Meet Your Ceremony Director D. Scott Withers discusses "What's What" for this year's Ceremony
I caught up with this year's Ceremony Director - D. Scott Withers (DSW), and asked him about this year's Anniversary Awards. How do you feel about acting as Director for this 20th Annual ariZoni Ceremony? DSW: I'm
very excited about it and yet, find it a bit daunting because it's an
anniversary year... Mostly, I just want people to have a great time and
celebrate what we do in our community. And, as you know they say, 90%
of being a good director is in casting well. If that's the case, then
I'm already looking good with Ron May and Katie McFadzen at the helm as emcees...they are individually amazing, smart and funny performers and
together...well...it's gonna be a FUN night!
How will you be incorporating the 20 year anniversary of the ariZoni's into this years Ceremony? DSW: For
the most part, the ceremony will be pretty straight forward...I mean
we're all there to hear who is honored and then get to that party at the
end - ha! But there will be a few surprises thrown in to honor the
past and celebrate how far we've come. Do you have anything special planned for the Ceremony that you can share with the readers? DSW: A couple special things...but nothing I wanna share! You'll have to come to the ceremony to find out! (Did I mention that he's a tease??)
How do you feel about the awards Ceremony in general? DSW: I think it's a
great time for all of us in our community to get together and celebrate
what we've accomplished over the past year...and in this case over the
past 20 years! It's great to honor the artistry for the season and it's
also just great to hang out and enjoy our "peeps" in a non-work
environment...something we don't get enough opportunities to do
throughout the year. What will you be wearing? DSW: Ugh...I haven't the slightest idea...hopefully
something stylish yet comfortable cuz I'm sure I'll be running around
like a madman - ha! Thoughts on working with emcees - Ron May and Katie McFadzen, and choreographer Michael Barnard? DSW: Cream
of the crop! Best of the best!!! I love them individually AND
collectively - ha! Actually, Katie and I will be celebrating our 23rd
anniversary of friendship; Michael and I will be popping the cork over
20 years of blissful friendship; and Ron and I have just started out -
only about 8 or 9 years, I think, but also exceedingly blissful!! Besides the ceremony, what projects are you currently working on? DSW: I
just finished Footloose at AZ Broadway Theatre. I'll be directing The
Wiz for Greasepaint (just finished casting) and I'm
rehearsing the role of Frog in A Year With Frog and Toad at
Childsplay. Any other things or thoughts you would like the readers to know. DSW: Just to say, "Come on down" on the 20th of September and enjoy! Kandyce Hughes is putting together a fantastic after-party at the Fiesta Inn Resort with (for the first time in our history) a DJ and dance floor! And there's no excuse like, "I have rehearsal," allowed this year as you can buy an "after party only" ticket and come join us there. The whole night is going to be a blast! Don't miss it!!

Message From the President Kelly Crews
WOW!! The ariZonis are 20 years old! It's Ceremony time, and what a great celebration we have in
store for you this year! The
ariZoni Board has been hard at work to put together wonderful celebrations,
complete with a few surprises, a lot of excitement, and ... well you'll just have
to wait and see! But it's going to
be AMAZING, and we are THRILLED with the level of excitement we've been hearing
from you guys! With the appropriately themed, "If
they could see us now!" Ceremony, we are blessed with a terrific Director in
our own D. Scott Withers, who has some amazing help on the creative team by
Musical Director Jeff Kennedy, Opening number Choreographer Michael Barnard,
and emcees Katie McFadzen and Ron May! Seriously...could it be a more star-filled, fun-filled night?
So come on down to the Tempe
Center for the Arts to celebrate a terrific season, which you should ALL be
proud of, and help us celebrate the ariZoni's 20th Anniversary! You know, Mark Twain is often quoted as
saying: "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by
the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines.
Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." While I wasn't around the ariZonis
20 years ago, I hope that those of you who were are excited to see
where this organization is destined to go. We must not be the victims of "What might have been." I have to believe that while we might
not have always made the right decisions, at least we weren't afraid to
try! I offer my sincere thanks to all
the amazing theaters who have provided us with wonderful entertainment,
beautiful memories and great times over the years. And I thank you for daring to come with us as we Explore. Dream. Discover.
