News for You and Your Pet

July 1, 2011

Dear ,

Ingrid and AmberLast week, I attended the Winn Feline Foundation's Annual Symposium, which was entirely dedicated to FIP. You can read my report from the symposium here.

Spending an evening at an event hosted by an organization that is dedicated to improving feline health made me realize once again how important it is for pet owners to be informed about how to keep pets happy and healthy. I try to bring you as much information about various aspects of pet health as I can. If there's a topic I haven't covered, or one that you'd like to see more information on, please send me an e-mail - I welcome your suggestions.

As we're getting ready to celebrate the 4th of July, keep in mind that it may be your pet's least favorite holiday. Keep your pets safe during the festivities with the tips below.

I've always believed that animals are natural healers, but did you know that researchers found that a cat's purr has healing properties?

We hope you enjoy this issue and find the information helpful. And if you do, please share it with a friend!

With warm regards to you and your furry family members,

Ingrid.

Keep Your Pets Safe this 4th of July

4th of july cat and dog

Independence Day is one of our favorite holidays, but for a lot of pets, it's probably their least favorite one.  As we mark the day with parades, picnics and fireworks, remember that noisy celebrations can be a scary time for our pets.

An animal's sense of hearing is much more acute than ours, and so the noises are much more intent for them.  Add to that the lack of understanding of what is going on and you can have a very scared pet on your hands.  But celebrations like the 4th of July don't have to cause such anxiety for your pets.  Here are some tips for helping your pet cope with fireworks, thunderstorms, and other loud noises:

  • Don't take your pets to outdoor celebrations. The loud noises and colorful skies may be fun for you but they are not enjoyable for your pet. In fact, they can be quite dangerous. A scared dog, running through crowds and/or traffic in the dark is a recipe for disaster.
  • Ideally, leave them at home with a human companion. If you must leave them alone, place them in a secure room or crate. Cover the crate with a blanket to help reduce the noise. Shut the curtains and drapes and turn on lights to lessen the flash of the fireworks.
  • Leave on a TV or music to drown out the noise from the fireworks. (This works during thunderstorm season as well.)
  • Make sure that they are wearing their identification tags and that the information is current.
  • Exercise them before the festivities begin - tire them out with a rigorous game of fetch or a long walk. Be sure to do this an hour or two before you leave them to give them time to calm down and enter a restful state.
  • Consider a natural calming aid like Rescue Remedy.

Have a happy and safe 4th of July!

The Cat's Purr - A Biomechanical Healing Mechanism?

Those of us who are owned by one or more cats know how wonderful it is to be around a purring cat.  But did you know that a cat's purr has healing properties and can actually heal bones, muscles and tendons?

In a 2006 study conducted by Fauna Communications, researchers found that the frequency of a cat's purr (between 25 and 140 Hz), convers the same frequencies that are therapeutic for bone growth and fracture healing, pain relief, swelling reduction, wound healing, muscle growth and repair, tendon repair, and mobility of joints.

The researchers at Fauna Communications believe that it's possible that evolution has provided the felines of this world with a natural healing mechanism for bones and other organs.  From the Fauna Communications website:

"Being able to produce frequencies that have been proven to improve healing time, strength and mobility could explain the purr's natural selection.  In the wild when food is plentiful, the felids are relatively sedentary. They will spend a large portion of the day and night lounging in trees or on the ground. Consistent exercise is one of the greatest contributors to bone, (Karlsson et al, 2001), and muscle (Roth et al, 2000; Tracy et al 1999), and tendon and ligament strength (Simoson et al, 1995; Tipton et al 1975).  If a cat's exercise is sporadic, it would be advantageous for them to stimulate bone growth while at rest.  As well, following injury, immediate exercise can rebreak one and re-tear healing muscle and tendon (Montgomery, 1989).  Inactivity decreases the strength of muscles (Tipton et al, 1975). Therefore, having an internal vibrational therapeutic system to stimulate healing would be advantageous, and would also reduce edema and provide a measure of pain relief during the healing process. "

I've always believed that animals, and cats in particular, are healers.  Isn't it nice to know that just listening to our cats purr is not only good for our soul, but also good for our body?

Here's a video of cat with a seriously strong and loud purr:
