 16th-century art in Europe, including European reception of the Middle East, history of travel and cartography, the art of prints, and history of the book. She has just completed a book on the first illustrated printed travelogue, an account of a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 1482.

 MARK YOUR CALENDARS

We have been accepted to participate in the 30th Annual Downtown Festival and Art Show on November 12 & 13. Please plan to visit us at the booth, more details coming. We are now searching for artists who can join our henna painting. Lots of time to make plans for the day, come for a couple of hours or the afternoon. We appreciate all help offered.

PAYROLL DEDUCTION

Radiant Hands has once again been accepted by United Way to be involved in their Payroll Deduction Plan. If you work for UF, Shands, the city or any employer who permits payroll deduction, you can donate easily to Radiant Hands each pay period simply by writing in our name on forms supplied by the payroll department. Even if you don't see our name or number (UF employees look for # 3030 during enrollment time), you can write in Radiant Hands and initiate a deduction. For the price of a cup of coffee a week, you can make a difference in someone's life. It's easy and secure and best of all you don't have to remember to write the check.
