News for You and Your Pet

March 1, 2012

Dear ,

Ingrid and AmberIt's been a busy couple of weeks here. We're still excited about The Conscious Cat's nomination for "Best Website About Cats" by About.com, and we hope that you're voting for us every day. Voting ends March 21.

It's been a while since I've written about Reiki - I've been too busy doing session! Today's feature about remote Reiki explains how this energy therapy works at a distance, and what the benefits are.The majority of my Reiki sessions are done remotely.

Walking is the one exercise I've been able to stick with for all my life. I walk almost every day in (almost) any kind of weather. Alexander Technique Teacher Michaela Hauser-Wagner tells us how walking keeps your back healthy.

With warm regards to you and your furry family members,

Ingrid.

Remote Reiki for You and Your Pet

Reiki cat

by Ingrid King

Reiki is a hands-on healing method that originated in Japan.  It is based on the idea that all living beings have life energy flowing through them. When life energy is high, you and your pets are healthy and balanced, more relaxed and less likely to get sick. When it is low, you and your pets will often be more easily affected by stress and less resistant to illness. Reiki helps return your body to its natural state of balance and well-being.  It is a safe complement to conventional Western medicine, Chinese medicine, herbal medicine, homeopathy and all other forms of healing.

Reiki offers numerous benefits for both pets and people and can help with minor things like head aches or stomach aches, colds, flu, tension and anxiety as well as serious illness like cancer and heart disease.  It can reduce or eliminate side effects of conventional medical treatment, including the negative effects of chemotherapy, post-operative pain and depression. It can strengthen the immune system for surgeries and cancer therapies. It accelerates natural healing following surgery or illness. In some cases people have experienced complete healings which have been confirmed by medical tests before and after the Reiki treatments.  However, while some have experienced miracles, they cannot be guaranteed.  Most people experience stress reduction along with gradual improvement of physical and psychological condition.

One aspect of Reiki that is often intriguing to people new to the concept of energy healing is remote healing. Also known as distance healing, remote healing is an energetic healing process that can be best explained through the principles of Quantum physics. It has been proven to be extremely effective, sometimes even more effective than local, hands-on healing.

How does it work?

Everything in our world is made up of energy, and everything is connected and part of the same, continuous whole. Remote healing is, in essence, "wireless" healing. We accept that cell phones, televisions and even our garage door openers work in this wireless way. When we think about energy in the same way, perhaps it's not as much of a leap that all energy travels that way, including the energy of healing.

In a remote healing session, the practitioner connects with the person or animal requesting the healing energetically. Every living being has a unique frequency, and the practitioner tunes into that unique energy. We are all part of the same unified field of consciousness, and it's simply a question of "dialing in" to the correct frequency. Once the connection is made, the practitioner sends the healing energy to the recipient.

Recipients of remote healing report the same sensations recipients of hands-on healing experience, such as a sense of heat or tingling in certain parts of the body, a sense of calm and peace, and a deep sense of relaxation.

Why choose distance healing over hands on?

Other than the obvious reason - the person or animal requesting the healing is not in the same geographical area as the practitioner - remote healing can be a good option for animals who are skittish about being with strangers or too hyper to sit still in a strange environment. It can also be great in an emergency situation, since a remote session can usually be scheduled with very little advance notice.

A remote session is an easy, convenient way to enhance your well-being from the comfort of your own home. For humans with busy schedules, distance sessions allow them to benefit from a Reiki treatment without having to make time to drive to and from the session.

I offer remote Reiki sessions for pets and for people; in fact, more than half of my Reiki practice, both human and animal, is with remote clients. My clients have experienced success with a variety of conditions, the following are just two examples:

Success Story (human):

A client needed major dental surgery and requested distance Reiki to help with pain control and accelerate healing. Reiki was sent the day before the procedure, during the procedure, the evening after the procedure, and twice more in the days following the procedure, two days apart. The client reported less pain, less bleeding and more rapid healing than with prior surgeries of a similar nature.

Success Story (pet):

The owner of a fifteen-year-old cat with virulent nasal discharge caused by calici virus requested distance Reiki. The cat was not eating or drinking and was frail and had very little energy. After just one distance Reiki session, this kitty started eating - in fact, she got up towards the end of the session and went to her food bowl and ate for the first time in days. Improvement continued with subsequent sessions. Her owner reported that she had more energy and seemed stronger.

Walk for a Healthier Back

walking the dog

By Michaela Hauser-Wagner

You have probably heard it a dozen times: walking is one of the best exercises available to us. The benefits include the maintenance of healthy cholesterol and blood pressure levels, weight management and fitness, as well as mood regulation.

Many people wake up in the morning with pain and feel better after they have moved for a while. In 2008 the British Medical Journal published a study with almost 600 people suffering from back pain, in which they could effectively demonstrate the positive results of Alexander Technique lessons for back pain patients. The only exercise the researchers recommended in addition to lessons was walking regularly.

So, we might ask, what is happening on a walk that helps our backs to integrate.

  • Walking reduces pain. Movement produces synovial fluid, thereby lubricating body joints; twenty-four independent vertebrae are forming the spine and each vertebra has 10 facet joints connecting it to either the vertebrae above or below. When you walk you "oil" your joint mechanism.
  • Walking is dynamic as opposed to fixed. With every step you have the opportunity to practice your thinking in activity, to release an area in your body and to re-direct your awareness.
  • Walking strengthens your back. It is an organized upright movement in which the spine is challenged to carry some weight, while deep postural ("core") muscles are working. The benefits are optimized when we allow the head to be poised on top of the spine and not to add tension in back and neck muscles .
  • Walking is a whole-body activity. You can integrate and exercise your legs, feet, arms, shoulders, neck - even your cheeks if you walk with a friend and talk or laugh.
Try This - no headphones needed!

On your walks you can chose and alternate between the following mental directions:
  • Let your knees go forward and your back release backward - this leads to free hip joints and a clear separation between torso and legs.
  • Let your knees go forward and your ankles be free - then the muscles in your calves and shins can also let go of unnecessary tension.
  • Let your walk be contralateral - this means that your opposite arm and leg will swing together; your left arm and your right leg will be in front of you at the same time and vice versa. If you're walking with your dog, watch how he walks - he's doing it naturally!
  • Let your neck be free and your head lead forward and up; I think of my movement being led by my hairline on top of my forehead.
  • Let your eyes be soft and unfocused, allow them to receive the images from your surroundings.
