We've heard a lot of talk lately about high gas prices. And frankly, we Nantucketers would be happy to pay anything under $3.00, as prices on-island have been hovering near $3.50 for the last several weeks. That's about the same as the average on Hawaii but still well below the national high of $4.50 somewhere in California! But it helps to illustrate a good point - Nantucket is a great gas saving destination (and at our rates, not a bad money saving destination either!)
As we mentioned in great detail a few issues back, just find your way to Hyannis and let the ferries or the airlines do the rest. ( missed it? email me and I'll be happy to forward our Getting Here extravaganza!) And once your on-island, we have two of the best suggestions for getting around -- our fast and friendly shuttles to both downtown and Surfside Beach or try a bike!
Nantucket has taken great strides in making the island almost completely accessible by bicycle. The latest and greatest addition was the completion of the Old South Road bike path, which now quite easily links the Nantucket Inn to all the other paths and the entire island. ( more information? go to www.wheelsheelsandpedals.com)
And we aren't talking a little strip of asphalt adjacent to the vehicle lanes. These are beautiful, well-maintained, safe and scenic routes that weave in and out of all sorts of pretty little spots all the way from 'Sconset on the east shore to Madaket on the west.
So bring your own or rent one here. It's great exercise and wonderful way to see the island. And paired with the Nantucket Inn shuttle -- just one more reason to visit Nantucket this season (and maybe even save a little money along the way!)

ps: Since summer is upon us, our thought is to take July off from newsletter writing and come back in late August with all the information you need (and more) to plan your autumn vacation! See you then!

Nantucket Inn Shuttle Services
We make it easy to get around Nantucket without your car or bike! The Nantucket Inn is the only Nantucket hotel to offer free shuttle service to both, the historic downtown and Surfside Beach as well as free transfers between the ferry docks and the airport. All vans are equipped with bike racks.
We operate our service as a true shuttle. If a van is full we may leave a few minutes early but a second vehicle is always dispatched to complete the run and no one is ever left behind. (unless you're late - and honestly who's fault is that?) Town service, to the Visitor Services Center on Federal Street, begins as early as 8AM in the summer season and runs every hour until as late as Midnight. From our drop off point you are within a two block radius of 90% of all dining and shopping as well the Whaling Museum and many other attractions. In the summer season we add more service in the evenings - so as you finish dinner, you are no more than 29 minutes from the next shuttle back home again!
Weather permitting, Surfside Beach service begins at 10:30AM and runs every hour until 5:30 PM. From Surfside it's an easy walk east to Nobadeer or a moderate hike west to Miacomet. Regular town service puts you within easy reach of Children's Beach or the Jetties Beach. (links thanks to our friends at nantucket.net)
Our white vans meet every regularly scheduled Steamship Authority vessel. The vans park in the generally chaotic arrival area parking lot. Drivers can only wait until everyone has departed the ship. (so no dilly-dallying, ok?) Unfortunately, the even more chaotic Hy-line dock is inaccessible by vehicle. So we invite you to connect with the next town shuttle departure at the Visitor Services Center on Federal Street (about 3 blocks) or, on your dime, flag a taxi at the end of the wharf in the Grand Union parking lot. The normal fare is under $10.
A phone call is all it takes for an airport transfer. Give us a call from luggage claim and our van will meet you outside the terminal.

A Secret Summer on Nantucket
Did you know that there are two "secret" summer weeks on Nantucket?
Yep! The week after Independence Day - July 8 to 12 and the week before Labor Day - August 26 - 30 are generally quiet weeks, free of summer crowds. But best of all, these weeks can also offer some amazing rate deals.
Many folks ask us why our rates at the Nantucket Inn are presented as a range. Well, it is simple supply and demand (and if you paid attention in ECON 101 you would know this). When demand is high, supply decreases and prices increase. Conversely, when demand is low and there is lots of supply, prices drop. Our rates fluctuate with demand ensuring that the rate you are quoted is always the best available rate (not something that was set last winter when we had nothing better to do!)
Even though we are well into the summer season by July 8, we offer some pretty great rates and packages for savvy travellers, like you, that are in the know!
And we recognized the weakness at the end of the summer, August 26, a few years back and actually decided to begin our fall rates early, as a reward to those that can travel that week -- and Labor Day!
So give us a call - 800 321-8484 and book your Secret Summer dates now!
