Journey of the Adopted Self
Lifton, Betty Jean
This book draws on a study of adult adopted people as well as the author's personal experiences to illuminate how adopted people form a sense of self. The search for biological and historical roots can be a journey towards wholeness.

 The Primal Wound
Verrier, Nancy
Eye-opening revelations of how separation at birth impacts adopted people lifelong.

Never let other peoples opinions hold you back... Only you know your potential!

Here's some facts... Harry Potter was rejected by 12 publishers... Michael Jordan was cut from his high school team... Walt Disney was told he lacked imagination and one record company told
the Beatles, "WE DON'T LIKE YOUR SOUND".

Keep going!

"A society that neglects its children and robs them of their human potential can extinguish itself without an external enemy."

-Selma Fraiberg-

It was in the mid-twentieth century that Selma Fraiberg, and her colleagues, developed a fresh and clean approach to reclaiming at risk youth.  The pessimism of the "deviance and deficit" mindsets were rejected by this group and others.  This strength-based perspective was, from the beginning, a part of the Normative Crises Model that I developed in the 70's and 80's.

Even the most challenging young person is seen to have huge strengths and resilience.  Some of the theorists who created this thinking had escaped Hitler and shared a profound commitment to treating all persons with dignity and respect.  I fear that in the past several years, our country and our media have forgotten this and have been presenting America and Americans as a more punitive and negative country and culture.

Summer is fast approaching and without structure and purpose kids more often feel at loose ends.  Children who have suffered trauma and neglect need structure to feel safe (even though they rebel against it).  The kinds of re-traumatizing therapies that are said to be effective for kids who have suffered abuse, often have a counter productive result.  It is with this focus on belonging, mastery, independence, self- control and generosity that we offer a series of brief, intensive summer programs for children and youth at CFFC.

We have no funding for these programs, but we can use insurance payments and self pay with sliding scale for these camp-like therapeutic programs and we have passion and commitment. We are also welcoming any corporate or private donations to support the strengthening of youth and the establishment of their self-esteem and goodness this summer.

We invite the adults to come and learn with us at our 23rd annual conference on Cape Cod in July!  You could use a 'getaway' and some insight into yourself and your children.

Summer is a time of growth and change and relaxation for some, but it is also a time of boredom, fear, and stress for others.  Let's try to make this the summer of our content and not the summer of our discontent.  Join us in promoting belonging, mastery, independence, self-control and generosity in all of the children and youth in your life in the ways that you know best.

VISIONS

VISIONS Inc. is a non-profit multicultural consulting firm that works globally to address issues of diversity in various institutions. For over 20 years we have offered opportunities for people to connect across differences through valuable diversity training that can be used to create a more accepting and productive atmosphere.

This year we would like to further develop a youth chapter of the VISIONS Inc. network. Throughout the past 5 years we have started to train youth consultants in order to teach the VISIONS model to young people.  We would like to finalize the VISIONS youth curriculum and engage a core youth consultant team who can be called upon for VISIONS youth work.

"We believe that through multicultural education, positive expression, and the practice of collective responsibility, young people can become catalysts for positive change in our community, and the world."-J. B. C.

The VISIONS Inc. Legacy Project is a job opportunity for 10-20 youth from ages 15- 25 who are interested in the following:
v Youth work
v Diversity
v Long term job opportunities
v The arts
v Community activism and organizing

This 8 week training program (from June 23rd-August 23rd 2008) will give participants an in depth understanding of multiculturalism, and valuable strategies to lead discussions about diversity issues in cross-cultural settings. Summer program participants will have the opportunity to express themselves creatively through the production of a community event. This collaborative event will provide safe, positive engagement for Boston area youth and an opportunity for local performers.

Through this program participants will learn or enhance their skills in facilitation, community organizing, public speaking, networking, conflict management and creative expression.
The 4 hour sessions will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays (Time of day will be based on participants availability) participants will receive a $100 per week stipend.

Summer program participants will also be given the option of continuing their VISIONS training to become certified VISIONS Youth Consultants.  One of our main goals with this project is to build a core group of Youth Consultants who can eventually carry on the mission of the organization.
