AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH
|
|
The month of
April is Autism Awareness Month. With how complicated Autism Spectrum Disorders
can be, as well as the increase in diagnoses in recent years, the debate about
treatment options has become an important discussion for families and
therapists. The AAMFT has been cultivating this discussion for
years:

Blue Skies and Springy Weather!
|
March 2010
|

|
March 18, 2010
Hello Spring!
There is a lot going on at CFFC so we need an extra
newsletter!
Save these dates:
- Jennifer Eckert and Holly Bishop of CFFC are presenting at
ACONE on Saturday, the 17th of April.
- April 28 is the
reception at our new building and we want to collect photos and drawings, so we
will have some photographers on hand to take pictures galore and some art rooms
set up for young artists to design away! We are inviting the artists who
donated their work to decorate the building through The Art Connection. Our
downstairs neighbors, The Court Clinic, will be having their open house on the same day.
- Donate to our Volunteer Cruise - May 25th - a
chance to celebrate all of the wonderful people who help CFFC day in and day
out.
- July 11 to 14 is our 25th ARC Summer Intensives:
Takin' It To The Streets. Brochure now available on our website.
- November 10 is our auction and our 15th birthday
so our Quinceanera!
- February 3-5, 2011 is our 5th ACTION
International Conference on Post Adoption Services to be held on the Asian New
Year and the start of the Year of the Rabbit. Call for proposals will be available soon!
- Groups galore are happening at our new space. It is getting very 'warmed' by the kids
and parents who are working hard and playing hard in that building. Keep your eyes open for flyers in the coming weeks for new groups and our summer mini-camp groups (week long groups for kids of various ages).
Spring = New Beginnings:
- To our MBHP (Medicaid) Clients: CFFC's MassHealth coverage has been provided through our
partnership with the Justice Resource Institute for six years. We enjoyed our
time working with them and especially thank Kate McDermott for her hard work
and guidance.
We have recently begun a new partnership with Rick Small and The Walker School. One way that we are collaborating is via our MBHP work as an
outreach site for Family and Community Solutions (FCS), a private, non-profit
behavioral healthcare agency that specializes in a wide array of mental health
care services. FCS is a part of Walker.
We hope this new partnership will expand both of our agencies and
resources and will create more of a healing container for families and children
in our community.
We ask that every MBHP client complete the new CFFC/FCS
paperwork so we can continue to bill your insurance.
CFFC cannot accept
your MassHealth insurance until all paperwork is completed.
Please know that your entire
file is still maintained at CFFC and your file up to March 31 is still kept at
the main clinic at JRI, and after that From April 1 on the original is kept at
FCS. Our confidentiality regulations will remain the same, as will our
commitment to each and every family.
If you have any further questions, please call Amanda at
CFFC- 617-547-0909 or email billing@cffc.org
.
- I am presenting at Middlesex Partnerships for Youth on March
29, in Rochester NY at Hillside on April 16/17, Cambridge Health Alliance on
April 28, American Academy of Adoption Attorneys on April 29th, and Alliance for the Study of Adoption and Culture at MIT April 29-May 1.
- Read From Home to Homeland: What Adoptive
Families Need to Know before Making a Return trip to China, edited by Debra
Jacobs, Irish Chin Ponte and Leslie Kim Wang. Included in it is a chapter by Joyce Maguire Pavao called: Back to Where It All Began.
We are still dealing with a budget crisis and loss of state
funding. Your contributions keep
our work alive and keep some children and families safe and sane.
Thank you for all that you do.
Joyce

Korean Government Scholarship Program 2010
|
Undergraduate Programs:
NIIED finally published the plans and program for
the Korean Government
Scholarship Program for Undergraduate Students.
Unfortunately NIIED decided not to include a quota for Korean adoptees.
Furthermore the quotas given by NIIED include Sweden as the only country
where adoptees were sent to. All other countries are excluded.
All Swedish adoptees who would like to apply for the undergraduate program
(1 year Korean language course, 4 years undergraduate courses) please take a
look at the website of NIIED (http://www.niied.go.kr). Go to
"English" and
then to "Korean Government Scholarship Students". You'll find under
notice
two zipfiles with all information in Korean and English.
Graduate Programs:
All those who would like to apply at G.O.A.'L for
the Korean Government
Scholarship Program for Graduate Studies, please be informed that NIIED will
open the program only in March 2010. Therefore you can probably apply from
March 2010 on at G.O.A.'L for the KGSP for Graduate Studies Program (Master
or Ph.D). In 2010 there are major differences to the KGSP Grad Program 2009.

Adoption Research Opportunities
|
Wheelock College Social Work Study (Katherine Walker is a former CFFC employee!)
We would like to invite you to participate in our research
study surrounding the rights of adopted children and the adoption process. Our
research group is investigating the legal process, the cultural components,
attachment and bonding issues, and the integration of families within the
adoption process. We are interested in knowing from you what services are
provided for adoptive families as they approach these four elements of the
adoption process. Not only are we interested in knowing what services are
provided, but we also want to know what kind of services people feel are needed,
but were not supplied through their experience with the adoption process.
Our research group is complied of six graduate students from
the social work program at Wheelock College. All of us are in our concentration
year in our graduate work, which requires us to conduct a Human Rights project
that directly impacts our work with children and families in the community. As
we seek to address some of the needs within the adoption process we ask for
your help in this accomplishment. Our goal is that by the end of this process
we will be able to compile and distribute an adoption resource book to the
community, where adoptive families and social workers may find knowledge about
and access to resources within the community. All that is required of you is to click here
by March 31, 2010 to complete our survey. All information will be kept
anonymous, with no way to link the information back to you. By choosing to
complete this survey you are giving us your informed consent to participate in
our research study.
The survey should only take about 5-10 minutes to complete.
We understand that your time is precious and we want to respect that, so we
have tried to keep the questions to a bare minimum. If you could spare a little
time out of your day to complete our survey we would greatly appreciate your
help.
If you have any questions regarding the survey or project
please feel free to contact us at WheelockMSWAdoptionProject@gmail.com
Thank you for your time,

Mixed-Race Women Speak Out
|
Open Call for Submissions:
OTHER TONGUES: Mixed-Race Women Speak Out
Co-editors Adebe D.A. and Andrea Thompson are seeking submissions for an
anthology of writing by and about mixed-race women of Black/white heritage,
intended for publication in Fall 2010.
The purpose of this anthology is to explore the question of how Black/white
mixed-race women in North America identify in the 21st Century. The anthology
will also serve as a place to learn about the social experiences, attitudes,
and feelings of others, and what racial identity has come to mean today. We are
inviting previously unpublished submissions that engage, document, and/or
explore the experiences of being mixed-race, by placing interraciality as the
center, rather than periphery, of analysis.
Please send one (1) submission of up to 2500 words of poetry, fiction, creative
non-fiction, or spoken word as a SINGLE attachment to othertonguesanthology@gmail.com
<http://l.com>
Black and white images and artwork should be 300 dpi and sent as attachments in
jpg. of tiff. format. Artwork and photography limited to three (3) per
applicant.
Please include your contact information, including your name, address, phone
number, e-mail, title(s) of work submitted, type of submission, and a short
artist bio (50 words max) in the body of the email, with your name and the type
of submission in the subject line (e.g. "Jazmine - Poetry Submission"). All
submissions are due April 15, 2010. Incomplete submissions will not be
considered.
If you prefer that your contribution remain anonymous, please include this
preference at the top of your submission. All personal information you provide
