Issue: # 9June 2010
Dear Friends,
As many of you know, our area of specialization is helping clients prepare for, transition into, and live in retirement.  We are committed to being at the forefront with knowledge, tools and resources to help to address these risks and increase financial security.

Retirement and lifetime income planning are among the most complicated issues addressed by professional financial planners.   To stay on top of the complexity and change requires commitment to continually learning and willingness to invest.  For example, over the last three months, we have:
  • Attended a two day conference in Chicago focused retirement income.   The event featured continuing education led by a number of renowned thought leaders in key topic areas  of retirement planning.
  • Participated in a full day continuing education event with a focus on Roth IRA conversion opportunities featuring Natalie Choate, a nationally recognized expert in this area.
  • Attended another full day continuing education event sponsored by the Boston Tax institute focused on estate planning and retirement benefits.
  • Completed a self study program on Social Security planning.
  • Invested in specialized software to help better understand decisions surrounding retirement assets.

In this newsletter we would like to share some thoughts and perspective on two of these topic areas: Social Security planning, and Roth IRA conversions.

We hope everyone enjoys a spectacular summer, and would like to express special thanks to all of our clients who have referred others to us.  We consider referrals the ultimate compliment and appreciate the business they bring us.

Best,

Should You Be Converting IRA Assets to Roth IRA?
Whether or not converting IRA assets to Roth IRA assets is a "good deal" for any individual is driven by a number of factors.  For some individuals, the decision is less complicated.  Either the benefits clearly outweigh the costs, or the costs clearly outweigh the benefits.  For others, deciding whether or how much to convert today is more complicated, and requires an understanding of personal priorities, assumptions about what the future may bring, and the willingness to take some risks.
