In this issue, Dr. Yagoda will focus on nails with an effective and natural remedy to a common nail problem, nail fungus. In continuing the focus on nails, we have included an interview with Sera Chi, owner of Dashing Diva nail salon in NYC. Sera shares her secret to a fabulously indulgent pedicure!
Congratulations to Barbara Hutton, from San Francisco, CA, who won a box of BeautyScoop in this month's recipe-of-the-month contest! In Search of Fabulous Nails...
DR. MICHELLE YAGODA, NYC FACIAL PLASTIC SURGEON, DISCUSSES THE COMMON PROBLEM OF NAIL FUNGUS AND OFFERS A NATURAL AND EFFECTIVE REMEDY
CAUSES: Nail fungus is everywhere. It can often be transmitted during professional manicures and pedicures. Fungi love moisture, so it may not come as a surprise that fungi often live in the whirlpools of pedi-spa chairs in nail salons and spas. Fungal infections can be transferred from one customer to the next through improperly cleaned whirlpools, through reused/shared use of disposable instruments, or through improperly sterilized reusuable instruments.
DIAGNOSIS: Early signs of nail fungus may include a white or yellow discoloration on the nail. There may be weakness of the nail, splitting, breaking, or absence of the cuticle. Later signs include a thickened, discolored nail with crumbling edges. If you and your nail specialist are uncertain of the existence of fungus, you can make an appointment with your doctor who should be able to make a diagnosis of fungus by simple examination. TREATMENT: Make no mistake, fungal infections can be difficult to treat! Strong prescription medications are often required for lengthy courses. They are often orally ingested and may be associated with real and risky side effects. However, two well-recognized , natural remedies may be quite effective and pose no risk of painful or dangerous side effects: 1.Simply add equal amounts of clear apple cider vinegar or white vinegar to a bowl of warm water with a dropperful of hydrogen peroxide. Soak your toenails for 20 minutes each night until the entire cuticle around the nail grows back. When thie cuticle grows back, VOILA! the fungus is gone; 2. Or, you can try Zetaclear, a natural remedy with tea tree oil, jojoba, and other ingredients - all of which are individually anti-fungal. |

Sera Chi, President and Owner of
NYC's Top-Rated Dashing Diva Nail Salon, shares some pedicure tips
1. What are your secrets for avoiding toe nail fungus in a salon?
Cleanliness! Cleanliness! Cleanliness! The key to avoiding fungus is cleanliness. Since whirlpools are next to impossible to sterilize, we at Dashing Diva, don't use them. We insist that each nail technician cleans the work area before and after every client. She must clean the customer's feet as well as her own hands, with a sanitizing gel prior to starting the treatment. Each customer receives a new nail file and buffer for each and every treatment to prevent the transmission of skin and nail infections. A medical grade autoclave, like those used in operating rooms, is used to sterilize all metal tools. Finally, a modernized ventilation system brings fresh air into the premises at all times. These steps ensure cleanliness and minimize the risk of nail fungus. If you don't have a Dashing Divas near you, at least you can ask your salon to follow the same steps!
2. What do you believe are the most important ingredients for an EXCEPTIONAL pedicure?
Many people think pedicure is simply to cut, shape, clean and beautify the toes for open-toed shoes. While all of this is certainly important, an exceptional pedicure is much more than that! First, I must reiterate that cleanliness is key. Without this, you will be unable to fully relax. Then, aromatic oils are a nice addition to provide moisture, hydration and a deep sense of relaxation. A gentle leg and foot massage with reflexology can improve circulation and further reduce stress. Relaxing music and soothing refreshments enhance the overall experience. All of this contributes to what I believe is an exceptional pedicure!
3. How should someone take care of her feet BETWEEN pedicures?
Each day when you get home, take off your shoes and change into something comfortable for your feet. Elevate your feet, give them a good rest. At night, when you wash your face and brush your teeth, don't forget to clean and moisturize your feet. And, give them a good scrub once a week.
4. Can a nutritional product like BeautyScoop really make nails stronger and healthier? Absolutely. In order to have beautiful nails (and skin), it is crucial to have an adequate level of minerals, calcium and protein and oils. If you aren't eating enough those sources of nutrients, or your body sees a deficiency, you will notice peeling, splitting, cracking and breaking in your nails. In addition, you may be more likely to get infections (like toenail fungus) and find infections harder to fight. BeautyScoop is the perfect dietary product to fulfill all these necessities and nails are indeed noticeably stronger, longer and more beautiful with BeautyScoop. Dashing Diva was born in October 2003 in the heart of New York City's Greenwich Village. Now there are 28 stores on 3 continents in the following countries: United States, Japan, Philippines, Kuwait and Australia. Never before had anyone offered quick service beauty treatments in an environment that was not only beautiful but fun and relaxing as well. Everyone noticed how clean and sanitary the stores were compared to other salons. Dashing Diva took the concept of a typical neighborhood nail salon, brought it to a new level and ultimately turned it into a destination. |
