Personal Perspectives
from Mason & Mason
Greetings!

Once upon a time, there was a girl who worked at an insurance agency. The girl had a favorite pen. The pen didn't appear to be anything special. It looked just like an ordinary BIC, the kind you might find almost anywhere.

Ah, but to the girl... this pen was special. It fit perfectly in her manicured hand as if it knew it that it was home. The ink flowed smoothly and left its dark stain on the page in even and clear strokes. It was just right.

Bic pen

One day, the girl noticed that the ink in the pen was nearly gone. For days she cried (ok, whined) that soon her favorite pen would be useless and she'd have to find a replacement. The other girls in the office poked fun at her for making such a big deal out of the pen, for they believed it to be the same as a million others... but the girl knew differently.

My flair for the dramatic aside, this is a true story. My favorite pen died last week. I did make a big deal out of it, and I was kind of "pooh-poohed" for that because, as noted above, it really did look like any other pen. That said, there WAS something special about the way this one wrote, and I was sad to have to throw it away. It might have seemed to be generic to others, but I knew that it was different.

Many people view insurance agencies as duplicates of one another, each one just more of the same. While the products offered by most agencies are similar and the different firms may seem generic to the average eye, they are not all the same. At M&M, we offer comprehensive coverage and competitive pricing, but we like to think it's our commitment to customer service that really sets us apart. We're constantly seeking out new ways to keep in touch with our clients, to get them the information they need, and to be constantly asking questions that lead to an insurance program that is a perfect fit for them, adjusting as their needs dictate. One of a kind service - that's our goal.

Do you have a story to share about the care you've received from M&M? We'd love to hear it! Shoot me an email anytime. Knowing what we're doing right (and wrong) helps us to make your insurance experience that much better. We want you to think of M&M and know that the fit is "just right" for you.

Until next month,

10 ESSENTIAL HURRICANE CLAIM TIPS

HurricaneHurricane Irene's destruction has left many people facing extensive property damage. Individuals who must file a claim have several things to do. First, make any emergency repairs that are necessary to prevent further damage. Don't attempt any non-emergency repairs until an insurance adjuster is able to assess the property. Be sure to take clear photos of the damage. Next, contact one of our insurance agents. If the number was lost in the damage, consult the Insurance Information Institute's list of claim phone numbers for various insurance companies. Next, consider the following common questions and valuable...

DOG BITE PREVENTION

growling dog If you own a dog, you should be aware that it is not completely unlikely that your dog might bite. According to 2009 figures from the CDC, approximately 4.5 million Americans are bitten by dogs every year. Of these bites, about one in five result in wounds that require medical attention. Furthermore, the property/casualty industry pays out hundreds of millions of dollars to satisfy dog bite claims each year. But you can take steps to make it less likely that your dog will bite.

Prior to bringing a dog into your household:

  • Speak with a professional such as a veterinarian, animal behaviorist, or a responsible breeder to find out which breeds of dogs are the best fit for your household.
  • Dogs with aggressive natures are not appropriate for households with children.
  • Pay attention to cues that...

POLICY DEDUCTIBLE INCREASES: THE SAFER WAY TO SAVE PREMIUM DOLLARS
 CASH

Money is still tight for many Americans, meaning most are still looking to save when and where they can. Some people have even turned to their insurance policies as a place to cut costs. Insurance can be expensive, but consumers need to ask themselves where and how they can really save money in this area without jeopardizing the protections offered by their coverages.

Two typical places that many insured individuals think they can cut the cost of their premiums are from reducing the dwelling/liability limits on their Homeowners policy and reducing the liability limits on their Auto insurance policy.

In reality, cutting the liability limits on these policies leaves you highly vulnerable to risk and will not ultimately save you any money over the long run. Although you might save a few dollars now with such tactics, it really isn't worth it when you stop to think about just how much you could lose if you were sued after someone was injured in your home.

If you want to decrease your premiums, a much more prudent way to do it is by...
