RRP - Important Information
January 12, 2010
Greetings!

It's not typical for us to send out a mailing in addition to our monthly newsletter, but a matter of great importance has come to our attention and we wanted to be sure you were aware of it as well.

This information is important and time sensitive.

Tom Messier, CIC

The EPA has a new program that oversees all work in homes built prior to 1978 (Renovation, Repair and Painting - RRP) that has some very significant fines if not followed. Part of the program is now in effect but much of it won't happen until late April, 2010. At that time any construction company working in a house built prior to 1978 must be certified by the EPA. Certification takes a minimum of 90 days, but must be done.

There are very specific containment requirements that must be followed when doing the work. A member of the firm must be certified as a lead renovator and he must be on site at all times during set up, demolition and clean up. After clean up is done, a dust test must be performed. Record keeping is essential for compliance.

This new rule is for all homes built prior to 1978. There is an assumption by the EPA that all homes built prior to 1978 are contaminated with lead paint. The program does not actually test to see if lead is present.

Fines start at $32,500 per day, per violation. Obviously, noncompliance with RRP may have a devastating effect on your business.  We have gathered together some information and listed several links from the EPA below to help you in understanding the changes.  Please take the time to review the information and educate yourself on the requirements of this new program. It is THAT important.

If you have any questions, please call us at (800) 298-0802. We're committed to making sure you are aware of this new rule.
