About the scholarship:
The Charles and Connie Meng Scholarship Program was
established by PVF in 1998 to provide $500 scholarship grants to Alameda County
community college students pursuing vocational and trade careers such as
cosmetologists, cooks, bank tellers, pharmacy technicians, dental assistants,
paralegals, apparel designers and merchandisers, x-ray technicians, automotive
technicians, carpenters and more.
In the 10 years since the program was established, PVF has
worked closely with high school and community college faculty and financial aid
officers to identify mature, motivated and career focus young people for whom
this financial assistance would make a difference.
Here's what some past scholars have said about how this program has impacted their lives:
"I received financial assistance in spring 2008 from the
Charles and Connie Meng scholarship program.
This program made it possible for me to go to school. I enrolled in the cosmetology program and the
scholarship paid for the majority of supplies required." -Cosmetology Student, Laney College,
Oakland
"I want to show my children that in spite of our struggle we
can and will still succeed if we do what it takes. I am working to have more structure, so that
I can do work study or part-time work to begin my journey to self sufficiency. I know that this scholarship is truly needed
and would help out a lot for my career opportunities." -Nursing Student, Laney College,
Oakland
"It is with heartfelt thanks and appreciation that I write
these words. As a foster youth it has
been a long, hard fought battle to 'find' myself in the world and to articulate
a career path. I assure you your support in my life will
have continued positive affect on many lives. In addition to mastering my trade as a
carpenter it is my goal to apprentice/mentor young people who share the
background that I have thus far survived, meaning people from dysfunctional
single/no parent homes and at-risk lifestyles.
A wise man once told me 'to save the world you must save yourself that
you may save others.' Again I thank you all for your support." -Carpentry
Student, Laney College,
Oakland.
