February 2009

Welcome to Variety Children's Charity of
 Northern California

Dear Friends:

February has been a busy month! In addition to our Academy party and two sold-out theater events, we've been working on two exciting new partnerships which will help us touch even more children and families in our community.

We'd also like to take this opportunity to share the direction we are going in these uncertain economic times. As always, we thank you for your supoprt and welcome your input.

Yours in partnership,

Ellen

Yes, times are tough, and non-profits are feeling the effects of the economic downturn in reduced funding. Although corporate donations are down and individuals are scaling back, feedback from our community is loud and clear - people want to give back - they want to help

In times of crisis, the desire to assist others in need becomes even stronger. People need to find different ways to give and be involved, and as an organization, we need to adjust our strategy to fit the times in order to continue to serve as many children and families as possible.

So what will we be doing differently? You won't see us put on a black-tie gala this year. It just doesn't feel fiscally or socially responsible in the current economy. Instead, watch for more low-cost events that more of our supporters will be able to participate in.

Our motto this year is increasing our human capital.  This means optimizing what we as individuals can do:  more involvement from current members, cultivating new volunteers, increasing the number of people who serve on our board, bringing in new donors, holding more life enrichment events for children, collaborating with partners such as the Rotary Club, and more outreach to city chamber associations. It will take all of us but, together, we can make progress even in the toughest of times.
A Wicked Good Time

On February 4th, Variety hosted 30 donors for a pre-theater reception before going to see the Broadway play WICKED.  We kicked off the evening at the Hotel Witcomb in their Market Street Grill.  Donors enjoyed wine, mussels, oysters, calamari and Cesar salad.  Guests received swag bags of donated items from AAA, Bloomingdales, The Body Shop, Patrick Polo, Dreyers, Long Grover Confectionery, and Alexandar Books who donated books for each guest.

Variety received a donation of 30 tickets which quickly sold out to members and guests who enjoyed the show on February 6th. A good time was had by all! (pictured: John Muir and family)

Playing Ball With BORP
Baby Girl
Variety regularly partners with Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Program (BORP) in Berkeley. BORP provides recreational programs for children with disabilities. We visited on Saturday, February 21st and shot baskets with the kids that we serve. Variety board members found out first hand just how important this program is to wheelchair mobile children.

Last year Variety dedicated a van to BORP that was donated by
Gordon and Judy Harris
