Greetings!

He was so tiny... a mere six and a half pounds, but at 21 inches he was the skinniest baby I'd ever seen. Eyes like coal. Skin wrinkled. Bundled up like a mummy. Though hours before he'd been wailing like a banshee, by the time he was placed in my arms he was quiet and content... and the most beautiful baby in the world (though I might be a bit biased). Last month, I became a grandpa.

Most babies don't look like anyone in particular when they're born, but man - there is no denying who this one belongs to. He looks exactly like his father. Right now, the similarities are only physical, but as I stared into his familiar little face, I thought of how through the years to come he will grow to resemble Peter in other ways as well. Facial expressions. Habits. Values. As he moves through the years alongside his dad, he will learn much from him and take on some of his father's characteristics himself. In doing life together, Peter will impart not just knowledge to his son, but also wisdom - the ability to take that information and use it to make sound decisions in his life.

As your insurance agent, we try to do something similar with you. Our goal is not just to write a policy for you, but to help you understand the specific issues your business faces from a risk management perspective and the options of protection available, and then to help you apply that knowledge so you can make the best choice. It's our hope that as we work together through the years, your understanding of insurance matters will deepen, and you will become even better equipped to handle the challenges you face.

Here's to growing up...

Green May be the Way to Go, but How Will Your Insurance Apply?

  Gavel

Environmentally-friendly construction, also known as "green" construction, is increasing rapidly in the United States. Concerns about global climate change, U.S. dependence on foreign sources of energy, and rising energy costs are inspiring individuals and businesses to construct buildings with a reduced carbon footprint. This trend has important implications for settlement of insurance claims when green buildings suffer damage.

A green building is one that has met the requirements for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. The U.S. Green Building Council developed LEED in 1998 as a way to help building owners identify and use practical and measurable designs, construction, operations and maintenance practices that are environmentally-friendly. Green buildings are, compared to standard buildings, more energy and water efficient, produce less carbon dioxide, and have a healthier indoor environment.

Artisan Contractors Insurance

Plumbers, electricians, carpenters, tree surgeons and roofers who perform skilled work on a customer's premises are just a few examples of artisan contractors. Piano tuners, interior decorators, exterminators and other skilled service providers are also considered artisan contractors. These contractors require special insurance for their tools and equipment, which are commonly moved from one site to another until each job is finished. The most affordable and efficient way for an artisan contractor to get liability and property coverage is to obtain a Business Owners Policy (BOP) that is tailored to fit individual needs. Although they might be marketed under varying names, such policies usually have similar terms.

Additional Insured Status... Are You Sure?Flames

(Guest Contributor: John H. Perten, Esq.)

The requirement that one party name another as an "Additional Insured" on an insurance policy is common. For example, oftentimes as part of lease a landlord will require that it be added as an "Additional Insured" to a tenant's liability policy. In a construction setting, typically the owner will require "Additional Insured" status under the general contractor's or subcontractors' liability policies. Consultants are often asked to name a project owner as an "Additional Insured." As an "Additional Insured," one can make a claim directly against the policy even though it is not the policy holder. An "Additional Insured" can also demand direct indemnity and defense rights by the insurer should they be sued.

In order to confirm that one has, in fact, been named an "Additional Insured," insurance agents often issue a certificate of liability insurance, sometimes referred to as a "binder." The person to whom the certificate is issued is usually identified at the bottom of the page as a "Certificate Holder." Note, however, that being a "Certificate Holder" is not the same as...
