TRAINING, TRAINING, AND MORE TRAINING PLEASE!
Happy New Year to all and welcome to our new educators! We appreciate your willingness to share your expertise, knowledge, and experience with others in the early care and education field. The CECPD training team's goal is to deliver expert professional development to child care professionals across the state.

Although there are numerous trainings taking place across Oklahoma, CECPD receives several calls daily from child care providers asking for more! Because of the high demand for professional development, please consider scheduling additional classes. The more the merrier! The CECPD staff is hard at work updating our website making it easier for providers to locate available trainings. In addition, a new training calendar has just been added to the site and a regional map will be added soon.
If you would like to schedule additional classes and help fill the training calendar for this year, please contact Leanne Condray at 405-793-3412 or email her at lcondray@ou.edu. We appreciate your help.

Observations from the field....
For the past several months, CECPD has been conducting observations of your training sessions. As of December 31, 2009, 16 observations had been completed. Congratulations on the many excellent sessions. A few of the "kudos" include: comfortable and safe learning environments for the participants, consistently relating the class concepts to practical and useful workplace examples (practical application), and encouraging interactive participation. All of these strategies ensure learning takes place and is retained by the students.
There were also some areas of improvement that need to be addressed. Please read the following list carefully and ensure that each item is consistently practiced in your sessions:
-
Establish ground rules: Be sure to take a few minutes before each session to discuss your procedures regarding break times, respectful communication, cell phone usage, and confidentiality.
-
Ask several open-ended questions: Asking questions that require more than a "Yes" or "No" response helps participants think a little deeper on the topic. These types of questions can also help participants learn new ways to apply the information they receive.
-
Incorporate a variety of learning activities: Participants learn in a variety of ways. Be sure to include large group activities, small group activities, and individual activities in your training to meet these needs.
-
Review key concepts: At the end of the training session, review the main points covered so that the participants will be reminded of what topics they were introduced to during the session.
-
Be on time and begin class precisely as scheduled: Beginning a class on time as scheduled shows that you are a professional, and you respect the time the participants are investing in your session.
-
Include ice-breakers: Participants sometimes need to be prepared to learn. Using ice breakers can put learners in the right mind-set for the session. Ice breakers can also be used throughout the session to transition from one topic to another.
-
Include visual aids: Visual aids are a great tool to use to reinforce the topics being covered. A flip chart or dry erase board can be used to record ideas the participants had on a certain topic or list the important points of a subject. When using flip charts, only use for groups of 25 or less, use bright colors, leave the bottom 1/3 of the page blank, and add visual interest for the participants.
To reach our goal of providing expert training, it is critical to consistently provide high quality sessions. The preceding list reminds us to continually seek to improve our learning.

ICE BREAKERS
No Talking Birthday Game
Divide the group into two teams and have them form a line in order of their birthdays (January 1st on one end and December 31st on the other...birth year is not included). The catch is that they need to do this without talking or writing. The first team to get their line in order wins, but they have to have their order correct!
WHERE ARE YOU?
Pick a year or a date before the training begins (e.g. December-1995, Fall-2002, etc.). Give each person a chance to tell what they were doing on that date.
Circle in Common
Give everyone a piece of paper with a circle on it. In the circle have them write one thing they think is unique to them or something few people know about them. After they have written something down, have everyone walk around the room and look at what others have written. If they have that in common with the other person then they write down their name on the inside of the circle, if they don't then they write their name on the outside of the circle. It's fun to see what people have in common with one another.
