Livescribe in Action at Wichita Collegiate

an award- winning chemistry teacher at Wichita Collegiate School and a professor at Wichita State University.  In the article Digital pen answers challenges for class from The Wichita Eagle, Janice Crowley says, "I own lots of expensive technology. There is nothing that comes close to this pen as far as how it has helped my students improve their achievement."  Janice Crowley and her colleagues demonstrated the role that the Livescribe pen plays in their classrooms and Linda were there to see it all play out.

Linda's Visit Observations:

While I was at Wichita Collegiate School I spoke with three different teachers who were utilizing the smartpen in their courses. 

• Janice Crowley demonstrated how she uses her pen with her AP Chemistry students.  When class started she had them open their laptops, plug in their headsets and listen to a pencast that she had recorded prior to class.  She also demonstrated how she creates pencasts as she is teaching.  She places her notebook under a document camera, turns on her pen and writes her notes.  The students did not take notes but were using their calculators to solve problems as she was asking questions.  I was impressed with how engaged all of her students were!  Janice then uploads all of her pencasts to her Moodle course where her students have access to them for review. 

• The second teacher was a middle school math teacher who asked me if I had ever heard of reverse teaching.  I had to answer "no" to that one.  He went on to explain that he creates pencasts that his students view for homework.  The students then come to class where they complete the "traditional" homework problems together.  He has had great success with this method.  This teacher uses Edmodo to store his pencasts.

• The last teacher taught Spanish.  She creates all of her pencasts during class in front of her students.  She shared that she now has all four years of Spanish saved which her students refer back to often.  She is able to save her pencasts in their gradebook software. 

I also visited with two students.  They all loved the Livescribe pens and unanimously agreed that all of their teachers should be using them!
