Personal Perspectives
from Mason & Mason
Greetings!

I have the most amazing group of friends. They're not the kind of friends you smile at in the grocery store, but the ones you stop and have a half-hour conversation with, blocking the bread aisle. They're the ones who have seen you at your best, your worst, and all the stages in between and still love you. I think my son has the best perspective on our relationships. One afternoon I told him we were having company for dinner. Later, he asked who was coming. When I told him who our guests would be he responded, "MAmaaaaaaaa... you said we were having 'company!' That's not company, that's FAMILY!"  So that tells you a bit about my friends. J

Friends

A few months ago we gathered together to celebrate the birthday of one of my "sisters". I walked into party central to find her wearing an adorable plastic tiara that read, "39". I made a face and said, "Well, that's not right..." rolling the number over in my head. My sweet friend said, "Oh, yes it is!" (a bit too cheerily, I might add), to which I responded, "Then that means..." A round of hysterical laughter ensued as they all made sure to finish the sentence for me: "That's right, baby... you'll be FORTY this year!"

I seriously walked into that room thinking that I was 37 years old. I wasn't just pretending to not know my age because I didn't want to admit it... I really had lost track of time and had spent the past year thinking I was turning 38 this year. It's a fact my "family" has not let me live down, and let me tell you... the ribbing that has led up to Wednesday, April 28th has been merciless! It's ok. This teasing is something I won't forget, and revenge will be sweet. With friends who are family, the opportunities for blackmail are endless. J

Assuming that this was not a subconscious effort to avoid turning 40 (and I haven't completely ruled that out), how on earth can a person forget how old she is? Something that is so basic... so important to keep in mind? It begs the question: what else am I forgetting? Listen, if I can forget something as fundamental as my age, there are plenty of other things that can fall through the cracks along the way. When my daughter switched up her vehicle, did I remember to ask Pat to make the change on our auto policy? Did I talk with her about the appraisal increasing the value of my home and how that might affect my insurance?

Regardless of how insignificant some of these things may seem to me, and how easy they would be to neglect or forget, if I were to suffer loss and file a claim, having accurate information on file could be the difference between receiving compensation and needing consolation. And as my "family-friends" have been so pleased to tell me, I need all the help I can get at my age.

If (like me) you have a tendency to be forgetful, you're welcome to give us a call at (800) 298-0802. One of our wonderful team members will be happy to chat with you and answer any questions you might have.

And to my "family" - I am NOT old... I'm chronologically gifted!

Every Driver Needs to Evaluate their Insurance Needs

Crash

No driver can afford to be without Automobile insurance, but it can be difficult to know how much coverage you really need. These days most states require that all drivers purchase car insurance, and in states where coverage is mandated there is a minimum coverage threshold that must be met. Many drivers assume that this state minimum coverage is enough, but in many cases that level of protection is completely inadequate. It is therefore important for every driver to evaluate their own insurance needs in order to determine the best level of coverage for Liability, Property Damage and other insurance categories.

Why the Minimum

When states pass laws mandating that every driver carry Automobile insurance they need to consider a number of factors, but affordability is often near the top of the list. If the state legislature is going to force people to purchase a product or service they need to make sure that product or service will be affordable. For this reason many states set the bar very low for Auto insurance coverage. This low bar makes policies more affordable, but it also leaves many drivers without the protection they really need.

For that reason it is important to look at your own state's minimum coverage levels and determine if those levels really provide adequate coverage. If for instance your state requires that you carry only $10,000 in Property Damage insurance, what happens if you...

After School Hours are Dangerous
Teen Driver Parents have always been concerned about their teenagers driving on the weekend, especially at night. However, a new AAA study of crash data reveals that after school hours can be as deadly for teenage drivers as weekend nights. The researchers advise parents that they need to be just as vigilant about monitoring their teens' driving on weekday afternoons as they are on weekend nights.

The researchers studied the number of fatal crashes involving teenage drivers between 2002 and 2005. What they discovered is that almost as many 16 and 17-year-old drivers were involved in fatal crashes between 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday as were on Friday and Saturday nights between 9:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. There were 1,100 weekday crashes and 1,237 weekend crashes.

To combat this growing problem, the AAA recommends that parents do the following...

Tips to Lower Your Homeowners Insurance Premiums

Puzzle pieces

There are several steps you can take to ensure you are getting the best Homeowners insurance rates possible for the coverage you need:

      • Before purchasing a home, it is wise to learn about its insurance loss history. If there have been past losses, be sure to inspect the home closely to determine if proper repairs were made. The CLUE and A-PLUS databases enable insurers to check the claim history of the property as well as that of the homeowner.
      • Raising your deductible is another way to reduce your premiums. Higher deductibles on your Homeowners insurance could produce savings of 25% or more, although this is tactic that should be examined with your agent, and not one to be made lightly...
