Greetings!
As I write this, a huge weather system is sweeping the Northeast. The NARI meeting had to be rescheduled for this week. Businesses and schools are closed. Love it or hate it, people's reactions to the storm are as extreme as the snowfall totals.
This winter, it seems that things have been turned upside down and all around. Our office in NH has received low snow totals, while Boston and the surrounding areas have been DUMPED on. If you ask Gwen V. how she feels about this, she'll tell you she doesn't like the situation. Not at all. She's a skier, and she LOVES snow. Stop and chat with Kim W. and she'll give you an opposite opinion. An avid photographer, she likes to take pictures of the snow, but once she's got her shots? It can all just GO AWAY (and she means NOW!)
We all have our filters, don't we? We see things through the lens of our experiences, our natural tendencies, and our personal makeup. What we have been through, as well as our individual desires and character traits, all contribute to how we see things.
Here at Mason & Mason, we have a diverse team. We all enjoy doing different things in our time away from the office, and our personalities form an amazing mix that is a potpourri of life and light, with some hilarity thrown in - just for fun. In spite of our differences, we share this one thing in common: we get risk management. We don't just get it... it's such a huge part of who we are that we really don't ever STOP thinking about things from an insurance standpoint. Maybe not so much fun for our families (although they actually do laugh at us), but for you? It's a very good thing.
We know that for you, that policy and all of its forms can be confusing. We love it when we're able to break down coverage in a way that makes it easier to understand. And if this insurance stuff isn't your thing - that's ok. We've got the lens, and we're looking at your program from all angles to make sure your coverage is picture perfect. It's what we do, and we love it... regardless of how we feel about the snow. If you're not already insured with us, why not give us a call and let us get a snapshot of your current coverage? We'd love to bring things into focus for you!
Have a great month!

Does Your Business Have a Disaster Recovery Plan?
Of events with negative financial and commercial impacts, natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes are at the top of the list. In 1906, a massive earthquake in San Francisco touched off a financial panic that nearly turned into a full-scale depression. Hurricane Katrina in 2005 cost an astounding $125 billion dollars in damages. The hurricane shut down nine oil refineries and another 30 oil drilling platforms.
Obviously, natural disasters can wreak havoc on all industries, not just oil and fishing. Small and large businesses are equally afraid of the effects a natural disaster will have on their balance sheets. The inability to recover quickly from a disaster can mean...

When a contractor works on several parts of a structure, and a mistake they make on one part causes damage to other parts they worked on, does their Liability insurance cover all of the damage, some of it, or none of it? This is the question a Texas court answered in a 2009 decision interpreting the Commercial General Liability policy's "that particular part" clause. This phrase has been the subject of many court cases because, to some extent, its meaning is in the eye of the beholder.
In the Texas case, the contractor worked on a condominium project. They performed the water-sealing on exterior finishes and retaining walls improperly, permitting large quantities of water to enter the structure through multiple points, including ceilings and walls and under doors. The water damaged other areas of the project on which the contractor had worked, including stud framing and interior drywall. The contractor notified their insurance company, but the company...

Not that insurance isn't an appropriate risk prevention tool, but it's not always economically feasible or efficient to try and cover each and every possible risk with insurance. There are actually many risks that can be dealt with thorough the concepts of risk transfer, risk sharing, risk retention, risk control, risk prevention, and risk avoidance. Let's look at some key points about each...
