Customizing Giving for Donors

A Day in the Life of Bill Somerville

San Francisco Chronicle writer Meredith May spent a day with PVF Director Bill Somerville, covered in her November 28, 2008 article, "He Invests in People."

Readers sent heartfelt accolades for PVF's responsive grantmaking, a sampling of this fan mail is in the right-hand panel.

The article also triggered an avalanche of requests from grant-seekers.  There were some significant and worthy projects in need of funding - inspired initiatives for working with youth violence, training urban teachers, job creation in East Palo Alto, creating a youth conservation corps in a depressed city, and more.

But without new donors taking up the challenge, PVF will not be able to support such efforts.

We need your help to invest in the outstanding nonprofit workers we meet, and who find us!

"Congratulations - I found the SF Chronicle article on PVF and getting funds to organizations in need very inspiring.  If you can cut to the chase, there are more resources for grantmaking, plus you're not asking those in need to jump unnecessar-ily through 'hoops and loops.'" Patricia Mattox, Administrator, Walter and Elise Haas Fund

"Reading about your philosophy and philanthropy will hopefully provide some inspiration during tougher economic times.  Thank you for the amazing work you do." Michelle Augenstein, Executive Director, Wardrobe for Opportunity

"Loved the story - you're a beacon, Bill."  Sandy Close, Executive Director, New American Media

"I was happy to read the wonderful article in Sunday's paper about your Foundation but more pleased to "meet" the person behind the Foundation.  Your philosophy of funding is so sincere. Our classes have benefited from your immediate response grants. As the Principal, I comb all resources to enrich student engagement for success and yours is the best!"    Jeanette MacDonald, Principal, Franklin Elementary School, Oakland, CA.
