"People are just about as happy as they make up their minds to be. " *Abraham Lincoln
"Most true happiness comes from one's inner life, from the disposition of the mind and soul. Admittedly, a good inner life is hard to achieve, especially in these trying times. It takes reflection and contemplation and self-discipline." *W. L. Shirer

Greetings!
Last time I wrote about how we are completing projects, reaping what we have sown, and getting ready for winter. What did you discover you are finishing, or harvesting, this autumn?
This edition I would like to share ideas to help you prepare for healthy holidays, and what you can do about the stress, and the over-indulgences. Are you making poor nutritional choices (overeating, consuming nutrient deficient foods, or too much sugar)? Are you 'too busy' to continue your exercise regime? Are you saying yes to everything but yourself? Are you trying to be the perfect host (or ...)? Are you spending more than you planned or budgeted (Are you asking 'Budget-what's that!?'? Have you considered how this is affecting your health and wellbeing??
I invite you to explore how you can be healthy this season. You do have a choice! Is it allowing yourself more down time? Is it finding ways to move your body and maintain your fitness routine? This is the time of year to start winding down, not adding stress and dis-ease. In this issue, we will explore what you can do to be ready for a more healthy holiday season!
What do the holidays mean to you? Understanding values important to you (maybe spending time with family, maybe relaxing with friends, maybe volunteer time to someone in need) and committing to making sure you do these things. Commit to taking care of yourself, follow what's important to you, and you will find yourself happier and healthier this winter!
Be well!

Healthy Holidays
Holiday Season is a stressful time. Many people spend more money than they have, eat much more than their bodies need, stress about all the little things that they are supposed to be being and doing. Many are stretched thin with so many demands on their time and energy. For many the holidays bring on stress and depression. Over-indulgences lead to debt and regretful actions, and all the feelings and 'stuff' that we didn't want to deal with at this time goes flowing over.
It is possible to enjoy the holidays without sacrificing your health and wellness. You have a choice in how you react and how you spend the holidays. And this year, you can create a new pattern, a new set of actions or ways of being, that have you feeling happier and healthier.
Below I outlined a list of tips for being happier and healthier during the holidays. A good place to start is to take steps to manage stress, or anything that leads to you discarding your power and control over yourself. Most importantly, there is no reason why you have to discard the good habits you already have. Limit over-indulgences and keep moving your body! You don't have to be part of the status quo of gaining 5lbs. during the holidays! What will keep you healthy is if you accept things won't be perfect, you don't have control of everything (especially other people) and to stick to a budget!
By chosing to take care of yourself by sleeping more, taking down time when needed, continuing with your exercise and activities, limiting what you are eating (especially the fats and sugars), you are in control of your health.
Need help moving toward a healthier you?? Please ask! Get the support you need to make these changes part of your life. I look forward to hearing from you!
Be well, Joelle

| Tips for a Happy, Healthy Holiday season- |
Tips to start the season off right - · Don't abandon existing healthy habits! · Limit portions & avoid mindless eating. Eat nutrient dense foods, savor each bite, & avoid excessive sugar · Get exercise! Exercise dramatically affects well being and stress levels. Schedule your exercise and stick with it! · Take a break & make some time for yourself- 10 minutes alone, time in nature, focus on your breath, mental vacation
· Get enough sleep. This affect your weight lost, your energy, your tolerance to stress! · Stick to a budget-Eliminate post holiday stress of over extending yourself, buy from the heart, not from a 'should'! · Learn to say no- To extra helpings, excess demands, attending everything; you will avoid resentment and overwhelm · Plan ahead- Menus, events, meal prep; Expect travel delays · Set differences aside- accept others as they are, set aside grievances, understand others may be stressed also! · Forget about perfection! Be realistic with your expectations, your time, and your energy. Expect things will not go perfectly, release control! | |
