March 2008
April is the real beginning of Spring! Even though we get a few bitter cold days, some rain, and maybe a flake or flurry of snow, we know that those daffodils and forsythia are budding and blooming and that real spring and summer are not too far behind.
It sure has been a rough winter here in Cambridge and a very long one! At CFFC we have been working very hard to help all of the children and families that call or come in to see us. The spring is a huge time for conferences and trainings and so I am gone often. Thank goodness CFFC has a team that is amazing and capable! The economy has certainly taken a downturn and now, more than ever, we need to have the help of our friends who are good corporate donors to the work that is done here at CFFC.
April is also Child Abuse Prevention Month, and we work very hard with the many families we see; helping them to work calmly with their children who have often come to them with histories of abuse and neglect, and who may have a hard time controlling their impulses and controlling their anger. It is not possible to work with families by adoption without expertise in Child Development, Trauma Treatment, Cultural Sensitivity, and a Family Systems perspective. Our staff is always being trained at our conferences, workshops, supervision and in the team approach that we have to working with each and every family. Our newer therapists and trainees are always doing about 1000 hours of co-therapy with a more experienced clinician, in order to gain expertise to work with our clients. This is not cost effective. But, this is good training and good ethical practice. Your support of the cutting edge work that we do in the models for treatment, and the models for training, at CFFC is what keeps us growing and helping every child-- and his/her many families-- who comes to CFFC for guidance, consultation, education, support and therapy.
This week CFFC hosted (along with AFC Mentoring) an evening of fun and fundraising featuring Alison Larkin reading from her great new novel The English American. We are grateful to Alison Larkin, the Hotel Marlowe, Harvard Book Store, Penny Callan Partridge and Bob Childs and the Childsplay musicians, for their generous donations of time and energy. We are also grateful to Katherine Walker and to our magnificent staff who really did an amazing job of organizing this event and making it happen. Special thanks to Marie French and AFC Mentoring for their help as well.
Because we are small- but mighty- while running this event, we were also running a clinic and for the day of, and the day after ,running a training for the Department of Social Services Supervisors. I was away in New Hampshire last week speaking in Keene at Monadnock Talks for two days. I leave on 'tax day' evening for Ireland, where I will have a meeting at Trinity College Dublin with Robbie Gilligan, Professor of Social Work and Social Policy, Head of the School of Social Work and Social Policy and a Fellow of Trinity College Dublin. He is also Associate Director (and co-founder) of the Children's Research Centre. I will do a training at University College Dublin with Dr Valerie O'Brien BSc, MSc, Dip Family Therapy, PhD, and then, again with Professor O'Brien will head to a conference to introduce the new Hague regulations in Dublin, where I will speak on Ethics in Adoption--- That is the work part of the trip! (Which is so great and the opportunity to work with such great people!)
The play part of the trip will involve a trip to the Cliffs of Moher, and to one of the Aran Islands as well as a jaunt to County Clair and to Tipperary. Then a final couple of days in Dublin catching up with some friends. Then back to CFFC having missed only a few short days because of our holiday on Patriots Day!
In early June, CFFC will be honoring all of our volunteers and we are more than happy to accept your donations to celebrate their great work! Katherine, katherinew@kinnect.org, can give you more information.
Please help us by sending photographs of children (past or present - ancient or present), especially those at birthday events. (jpeg, scanned or send the actual photograph and we will scan and return the original). We have releases that we would like you to sign so that we can use these for a photo collage and for our website. We will also be recording the voices of children for our upcoming Courage and Curiosity event in November and we are eager to have the voiceovers of children of all ages. Again, contact katherinew@kinnect.org for more information.
The next big event is our 23rd Annual ARC Intensive Trainings on the Cape in July. We would love to have an even larger group in attendance this year and we hope that you will come whether you are someone who lives in the family of adoption or someone who works in the world of adoption.
We are accepting proposals for our Fourth International Conference on Post Adoption Services in February, 2009 at the Marlowe Hotel, Cambridge. Save the Dates of February 22nd-25th, 2009.
Our VCO team from Harvard Business School (Kalpana Naidu, Neeti Shah and Satya Rashavan) has been amazing and they are about to present us with a package that will be taken to several corporations in search of Corporations to Foster and Invest in CFFC.
We certainly are blessed to have April bring showers of good will and great donations and volunteers to CFFC. Thank you always for your generosity of spirit and of self.

Voice For Adoption
|
Voice for Adoption has released a position paper outlining key principles for making the adoption tax credit work better to promote adoptions of waiting children in foster care.
The principles call for ensuring that the tax credit is effective at promoting and supporting adoptions of waiting children in foster care, is beneficial for families who adopt children with special needs from foster care, and accounts for the fact that many of the expenses associated with adopting from foster care show up after the adoption is finalized.

SEEKING ADOPTED KOREAN WOMEN TO INTERVIEW
My name is Stephanie Day. I am a doctoral candidate in the Clinical Psychology Program at the University of Massachusetts Boston and a Korean adoptee. I am working on a research study exploring the experiences of Korean adopted women who are making or have already made the decision to become first-time biological mothers. I am interested in interviewing women at least once, and possibly twice about their understanding of themselves and others. The first interview will be in person and should take about 90-120 minutes. To participate in the interview you must be a Korean adopted woman, between 25 and 40 years of age, in a romantic relationship with a White man for at least 8 months, and have made the decision to have a child or already have only one child who has not started kindergarten yet.Your voice and experiences could contribute greatly to an understanding of the identity development of adult Korean adoptees. In addition, you will have the opportunity to share your personal experiences and may even learn something new about yourself in the process. As a token of appreciation for your participation, you will be given $10 and entered in a raffle for a $50 gift card. If you are interested in participating in an interview or would like more information, please feel free to contact me. I look forward to hearing from you.
