Approaching the 17th Sunday of Pentecost - Celebration, Remembrance, and Resolve

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4: 4-7) Every week in the life of the church delivers its own "news." We are living with the sad report of Elsie Schummer's death after her brave battle with pancreatic cancer. | Remembering Elsie |
Almost all of you know more than me about Elsie and her life. You possess plentiful historical knowledge and beloved stories of her. I feel as if I only got to read the "headline" of her life. Thus, I'm learning of her importance and impact upon all of you through your remembrance of the plentiful and "newsworthy" moments that you shared with her. I've learned that she used to live across the street from the church. Some of you have told me other stories that are charming, consoling, and compassionate. My own favorite memory is sitting with her in her home with Charlie her beloved dog resting at her feet. I shared a couple of Book of Common Prayer (pages 459 and 461) intercessions with her as we discussed and prayed about her illness and the path she would walk. I discovered yesterday that she had torn off a piece of paper and jotted down those page numbers and placed them in her personal prayer book. I encourage us as a parish and many of you who knew her so well and loved her so much to mentally or literally jot down a couple of your favorite prayerful and memorable stories of your friendship with Elsie. Please continue to share these loving, humorous, and honest stories with one another. St.Paul encourages his readers to always rejoice in The Lord, regardless of the circumstances they reside in. Therein, we will celebrate Elsie Schummer's life and give thanks for her presence in our lives with a Rite II - Burial of the Dead Eucharist @ 11 AM on Saturday morning (October 8, 2011). The choir will sing, Father Angelo Puopolo will return to St. James to preside, and I will offer a homily. Let us in the meantime recall that our funeral liturgy is an "Easter Liturgy." The note on 507 (BCP) reads ... | 14th Century Russian Icon (The Russian Museum) |
"Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we too, shall be raised.
The liturgy, therefore, is characterized by joy, in the certainty that "neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." ... "The very love we have for each other in Christ brings deep sorrow when we are parted by death. Jesus himself wept at the grave of his friend. So, while we rejoice that one we love has entered into the nearer presence of our Lord, we sorrow in sympathy with those who mourn."
Blessings Along The Way, Jim+

Blessing of the Animals and Festivities @ Sayler Park's Autumn Festival
| This coming Saturday is Sayler Park's Harvest Festival. It's a wonder-full opportunity for us at St. Luke's and St. James to make ourselves known to the Sayler Park community and guests from around Cincinnati. We're therefore hosting a table at the fair with some handouts about St. Luke's as well offering pet treats to passers-by who bring their pets to the festival.
Jim+ will preside at a Blessing of The Animals worship service in the park @ 2PM. We welcome everyone to invite their friends, bring their pets (dogs on a leash and cats in carriers please :-)) to come and be with us. We will be taking digital photos of pet owners and their furry, fishy, or reptilian pals for keepsakes. Help up get the word out!~
W e especially need volunteers to come and set-up @ 8:30 AM and host the table from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM. Please contact Anisa ASAP if you'd like to help us with this innovative outreach opportunity. |

Rebecca Griffiths and I attended the Missio Conference last weekend. She observed a beautiful liturgy on Saturday afternoon as well as some wonderful workshops about connecting art with worship. I sat in on a couple of workshops regarding mission outreach and making our churches better connect with the people around us. There are some descriptions of such evangelism here.
Please talk with Rebecca or me about our experiences. Let us know if you want to join us and others share the Holy Spirit's blessings and the Gospel of Jesus Christ in peaceful, prophetic, and playful ways at St. James
