Increasing Your Margin of Tolerance
One of my clients commented on something we hear quite often from clients at BodyWork Associates. What he noticed was this: Prior to coming to BWA, he was in a substantial amount of pain after long hours at his job. After two Precision Neuromuscular Therapy (PNMT) sessions, his pain level after a strenuous day at work is much less.
This person is a surgeon who often does long surgeries that require him to sustain very difficult positions. This is very difficult on the body, not to mention the amount of stress that accompanies such difficult procedures. What is the mechanism behind the decease in his discomfort after PNMT treatment? In this chart, the top line (Failure Tolerance) represents the point where muscles are in pain. The lower line represents the demand placed on the muscles.
Our goal is to increase the capability and endurance of muscles during demand. By treating and eliminating tissue injury, muscular capability increases due to the removal of tissue injuries which reduce muscle function. It is for this reason that we often suggest that you carefully explore physically demanding activity as the real test of our progress. Helping people get out of pain is the first step, but that must be followed up with the resumption of physical activity. We often find that our clients can resume activities and exercises that previously created pain. By carefully increasing activity and challenging your muscles, the increase in strength and endurance will further strengthen and stabilize the area. Our goal is to help you restore full functioning- allowing you to be unencumbered with muscular pain. |
BodyWork Associates and the Arts. . .
We at BWA have a strong alliance with the performing arts in Champaign Urbana. Three events that we help sponsor are coming in the spring of 2012 and you may wish to put them on your calendar:

The Hierarchy of Pain
Another common comment from clients is that when the area of the body that we have been treating improves, another area seems to come to the forefront. This can be quite perplexing and a bit frustrating unless you understand the possible reasons behind this phenomenon. - Attention The experience of pain is very much linked to attention and one can only pay attention to limited stimuli at any one time. Therefore, as one area improves, an area or discomfort previously overshadowed is now in the forefront of our experience. (Stubbing your toe is a marvelous cure for a tension headache!) It is important to realize that the number of problematic areas is not increasing, you are just becoming aware of more of them.
- Changing Job Description Sometimes, the restoration of function of an area being treated changes the dynamics of surrounding muscles, which may complain briefly until they adapt to the new order.
- Awareness Having a therapist carefully and thoroughly explore your muscles drastically heightens your internal awareness. As a result, you notice sensations that were previously overlooked.
Any of these three reasons could explain the temporary awareness of muscular discomfort in areas previously unnoticed. The good news is that this is a temporary phenomenon that leads to very positive long term changes.

Brain Fitness
There are several very exciting initiatives for improving brain function that area happening right here in Champaign-Urbana.
Center for Nutrition, Learning, and Memory at the University of Illinois Through scientific discovery and targeted research, the Center for Nutrition, Learning, and Memory drives the understanding of nutrition's impact on brain cognition. The Center is the first interdisciplinary cognition and nutrition research center in the country. This is an amazing initiative happening right here, led by Dr. Neal Cohen.

BrainProv
Research has shown that novel activity is very protective for the aging brain. One of the best and most fun ways to create novel activity and therefore challenge your brain to think creatively is improv. While it is certainly entertaining to watch professional actors perform improv, it is even more fun to participate in.

The Art of Science 2.0 Last March, BWA sponsored an art showing of scientific images chosen for their esthetic value. The show was in collaboration with the Institute for Genomic Biology on the campus of the University of Illinois. Held at Indigo Gallery in Champaign; it was a fabulous success. Since then, the show has traveled extensively and will continue to do so. If you would like to see a video summary of the first show, click here. Due to the number of requests for a sequel, we have just scheduled the second show for April 12-14, 2012. Make plans to save the date! The opening is Thursday evening April 12 from 6 to 8:30pm. |
